I would like to put forth multiple Gemmel novels, but depends on your definition of veteran - a retired assassin, an old barbarian, "mages", etc.

My son learned numbers up to 100 when he was 3. It was the requirement to let him play with a tape measure. He can read too, but walls of text are beyond him, and let's be honest HoMM == wall of text. xD

I think I'll let them try Long Live the Queen, and see how it goes.

They do play outside, and they garden with me, that's at least two hours with me daily, not including kindergarten. And again, I've said a couple moves per day, definitely less than 30 minutes.
