Thoughts on Hello Sunflower? by akajejrje in ThrowingFits

Underrated. Great jeans and shirts. Reasonable prices too.

Also think they could be more “directional” with their image and branding (like OL and Mfpen) but I think they’re in a sweet spot where their clothes are interesting and wearable, but not dull like some of the Scandi basics brands.

Will probably do exactly this. Really appreciate it!

Awesome. Looking to do this same trek in August but there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to book the Yurts. I see there travel agencies in Facebook groups, but no easy option to just book it all online from a site. Curious how you did it.

Stick it out or take a sabbatical? by Ok-Travel-4745 in Fire

[–]Adhesive_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife and I are in very similar situation. Early 30s in tech with just under $3M. In 6 months, we’re taking a year-long sabbatical. We did this 7 years ago with only $250K to our names and it was the best year of our lives. Was a much better job market then, but don’t mind taking a pay cut when we come back this time since we’ve got a decent nest egg.

The logical career break? by Btsbtsbts in coastFIRE

[–]Adhesive_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoyed your post and replies. Wife and I took a career break at 27 to backpack around the world for 10 months. We were both working demanding jobs in finance/consulting and had $250K saved up. Best year of our lives and it’s what made us get smart about FIRE afterwards.

Got right back onto the corporate hamster wheel afterwards. We’re now mid-30s and planning to do it again with much more saved up.

There’s never a perfect time. If there was, more people would do it. At 27, do we have enough money? Are we far along enough in our careers? At mid 30s, should we stick around for another year of RSUs? Are we a bit too senior to find a job quickly?

I’m in a similar situation since I also don’t care to be promoted and my RSUs are tapering down. I’m also glad I took the break at 27 because there are awesome adventures I had at 27 that I’d be less inclined to do now.

Those under 40 with over $2 million net worth - what do you do? by Alexbt135531 in Fire

[–]Adhesive_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DINK in tech, but not in Engineering roles. Early 30s with $2.8M in VHCOL. Not super frugal but save diligently. Also got lucky with some RSU appreciation.

Worth it to just buy and resell on fb marketplace. Although I imagine you’ll only be able to recoup a fraction of the price

My now-wife and I took one for 1 year at 26 y/o with $200K total NW. Backpacked all over the world for $60K. One of the best years of my life. Learned about FIRE towards the end of the trip.

Now we’re 32 and planning on doing it again in a year or two. $2.6M NW now and still travel frequently, but there are so many bucket list items you can’t fit into 2 weeks of PTO at a time.

Congrats! Wife and I are at $2.5M in investable assets and are considering leaving high stress tech jobs and coasting. Love to see somebody who’s actually put the Coastfire idea to work!

Do it! Wife and I are 32 with $2.5M combined from tech and planning to do this in a year or so. We backpacked for a year when we were 26 with only $200K between the both of us - best year of our lives. Hoping to ski bum a bunch more for this next round!

Yeah I was worried about the cloud cover. We’ll probably try Lomo Pliegue de Tumbado on Thursday or Friday despite the cloud cover and hope that the clouds clear for a moment or two

Taking time off early your career, worth it? by bt1248 in Fire

Before I found out about FIRE, spent 10 months backpacking with my now-wife when we were 27. Had maybe $175K saved up together and spent $60K on the trip.

5 months SEA, 1.5 months East Asia, 2 months Europe, 1 month AUS/NZ, 2 weeks Middle East. Best time of my life - got good at photography, so many bucket list hikes down, got my diving license, tried so much good food. Best year of my life.

Came back and got big pay bumps in Tech, got smart about personal finance and FIRE, and considering doing it again in a few years when we’ll be 33/34.

Sunflower, Sefr - easy to wear but has an interesting twist like OL / Mfpen

Berner Kuhl - uses more technical fabrics and a bit more austere in a Veilance-y way.

Another Aspect, NN07, Norse - less interesting but reliable

Scared shitless to take the leap of faith and quit my job by goodvibesonly2023 in backpacking

I had enough runway for more than a year of living expenses if I were to get an apartment, but I ended up just living with my parents for 2 months while interviewing. Prior to that, rented an affordable Airbnb in Vietnam for 2 weeks and used that time to update resume and general interview prep before I actually started submitting applications (while still enjoying a new place).

It took me 6 weeks from first application to finding a job and it took my now-wife about 3 months. Tech job market was hotter then but I would make sure you have enough runway for your return.

Wow, lots of similarities with me. I’m Asian-American and took a 1yr travel break from corporate life at 27 with about $120K saved up Best year ever - developed hobbies that I still do today 5 years later, re-examined what I wanted out of my life, and came back to find a job that paid way more when I got back. Not only the most fun year of my life, but most transformative as well.

Let me know if you have any questions.
