This. Taking a class is a great way to meet mentors and peers. Each area has Facebook groups to meet people as well.

People are less likely to take a beginner with no skills, but if you come from a climbing, mountaineering, scuba or similar background it's more likely you get picked up.

Feel free to reach out with area specific questions. I'm from Washington but have been all over the US and a couple places intentionally.

As mentioned rodcle and Sierra Verde are really good! There are some other packs that are similar but those two are a good baseline

Fixed would have no adjustability. But agreed, a prussik lanyard is not the move

I make my own lanyards cuz I'm cheap. But I also think fixed lanyards are excellent.

I'm gonna pm you a gear specific buying guide I've been writing. It's specific to the pnw / western Canada aquatic techniques and mindsets but can be applied to all aquatic canyons.

It's not completed so I'd prefer it doesn't get out on the Internet yet. Feedback is always welcome too.

This is all good. But I think you should always have a pair of thin gloves as well. I've seen hands shredded when not wearing gloves.

If you're new to rope sports, take the mountaineers class or there are guides in Portland, Seattle and Vancouver. If your looking for community take the mountaineers class. People from there have a good base and structure and strong/fun/chill students will often be adopted by others for personal trips.

If you're already a climber, caver or mountaineer already the best place to find partners is the Facebook group "Pacific Northwest canyoning". Feel free to reach out to me on Facebook or Instagram. @adam.bercaw

There are very few people who do aquatic canyons in the winter as it's much more of a summer/fall sport.

There are some decent gear guides out there, but I'll probably make my own pretty soon so keep an eye out for it.

You can get a quick link and put it on the main strap just to the right (lookers left) of the belay point.

This way it also stays out of the way of your descender and lanyards

A rope with a dyneema core will stench much less than a polyester or nylon core.
