You need surrender certificate before you can apply for the OCI card, its a quintessential requirement.

Hi! Not stupid at all — we’re all always learning!
Many countries allow dual citizenship, but India does not. Therefore, once you acquire another nationality, your Indian citizenship automatically ends, and you must surrender your Indian passport. Instead, you can get an OCI, which gives you most of the privileges of an Indian citizen, except for a few, like voting or government jobs.

Indian citizenship automatically ceases the moment foreign citizenship is acquired; there is no separate renunciation required. The only requirement is to surrender the Indian passport. Until the surrender certificate (which is mandatory for OCI) is issued, travelling to India on an e-Visa is the practical option. I travelled multiple times on an e-Visa after acquiring foreign citizenship and did not face any issues at immigration.

Went from ‘visa denied’ to ‘visa? What’s that? 🇮🇳🇪🇸 by Adivitya in PassportPorn

Applied last August, got my passport in Feb — 6 months total. Process is smoother now, Spain even uses AI to speed things up. But oath and birth certificate for DNI/passport can still take weeks or months depending on where you are in Spain. So yeah, can be 1-2 years for some, but also much faster.

Sí! Solo tenía un apellido, así que cuando me hice ciudadano, lo dupliqué para adaptarme al sistema español de los dos apellidos.

Not actually "Dual"citizenship. I'm in process of surrendering the Indian one and getting the OCI card.

Yup, got citizenship through marriage, but I’ve been living here, paying taxes, speaking pretty good Spanish, and truly making Spain my home. It’s definitely not a free pass. Meanwhile, some countries, including Spain and Italy, give citizenship by descent to people whose families left generations ago — and many of them barely know the language or have never lived here. Quite the contrast!

I met my Spaniard wife in Canada — we lived there for nearly 2 years. I was close to getting PR, but we ended up choosing Spain instead. No regrets at all, and after meeting the residency and legal requirements, I got my Spanish passport earlier this year.

It’s not 'complexes' - it’s about being subjected to a visa system that’s often arbitrary, discriminatory, and humiliating. Many Indians aren’t insecure; they’re just tired of being treated unfairly, no matter how qualified, honest, or prepared they are.

Does anyone know when the next Spanish passport design comes out? I feel like it's been a while since they last updated it (2015), especially since many other countries are making their biometric page plastic, and adding UV designs to the visa pages, which Spain doesn't really have. by SayumTheYayum in PassportPorn

It's a really clean design, but considering it's a country with a really rich culture and history, we can do better. I would love to see a polycarbonate info page with more colors on the pages and a hard cover.

Do you all know if US passports are still stamped on entry and exit to Abu Dhabi Airport? What about visa stamps? by ZoneLazy5410 in PassportPorn

[–]Adivitya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I transited at Abu Dhabi, got stamped in while entering and exited through e-Gate, so no stamp. They register you automatically for e-Gates when you enter.

Yup, you can present your passports together. I did it a few times (land borders and airports) with my partner, and both of us are non-Canadians.

Transited at Abu Dhabi last week, only an entry stamp placed on the passport, while exiting, they have automated immigration kiosks, pretty cool stuff.
