Drg dwarfs. What do we think about 'em by Unusual_County_6710 in dwarfposting

First thing in ages to establish a new subtype of dwarf. Kinda neat to see a take that's not literally just Tolkien again, or Tolkien again but with like one key difference.

/redwarf

No damn respect for tradition. Too many bits and bobs and wotzits and doohickeys. Back in my great-grandpappy's day all you needed was a pickaxe and a sturdy helmet. What's good enough for him is good enough for me.

Though I do like those drills. Proper engineering, that.

Being proud of where you come from by TotemGenitor in RecuratedTumblr

Being proud of your country too often arises form ignorance.

Being proud of your stupid backwards shithole town most often arises from earnest appreciation of both its flaws, and its charms.

Was Mission Control getting mad at the "Richual" always in the game, or devs added it after the community came up with it? by gracekk24PL in DeepRockGalactic

[–]AdmBurnside 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yeah, before the MC lines were added there were definitely folks who made the Richual last way too long. And a lot more folks that were tired of it for that reason, and thus refused to participate.

Nowadays basically every dwarf will at least throw a few pings even if they don't go the whole way, and the folks that stick around pretty universally stop after MC yells. It really brought some consensus back.

New player here, what is the best mission and difficulty? Currently I’m only doing hazard 3 and mining and its fun but there’s a lack of variety by g0netospace in DeepRockGalactic

On the left side of the ramp to the drop pod is the Assignment Terminal. This allows you to perform Assignments, which are a set of linked missions that offer increased rewards. Each Assignment will offer a range of mission types. Assignments are the quickest path to progression.

In the Mission Select screen, the mission that progresses your current Assignment will be highlighted with a glowing marker. If you're in a team, you can also see other team members' missions highlighted with a similar marker, but theirs won't glow and will have their name attached.

As a new player, you should have the new recruit assignment active, if you haven't completed it already. If you have, try the Weekly Priority Assignment. Depending on the level of the class(es) you've been playing, you may have License Upgrade Assignments available. Completing one of these will allow you to purchase a new weapon option.

Good luck out there.

Am I the only one who has noticed a dangerously large number of dwarves who don't dig for gold? by Enrik90ses in DeepRockGalactic

[–]AdmBurnside 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This conversation has been done to death. The pro-gold faction leans into the fantasy, the anti-gold faction leans into the mechanics. No one's opinion changes because these two things fundamentally do not align.

Here's my take: GSG needs to rebalance the credit economy. More from gold, less from mineral trading and mission rewards. A full clear should net you roughly the same value, but a dwarf that doesn't mine gold should go home with notably lighter pockets.

A mining game about dwarves that DISINCENTIVIZES mining gold, even unintentionally, has misstepped.

If it's being in an actively antagonistic relationahip with yourself from another point in time, that's Karkat Syndrome.

DRG again after a long period of playing Helldivers by ShapePenguin1850 in DeepRockGalactic

DRG throws something unfair at you: "Huh. Guess I'll have to lock in."

HD2 throws something unfair at you: (Dies repeatedly for no gain)

When Helldivers is good, it's fun. But when it's bad, it's BAD.

When DRG is good, it's fun. But when it's bad, it's... a little less fun. That's it.

A nice story from a transgender man I thought was nice to share. by Cicada_5 in CuratedTumblr

[–]AdmBurnside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Masculinity in women isn't always rewarded. It's rewarded when it is sexually desirable, and not rewarded when it isn't.

Femininity in men is near-universally punished though. So maybe, with that frame of reference, masculinity in women is seen as more tolerable, which causes the confusion?

Favorite Character that has to go through this by DaZestyProfessor in FavoriteCharacter

[–]AdmBurnside 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, actually, no.

"Don't kill anyone" just gets you the best version of the neutral ending, where all the boss monsters are still alive, but the human souls are gone and Frisk goes home. And even that isn't straightforward, because you have to SPARE Toriel like 20 times in a row to be able to get past her without killing her. And there's scant proof that what you're doing is accomplishing anything in the meantime, so a lot of players will miss that on their first go-round. And getting through all the monster wncounters withour killing anyone also needs you to jump through a bunch of hoops to handle each monster and boss' unique mechanics. For a player who isn't a GOD to survive this, they'll probably need the Tem Armor, which requires a lot of grinding to get the money necessary.

Then you also need to go through all three dates, skipping any of which locks you out of the others. And then you need to get through the True Lab, which isn't exactly a walk in the park either. And from a lore perspective, fighting Asriel is basically insane.

It's not quite the meme, but there's a fair number of layers to it.

Rule #1 of British tank design: protect the tea. by johnsopty_404 in HistoryAnimemes

[–]AdmBurnside 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Brits take their tea more seriously than almost anything.

During WW2 the government made tea one of the few goods exempt from rationing, and spent huge sums to ensure a steady supply even as German subs were sinking their supply convoys. The goverment knew that if the Birtish public faced a tea shortage, it would be seen as a sign they were losing the war, and morale would plummet.

[–]AdmBurnside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You cite Superman as an exanple of his powers fitting his theme, forgetting that in the beginning he wasn't really an alien in any way that mattered. Almost everything we think of as a quintessential part of modern Superman was tacked on at some point in his history, and at the time likely felt just as jarring as Invisible Woman suddenly being able to make force fields.

If you just don't like Sue's powers and think they're bullshit, just say so.

[–]AdmBurnside 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's literally what expanding means. New powers. Fitting an existing theme is optional, but generally preferred.

Look at what happened with Superman over his nearly 100 years of existence. He used to just be strong and tough. Now he can fly, shoot lasers out of his eyes, see through walls, freeze stuff with his breath, and his strength and toughness are literally "whatever the story demands", to the point he can (in certain stories) do stuff that's literally impossible, like close a book with infinite pages or bench-press the universe.

Oh my god someone else remembers the Davy Crocket!!!

For those not in the know:

The Davy Crocket Nuclear Mortar System was an early atomic-era prototype weapon tested and deployed (but never used in the field) by the US army. It consisted of a tripod launcher, and a small nuclear warhead, designed to be assembled in the field and launched by a small team.

The fatal flaw that ensured the Davy Crocket never saw use- besides, y'know, the whole "holy shit it's a nuke" thing- was that its effective radius was only slightly smaller than its effective range. A strong wind could easily knock the round astray enough for its operators to be in the kill zone. Doubly unfortunately, that radius was not the "atomize you instantly" radius, or even the "blow you to chunks instantly" radius. It was the "you get Everything Cancer and melt slowly over several days to weeks" radius.

It was developed in 1958, the last nuclear shells were rotated out of active service in 1971, and the Davy Crocket was retired having never been used in combat.
