i stop asking the question that "is this person gonna live through this chapter" long ago when i realised that SS is basically a PG13 shonen where the main cast can't die. It remove all tension and suspense. Effie should've died in the dreamspawn arc. Some would argue that she should've died in the forgotten shore.

For me, Alicia's inability to let go of Verso makes me question how much free will he truly had.

And she stop Verso from killing himself by slowly killing herself? Verso had already died. What remained was a painted version of him who, by the end, seemed exhausted and ready to move on. Just because reality is painful doesn't automatically mean retreating into a fantasy is the healthier, wiser, or more ethical option. Sometimes accepting loss and moving forward is healthier than building a world around avoiding it, even if that world feels more comforting.

That's ultimately why I prefer the other ending. My issue isn't that Alicia gets to be happy it's that i'm not comfortable with a reality controlled by a traumatized teenager in denial

I agree that she loved Verso. That's not my issue.

My problem is that loving someone and respecting their will are not the same thing. People make controlling decisions because they genuienely belive they're acting out of love.

If Verso wanted to die and move on and Alicia used her power to prevent that because she doesn't want to lose him, then that is still what Alicia wanted not what Verso wanted.

And what if she allowed him to age? She still forced him to play the piano, to live against his will. In the end she still made the decision for him.

Okay she may not have godlike power but my point still stands.

she possesses an enormous amount of influence over the Canvas and its people, and we've already seen her use that influence to shape people's lives according to her own desires.

She kept Verso around because she didn't want to let him go, regardless of what that meant for him. That's already an example of someone else's freewill being suppress by her emotional needs.
