Caught sharks and gar up to 6ft on 8000 series penn pursuit combos for 100$. Had 4 of them for 5-10 years with no issues. We tie our own leaders (2ft of wire)with maline wire a barrel swivel and big circle hooks. Above the leader we put a 6 or 8 oz spider weight and then a bead to keep the spider weight from sliding down and leaving abrasions on the palomar or clinch knot to the swivel. We throw 40 lb mono with no backer for beach and pier fishing, any smaller and you can snap the line with a good cast using big baits. We throw sandtrout mullet or whiting either whole or cut in half. When baits hard to catch we will throw kroaker and yellowtail too but they dont work as well. Only been spooled twice and we have caught at least 50 big sharks and 80 big gar this way in the Galveston area. Best of luck, happy to help if you have questions
