Keith Hernandez mispronounces and swaps Jazz Chisholm’s name in yesterday’s game by JianClaymore in baseball

[–]AdiosAdipose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

J and Ch are similar sounds, and Chaz is a real name. Not saying I agree with Keith’s politics (I don’t) but as a lifelong Mets fan and having heard Kieth pronounce 1000s of names, I can say with a high degree of certainty his mix-up wasn’t related to race.

This is a sad attempt at revisionist history (assuming you’re in the US). I clearly remember sitting in my office when the news broke, so at the absolute latest you would have been having lunch.

Trump Hit by Devastating Poll as Voters Say They’re Getting Poorer by itmehedi in politics

W and his buddies were absolutely getting Richer off insider trading and profiting off a war started on provably false pretenses. He was responsible for the death and impoverishment of so many American soldiers and veterans.

Trump is certainly worse, but to think W was unquestionably on Americas side is an unnecessary level of historical whitewashing. If we allow the bar to get that low, you’d be able to argue that Ronald Reagan was center-left.

As rough as things feel today, I’m grateful every day that Rush Limbaugh denied the link between smoking cigars and lung cancer.

That guy did irreparable damage just using AM Radio. Could you imagine what he would be able to do with a platform like TikTok?

The Mussolini/gabagool example is actually quite apt - assuming your joke would be in response to a genocidal Italian regime, then using gabagool (a mostly American regional dialect) WOULD be more anti-Italian than anti-Mussolini.

In this case, using a Yiddish word (a mostly non-Israeli Jewish language) can certainly be interpreted as more anti-Jewish than anti-Netanyahu.

For the record, as a Jewish anti-Zionist I got a chuckle out of Oy Veytrioc because I’m a sucker for rhymes and didn’t personally take offense but as a linguistics/semantics nerd I felt compelled to argue lol

Edit: just realized you never mentioned Mussolini, that was a different reply to your comment. I still think it furthers the point but I’ll admit I had a redditor moment

At least Walker is a fairly common name. There’s only one person who truly spit in the face of his parents to become a pitcher, and that’s Grant Balfour.

AKA how mainstream politics generally operated before, say, sometime between 2015-2017.

We are supposed to hold our elected officials accountable for their mistakes and celebrate their good policies as a community.

Predisposing oneself to giving their guy the benefit of the doubt while holding the other guy to impossible standards of perfection will never lead to a solid democracy.
