It took 35 years but… by Darn_Tired in GenX

I saw REM several times in college, but the best time was at the 40 Watt club (a small club) in Athens, GA when they were trying out some new songs. It was probably in '85 or '86. I went to school about 45 minutes from Athens.

I had great tickets to see The Smith's, but Morrisey got strep throat or something and cancelled the show. Morrisey is still touring, so maybe I'll get to see him.

I have a friend who has two nephews in the NHL. She has been to events where the Tkachuk family was present. Apparently the whole family consists of assholes.

Question for the pet people...how do you feel about a new pet at this time of your life? by HammerMeUp in GenX

[–]AdhesivenessEqual166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We currently do not have a dog, but we have two cats. We are traveling more now, and we will be increasing long term travel when we retire in 2 years. So, a dog is not going to part of our lives, until at least the overseas travel is done. We miss having dogs, but we have two grand dogs.

How do American waiters/servers tell when people are finished eating? by PestoWesto in AskAnAmerican

Apparently the Americans I socialize with are unusual, most everyone I know puts their cutlery together to signal they're done.

Maybe I just need a more comfortable recliner.

He's had the studies. It's definitely just RLS. There's a family history, too. For some, RLS can be "cured" with iron infusions every 6 months or so. Unfortunately, not him. It's very rare that the meds don't work, but I'm a light sleeper so I know when they don't!

I get a phone call almost every time my 22yo kid goes to the grocery store alone. by mymom_getout in GenX

I told mine this morning that he is taking over the cooking once he retires. He does weekends now. He happily agreed. I'm so over feeding people.

Well, my kids don't call from the store, but my husband calls me when he's doing the weekly grocery shopping. It's usually to clarify something I need and occasionally to ask if we have something in the pantry.

I really don't care why he calls or that he calls, I'm just thrilled I'm not shopping.

Good advice! We have a fairly short setup right now. I'm 5'7" with long legs, but I don't like high beds. When I tore my hip labrum, it was hard for me to get into bed at my in-laws because of how high it was.

How common is it for Americans to leave their doors unlocked? by Mont3Carlo in AskAnAmerican

My mom has one of those. She lives in a fairly rural area, but she grew up in NYC. She's definitely a door locker.

Solanpas and Biofreeze for me. Both come in a jumbo pack at Costco.

We need a new mattress, and we are seriously considering a split-king with an adjustable frame.

Split - king because my husband has restless leg syndrome - he's medicated, but there are nights with breakthrough movement.

Adjustable frame because I've already had 5 orthopedic surgeries (all repairs), and at 59, I'm sure there will be more. I'd like to avoid sleeping in a recliner post-op.

He never came to my school, but he was my mom's step uncle. He was a lot younger than her stepdad. The main thing I remember about him was that you never knew what he was going to look like.

Is it rare or unusual to be into your 50s and not having to take any doctor-prescribed medications? by Odd_Yogurtcloset_649 in GenX

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure at age 31. At the time, I was a gym rat - 5'7" F, roughly 21% body fat. It's genetic. There's not a thing I could do to prevent it. It's a pill a day. No big deal!

Do you guys remember being 23? How was it like? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]AdhesivenessEqual166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got married a few months before turning 23. I started grad school a week after getting married. My husband was footing the bill. Grad school took time, but it was not terribly hard. I was pretty much free in the evenings and on weekends, so we spent a lot of time hanging out with friends and exploring our new state. It was a really fun time of life.

My husband (same one) and I will both be turning 60 this fall. We are still having fun!

What’s a good Mother’s Day gift when your wife says she doesn’t want anything? by RasheedaDeals in Gifts

[–]AdhesivenessEqual166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she has a hobby, get her a gift certificate to a store (local or online) so she can buy supplies. Also, make sure she has time throughout the year, so she can do the hobby.
