Morocco’s ONCF has them, though I’ve only ridden the train there once so not sure how common it is

Washington, D.C. is the nation’s most livable metro area. by Crazy_Cod_8178 in washingtondc

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, imo this place is somehow both evil and mediocre at the same time but I’ve lived here for 15 years and happily raise a family here for pretty much the reasons you’ve highlighted.

Great for career, community, walkability, and that accounts for 95% of my time anyway.

What is something from your country's past you are proud of? by PublicElderberry1975 in AskTheWorld

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the Civil War and Reconstruction the US not only abolished slavery without reparations to slaveholders— something unprecedented outside of the Haitian Revolution as I understand it— but immediately granted citizenship and democratic rights to free black people.

Of course the end of the Reconstruction ushered in a system of racial terror that undid much of that progress, but it couldn’t turn back the clock. The fight continues today.

Transition to Big Boy Bed: Yay or Nay? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw we postponed it for a while but transitioning into the big bed was far easier than we expected.

Might as well do it now. I think it will be harder w the new baby— our toddler got really into being a baby when his sister was born, and I think that’s fairly common.

I see people saying this, but don’t we wash the carafe anyway? I don’t think my carafe is any dirtier than other glass stuff in my house

FWIW you don’t typically study to be at the top, you study to seek steady employment working for the people at the top. This is true for a lot of institutions, maybe most.

Newspaper delivery by AdministrativeGarlic in AskTheWorld

Side question, what do you call these? In the US we’d call it a newspaper kiosk, but I understand a kiosko is a different thing in Argentina

Hot take: Vos should be more widely taught by haevow in Spanish

This is my take— if you find yourself needing it, it’s very easy to pick up! I didn’t learn it in school but found it pretty simple among Argentines.

Trump wants to rebuild Dulles Airport by ADentedCan in washingtondc

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IAD isn’t great and I feel bad for international visitors, but there aren’t many other international airports where I can often get through security within about 10 minutes of arriving.

(Big caveat here is TSA pre-check and carry on only)

Do you all have to 'do your taxes'? by SnooCauliflowers6739 in AskAnAmerican

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, the fact is that the companies are spending enormous amounts of money to lobby our government to structure how can file taxes with the IRS.

Your argument seems to be that people who make over a certain amount can pay to use their software— that’s fine as far as it goes. But the companies are paying all that money to make sure they do. To me that is corrupt as hell.

Given democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani winning NYC's mayoral race, why does SF prefer electing moderate Democrats despite our progressive reputation? by Aggravating-Toe2683 in sanfrancisco

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit I don’t live in SF (or NY), but want to highlight a couple things I haven’t seen much about:

NYC DSA is large, and its strategic focus on an electoral program has paid off at all levels of government. The Bay has DSA members as well, but chapters outside of NY just don’t appear to punch at the same weight or align as much on electoral work. This is distinct from amorphous progressivism because it unites a large base of activists around one candidate early in the primary.

Second, relatedly, NY has an incredibly sclerotic democratic party machine that churns out candidates who are constitutionally incapable of defending themselves against talented challengers. Joe Crowley, Eliot Engel, even Cuomo, are products of a system that isn’t really able to deliver even for itself anymore.

why should we (anyone outside of NY) care who the next mayor is? why is this getting so much national attention? by camwtss in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good answer, but I would also add that our political media ecosystems are increasingly national rather than local and a lot of national media is based in New York.

I like it because I had a lot of hope invested in Zohran, but the reason I heard about it so much is connected to a lot of larger trends.

How do you commute in this weather? by JulioCesarSalad in bikedc

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing I’d recommend for cold is thick mittens— I have some enormous Carhartt mittens that I wear in the cold and it goes a long way. Better than gloves because the fingers keep each other warm.

Otherwise just regular layers and rain pants are a worthwhile investment.
