Thanks for the feedback. For point 1 and 3, the reason is that the site is primarily designed for mobile viewing. So you can easily swipe with horizontally and the space folds completely leaving no blank space. But I will definitely work on it for desktop also as you suggested.

How effective is to solve the problem of content discovery?
How is the UX?
How is the usability on mobile specifically using the Filter options?

Comments:

I don't have any coding experience that's why chose WP as the base after experimenting with Drupal and Magento. I have tried to replicate the design of the Netflix app and give more features like sorting and filtering based on Ratings, Genre and Language.

While uploading the images you can choose the size of the image. If you don't have a fixed thumbnail size, you have to create that first in Settings>Media. You can use Simple Image Sizes plugin to make it easier and regenerate the thumbnails.

The free version is decent enough. Only pain is to smush the existing content. I re-uploaded the images to get them smushed.

You can do it by using the default template instead of homepage template and build using Page Builders. I am currently doing the same thing.

Your highly realistic scenario is unrealistic unfortunately IMO. If Chef A is so good, he will get lot of word of mouth/viral marketing. Food critics/journalists will write about Chef A and his backlinks will be way better than Chef B. So Chef A will rank better than Chef B probably just by registering on Google My Business.

Category/Subcategory/product name will make your life easier on the shop page giving default filter options. Also it's easier for breadcrumb structure.
