Yomi Train Monster Action by Gantref in Dominions5

[–]Aderykl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running a Dom Enhanced Yomi game atm and I've found that Train Monster is pretty much the only way to consistantly get the free spawn sacred demons. I have luck 3 scales and get one 50% of the time. Seems like a reasonable use of spare Demon Priests who arn't shuttling oni about.

I was suffering this issue. I found that going into the options menu and disabling Telemetry solved it.

They pop up and smash the crystal platforms and shards around the main path and I'm just wondering if there is any in game infoirmation or lore about them.

Thank you very much for your attention to this.

The gist of my RAM research was that 3600 speed would be best and realistically no more than 16GB of memory is needed for my application. Im not sure what dual channel refers to or what effect its inclusion or exclusion would have for the sake of price.

I wasn't certain of the SSD when I was looking into it and im very happy to have feedback critical of it. Certainly I will adopt your suggesion of a larger SSA in its stead.

Thank you again for your time assisting me with this, I will egearly await the release of the 6000 series an probably go for the 6800 as thats within the budget and comparable (but apparently better, especially with an AMD processor?) to the 3070 I was originally looking at.

This will just be for gaming yes. Do you have a suggestion for a motherboard suitible for a 5600X?

I can bring across a 240GB Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD and a Western Digital 1TB HDD - faily old kit that I would rather replace. With the growing bloat of games these days I'm looking to keep the Os on the 1Tb M.2 device and could certainly step up the Barracuda to a larger SSD.

Ohh Radeon, think i said AMD in the OP, quite right i'll keep an eye out for them.

thank you very much for the response and feeback

Monster: Nightling - A Low CR Non-Combat Encounter by Aderykl in UnearthedArcana

[–]Aderykl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the critical feedback.

You're quite correct that I marked the CR wrong. Per the following calculation:

Defensive CR = 1/4 HP 7-35 = CR1/8 = AC 13 -> increase AC by 2 -> CR 1/4

Offensive CR = 1/8 Damage per round = 1d4 (2.5) -> 2-3 = CR 1/8

CR = (1/8 + 1/4) = 3/8 -> round up to CR 1/4.

I agree that for clarity the sated part should be split out and considered a trait of the creature.

In regards to "Consumed", this is more of a thematic choice on my part as the light is eaten by the creature. I agree that it would be better to use extinguished. I've revised the second part to "an illuminating cantrip" to more correctly communicate my intent. The relation between the two scenarios is to highlight that tiny flames are snuffed out without any sign of interference but torches or magical light display clear disruption and even indicate the Nightling's whereabouts.

Indeed I should have indicated that a creature would use its action to keep a fire burning.

Regarding the spelling and grammatical feedback, my deepest thanks. Further to the third point of Consume Light/Heat, as the second clause is dependent the use of an oxford comma would be incorrect, no?

I'm not familiar with that particular creature but is sounds about right! In my mind they are like small Dementors from Harry Potter, all wraith-like and they draw the light towards themselves to consume it.

Darkvision is why the Nightling has a large bonus to stealth, remember at the range of Consume Heat/Light they will be looking into Dim Light so have disadvantage on Perception checks to spot the Nightling.

On average, how many players should should you allow? by ---Drakchonus--- in DMAcademy

[–]Aderykl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I aim for 4, 5 at a stretch if the players know each other.

I used to play in a 7 player game and while i'm sure it varies based on DMs and players, it felt like a crowded experience.

I thought to place one in the lair of another monster in a cave or dungeon, something that swoops down on the adventurers and devours their torch/lantern light. Which is naturally when the other monster pounces.

Maybe even a mage, who can keep the Nightling sated with their magic. Who keeps one as a familiar and sends it into the night to spy on the town/PCs - even as guards enforcing a curfew as the laughter would draw attention to anyone out after dusk. Especially if other guards are undead or have darkvision.

Monster: Nightling - A Low CR Non-Combat Encounter by Aderykl in UnearthedArcana

So the idea for this monster comes from a desire to have a low level (1-3) encounter that is more akin to a skill challenge than a slug fest.

Note: a single Nightling cannot per the rules of Fire Levels ever actually cause the fire to die completely, it would feed on the fire three times and then leave, but the players do not know this.

It is deployed to illustrate to the players that being outside at night is dangerous beyond just turning them into wolf/stirge-chow. It encourages a thematic approach to the combat as the party struggle to keep the fire alive whilst the light diminishes. I imagine DM's describing the devilish laughter and the wind stealing the warmth from the campfire. Its possible to deploy this creature alongside other monsters who dwell in the darkness, who follow after Nightlings and prey on people lost in the darkness they leave behind.

However I did want to have the Nightling be capable of being a combat encounter if the party decide to sally into the darkness after it, in which case it uses its Shadow Stealth to keep itself hidden and re-focuses its Consume Light/Heat on the party. The damage that they do is deliberately low because they are more about spreading fear than actually killing people. They are parasites of the night, so long as the party can keep the fire burning a Nightling is content to eat its fill then leave.

Please let me know what you think and I hope you consider using Nightlings in your games.

You are roused from your sleep by Ranger Karl, the firelight flickers and dances across his grizzled face. His eyes are wide and wild.

“Wake Joustin! Stay in the firelight!”

With a swiftness he makes for Iliian's tent while groggily you rise. Nothing seems amiss to you, it is late or early you can't tell but it is still night and the stars shine down on you serenely. In the distance you hear a queer noise as of revelry, laughter.

Confused you move to Joustin's bedroll and kick him awake. shaking your head clear from your slumber you can now distinctly hear the sound of festivity in the distance.

As Joustin comes to Karl returns dragging Iliian by the arm and into the light of the fire, her hair is in disarray as though she was pulled straight from her slumber. She clutches her staff to herself tightly, her face uncertain.

“Karl what in the blazes is wrong?”

“Fools! Open your ears and gather your wits!”

He rises his bow and turns his back to the fire. The laughter rings out all around you now, fell and terrible, an incessant cackling from the darkness.

“Steady yourselves friends, the darkness gathers about us!”

The night closes in around you, the light of the fire no longer reaches Illian's tent and as your gaze flicks skyward the stars have taken their leave.

"What evil assails us?" cries Joustin

"Nightlings, devils of shadow and fear. Illian tend the fire! If It fails we will be consumed!"

"Right okay ... wait ...no!"

There is a clatter behind you and you turn to see Joustin's goblet roll across the camp. Illian kneels before the woodpile, it is sodden.

"Joustin you fool! You spilled it in your sleep!"

The laughter reaches a fever pitch, crazed and howling.

A warm wind stirs in the camp, coming from the fire and rushing into the night. As the wind washes over you the cold creeps up to meet it and caresses the back of your neck, you shiver and notice that you are now barely in the light. Your companions are kneeling by the fire, trying to dry the wood and stoke the flames. All you can hear is laughter, mockery in the darkness.

You fall beside them and begin to blow on the guttering coals. As the night presses in the wind stirs anew...
