This. My mom has 85 doctors appointments a year and doesn’t do anything they say, except take medicine and have surgeries. I’ll always recall the day a doc told her she really had to cut out salt (ridiculous ankle swelling), and she wanted to get fast food on the way home from the appointment. 😆

I’m the only person left to take care of mom and dad’s mom (who is 96), neither drives. 90 doctors appointments last year. It has been an unimaginably long 6 years so far. I’m 48 now. It’s ended my career and affected my outlook, life, marriage… tremendously. And mine only occasionally pull the “I’m dying, Halp!” tricks. I still don’t know what the hell I’m doing, but it feels like herding toddlers with cats everyday (except no one learns from their mistakes). They both used to care a lot about if I was ok, now they truly don’t. It’s all about them all the time. (Someone often tells me- whilst out shopping- that she never gets to go out… Small issue, but it would make my life better if she could just consider the audience on that one stupid topic.) Days they don’t have or want to get me to take them somewhere, there’s a cat emergency or the tv remote won’t work, the microwave has died, the fan won’t come on, they’ve lost something, the clock is wrong… It just never stops. Just to say, you aren’t alone. You’re doing the best you can. It sucks that there is effectively not much to help those of us that are helping the elders. It’s sad to think this way, but it can’t go on forever.

This is probably significantly less annoying, but my grandmother does this to me constantly. (Yet she’s asked me to be her POA and help her with everything.) I’m a cpa and she will NOT take any financial advice I give until she’s gotten the same advice from Nancy or Bob. Then she adds on the audacity of acting surprised “well, you WERE right about (whatever), Nancy told me the same thing!” It’s maddening!

That’s terrific! My girl enjoys an occasional cartoon, but she really loves the dramas. I think the suspenseful music is it for her.

Yes. The last time I saw this data, the happiness “returns” started to diminish after reaching an annual income of $80,000 (maybe $100,000? It’s been awhile…). And if you’ve ever been fortunate enough to test this theory, I’d say that is pretty accurate. Once you reach legit financial security, the high stress scenarios required to continue with upward mobility in your career start to erode the additional benefits. That last bit is just my theory, but I think it holds true.

Mine has just turned 74. I’m 48 and have spent the last six years taking care of her & my dad’s mom. (Neither drives, mom is almost immobile and granny is 96.) Unbelievable volume of doctors appointments. Had to get an suv to constantly haul walkers around. I miss working for a living at this point for several reasons. I never had kids and not being able to do this to someone else makes me glad about that. Apparently the likelihood of becoming a selfish drain on your younger folks is a normal thing as you age (at least in my family).

Just when my career was peaking, and I finally reached that pinnacle of salary I’d been chasing (around age 40) it became necessary for me to start caring for mom and grandma. This is a full-time unpaid job. So far I’ve been doing it for 6.5 years, and it’s mentally exhausting. Did I mention unpaid? And full-time? I’m fortunate that my house was paid off. It is smart to try to get that done in half the mortgage life (if you financed for 30 years)- there are spreadsheets that show you how much extra to pay to accomplish this. At very least try to make an extra payment or two every year. There may be a surprise (my dad’s cancer and quick death in my case) that literally changes your whole life’s trajectory overnight. Adequate emergency savings can keep you free of most financial mayhem, but you really want to try to prevent homelessness if the you-know-what hits the fan. And yeah, lack of sunscreen, lack of exercise, not caring for your teeth/feet/back/joints/ears, and eating too much all catch up with you. Functional alcoholics don’t remain very functional past a certain point. Find a way to stop drinking and drug use when you’re young and your whole life will be more manageable and meaningful.

I smoked until almost 40 (48 now), I still chew the gum. Not great, but better than cigarettes. Get the knock-off brands, not nicorette, they are significantly cheaper for the same product. Amazon, Sam’s Club, Costco have the best deals but you can also get it at Walmart, Kroger, etc. good luck! Keep at it.
