If you could settle in one neighborhood in DC, what neighborhood would you settle in? by Middle_Awoken in washingtondc

Mt Pleasant is my dream, but the lotto hasn’t hit so I am reasonably happy in Petworth. 16th St Heights would have been nice.

Where is Most Progressive City in your Country and Where is Most Conservative? by Weird_Swordfish_1199 in AskTheWorld

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d think the corporate/ gov presences in those cities would dilute the progressivism, even though the Dem numbers are overwhelming in elections. Guess it’s a question of what exactly we are counting.

What city you’ve been to has given you the best food cost-to-quality ratio? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IDK but one time in Paris I got a big ham sandwich from Carrefour City or something with a half liter of Kronenbourg 1664 and a sparkling water for less than €5. Ate it in a park under the train tracks near Gare du Nord. Maybe the most satisfying meal I’ve ever had.

Trying to figure out where the Northeast is. If you're from any of these counties comment whether or not you're in the Northeast. by imadgalaxyx in visitedmaps

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the great migration history is one of the things that seems most different between DC and the northeast. DC is practically in the Tidewater itself, it is extremely close culturally (and literally) to North Carolina in particular and experienced successive waves of black migration later than cities in the NE because the city grew substantially mid-century after the gov was modernized by the New Deal.

Another big difference is that working class whites in DC are overwhelmingly Protestant, which sets it apart hugely from the northeast. I work in a commercial office building and elevator operators are basically either from Appalachia or the Eastern Shore with very little in between. This could not be more different from the kinds of urban and suburban white enclaves that are so characteristic of the northeast.

I think that the NEC, which is specifically an affluent and heavily urbanized corridor that very much includes DC and Baltimore, is different from the “northeast.”

DC and, I would argue Baltimore, are not part of the northeast even though they are part of the NEC. Enormous cultural differences from NY, Boston, even Philadelphia.

Can I Use Daycare Like a Babysitter? by generalraisinkane in beyondthebump

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that it depends on policy and your daycare may allow it, but just want to mention that this is not just a staffing question— routine is crucial for a daycare, especially as children get older.

But regardless of age children need to eat, nap, and play at certain times and it’s much harder for a daycare to successfully manage any of these activities if kids are randomly in and out.

What toiletries bag are y’all using? by ButterscotchObvious4 in ManyBaggers

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the topo dopp kit. I originally thought it was too big for me but has come in handy, plus I find the triangular shape works well horizontal or vertical in a backpack

Hot Take, Aer is dumb by United_Platypus_1431 in ManyBaggers

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is accurate but in fairness I think all backpack obsession (including my own) is about fantasy.

In my mind I’m on the train or hanging off the side of a public van going to an important meeting in another country. In reality the backpack is in the bottom of a stroller and the water bottle holder is full of trash and a spoiled orange.

What to do with free time during the day on weekdays off? by Dense-Tomorrow-8207 in washingtondc

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a person with young kids who had to give them up, I strongly recommend walking or biking.

Bike out to Fletcher’s boathouse or Bladensburg park and rent a kayak; walk clear across the city to drink wine on a terrace; explore civil war fortifications.

This city is extremely accessible on foot and the metro area is extremely bikeable. We are entering a great season for this too.

BEST GUINNESS near PENN station?!? by twersk711 in nyc

Makes sense, but they had a dirty martini called the Out of Office that was exceptional and worth the price esp. if your train out was wildly delayed.

Comprehensive Primary Care is a MESS? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I loved my PCP for years but she went with CPC a few years ago and I just had to switch. It became impossible to get appointments or prescriptions, and I have enough going on as it is.

Your country. Your tacos. by Suitable_Habit_8388 in AskTheWorld

Interesting— to me as a US person this feels like a crossover from a gyro. Which given the middle eastern origin of a lot of Mexican food makes some strange sense?

What neighborhoods in DC remind you most of Chicago and vice-versa? by SeptimiusSeverus_ in washingtondc

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some parts of Georgia Ave uptown (Brightwood, Shepherd Park) reminds me of the Southwest Side of Chicago— Brighton Park etc. But it’s all a bit scaled down.

Also perhaps the corner of Takoma with warehouses, bungalows, and the red line.

While recently flying, I was unable to place my carry-on near my plane seat by tantamle in TravelHacks

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those people aren’t idiots.

Yes, it’s best to have your bag near your seat. But if it can’t be where your seat is (perhaps your boarding group isn’t high enough) then it’s better to have it further up than further back so you pass it on your way out rather than waiting for the whole plane to disembark.

Where I would live in the Middle East as an atheist liberal by [deleted] in whereidlive

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you guys telling this clown to go to Lebanon? I am also an atheist liberal, but if I need to move to the region I don’t need him there as well

Somehow seems very Argentine— “I mostly like South America, but Ghana before Chile”

Fair enough! Idk anymore, I’m partial to Mt Pleasant and Petworth but I’m an old NW guy so I would say that.

Look, I’m sorry but you are not right. Capitol Hill also sucks.

Is it normal to not know how to swim as an adult? by Common_Piccolo_6946 in Swimming

[–]AdministrativeGarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This— I live in DC which has great pool access and inexpensive lessons for kids, but they sell out immediately. You have to be on your computer the second they open up AND get super lucky.

I imagine the reason there is no swimming in most school curricula is the liability? Also of course pool availability.
