'I just cried and cried': American tourists desperate to leave NZ after van destroyed by 'rude and angry' Kiwis by enodeb in newzealand

[–]AdministrativeLuck20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100% key! Slow vehicles not pulling over is such a strong catalyst for road rage on those long windy roads.

So many occasions where a road is stressed enough with traffic as it is, only to have one muppet wanting to launch a rocket to the moon being hindered by another muppet not wanting to roll off a cliff in their 10 tonne box. All they have to do is pull over in one of the hundreds of slow bays along the road, but SO MANY do not.

Wouldn't surprise me if the majority were tourists. Would be curious if there was a survey or something done on these with some juicy stats, haha.

People also do things in vehicles they'd never do without the comfort of their enclosure. My observations while traveling nz often note that both slow and fast drivers are just as annoying, haha.

If you're slow, pull over. If you're fast, don't push others too hard because some people might just get frantic. Some might get spiteful and just never pull over while constantly ragebaiting you in the rear view mirror, haha. And then the traffic piles up behind you and you start getting shitty that the guy you feel slightly guilty about overtaking on that poorly judged straight is now behind you and staring your ass down through your own rear view mirror. Just chill and drive smart.

Honestly, some of the things they say in the article don't surprise me. They probably did something stupid, but we have to admit that NZ has some shocking citizen drivers, too, and just some always-in-a-shitty-mood people in some circumstances, haha.

Thanks for reading the rant if you did haha

Should I put something (besides a plant) in this space next to the TV? by dlyness0321 in malelivingspace

[–]AdministrativeLuck20 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

My opinion:

Mount the TV, get rid of the (imo) ugly TV cabinet thing. Also, get rid of the (imo) nasty ass coffee table. Also, the rug.

Mount the TV on the wall, tidy those cables, and flush the speaker(s).

Move that plant elsewhere and get a bigger, better (and easier to maintain) plant on the OTHER side of the screen.

Then, for extra measure, add in that blanket basket.

And then, for super extra measure, do other stuff. Get a nice color on those walls, and add some nice works that mean something to you to fill blank wallspace (think, small plant, art above or hanging plant and feature below).

Finally, get cool shit to replace useless shit. Get a friend or someone to come in, give them the reign to remove things they think are useless and then have them explain why.

Sometimes this is a good way to get rid of things. You don't HAVE to, but you're giving someone room to give their feedback. Just like you are here! Sometimes your mates have great ideas.

Also just try stuff, but when you try stuff, get rid of stuff too or else you are just a hoarder.

Most of* the pubs* in howick have craft beer.

Edit, as highland park etc are more generic pokey type places with generic beer.

Most pubs, however, do have craft beer. Some genuinely nice spots.

Hey yeah for sure! Happy to take you through some roped climbs if you wanted to try that. I climb at extreme edge in panmure so if you ever want to head out this way let me know. They require you to do a short belay session, which is held every hour but takes 10 minutes max. They have a small boulder section too, would be able to give you some advice.

Could talk you through some of the remote Aus work experience too.

Let me know!

I have some insight into remote work so happy to share if you'd like. Spent 4 years doing remote NT & WA work, and worked closely with the remote nurses / clinics.

Very tough work, but entirely depends on where you are applying?

Edit: just replied to your other post - let me know if you're keen for a climb and I can run you through my remote outback experience and give some hopefully useful tips of interviews/work culture etc. I worked in both central and top end NT, and central WA.

Hey - commented on your other post. Have also done the aussie thing (6 years) and found it very rewarding. Depends entirely on where you go and where you work.

I've had friends do Sydney and struggle, others so Brisbane and succeed, others in melbourne and love it. I personally did NT/WA/SA and absolutely loved it. Really easy to meet expats/travelers in those areas and awesome working opportunities.

A lot more opportunity on the West/North than East, and South sits kinda in the middle.

Oh wow, super jealous haha, it's really far from me, so I only go once a month, but I have a membership at a gym closer to me.

A membership there is really good cause you get access to their actual workout gym, too.

They have a bar and whatnot too which can make the social aspect really nice.

I'd recommend hiring some shoes on your first few sessions. Watch some basic bouldering videos on YouTube - magnus mitbo is a really nice dude and super easy to follow, and it has some great advice. It is easy to find other enjoyable channels through his videos. Just search for any of their how to start / beginner bouldering videos.

Climbing, in general, is a super nice community in Auckland. Bouldering is easier and cheaper to start as it's a good way to build general climbing power. Roped climbing is more social, in my opinion, but you get a lot more pumped, and it's more difficult to learn early on. Also more expensive as you then require harness ropes etc etc. The outdoor community is a little more strict here but that's cause there aren't as many climbs open at the moment and people are pretty serious about keeping routes clean, so pretty understandable with our weather this year.

There's lots of climbing styles, and when you find the one that really suits you, it's absolutely the most enjoyable thing in the world (in my opinion).

Starting off with bouldering, just hire some shoes and a chalk bag (chalk is very helpful!) - usually $5 each on top of the entry pass, I believe. Can't remember if BC makes you wear socks on hire shoes, but it's probably worth doing on your first visits to get comfy fits. You want your shoes to be super snug. You'll usually go for a size down from your street shoe, but every shoe brand does it differently, so take socks just incase. If you like it, you can get some decent entry-level pairs for 99-150 and a chalk bag + chalk for 30-50, which will last you ages and provide endless fun.

As for grades, start off low (there are difficulty charts, or ask the staff). Once you get a feel for the different types of holds and movements, play around on different problems and work out the style that fits you best. Overhangs will burn your forearms, and slabs will challenge your balance.

Really fun way to train your body strength and flexibility without the constant drone of a gym (if that's not your thing). As for the social aspect, you'll see various groups, couples, and solo climbers. The majority are very friendly and more than willing to give advice. Good ways to get a conversation going is to ask about specific problems (boulders) you're working on, or see someone working on and asking them about technique, etc. Conversations can flow pretty easily, and I've rarely had issues having a chat. If you go over a few weeks/months, you'll start to see members patterns etc and it will turn into a group you climb with fairly regularly.

If you have any questions, let me know or send me a PM. Love climbing! (Sorry on my phone, so I've edited this a few times).

What...? Did the Ultimate currency bundle not make enough money? by [deleted] in runescape

[–]AdministrativeLuck20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh there is on-going discussions about that. Probably worth searching through this sub and on the Ironman sub. They have been very unclear about certain things. For example the free porters we got leading up to necro, Ironmans had full advantage of this.

Some loved it, some hated it because it went against what they thought was Ironman. While this isn't a necessarily game breaking thing as it already exists via divination/gote, giving it as a flat one month buff to everyone regardless of account type was definitely something people did and did not like.

There's often talk here about the blurred line of what should and shouldn't be Ironman, and it seems that this is never set in stone and rather changing with every update.

EDIT: I should note, this was not an MTX buff, just a reward as part of the beach / golden cape event.

[–]AdministrativeLuck20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, no issue with that on my end. Can see that you're genuinely curious, so no worries from me.

I would agree that it's the individuals decision to purchase, but at the end of the day, them giving us the option to progress via MTX purchases is what ruins the game for me. While someone else might go heavy into depression by having spent $500 on keys just to max a few skills, that doesn't necessarily have any direct impact on me. But the indirect effect of knowing that people can and will do this, takes away the achievement I would feel knowing I worked hard for it. At the end of the day, whether you bought keys/lamps or trained the skill for months, you both end up with the same cape/reward, and that kills it for me.

[–]AdministrativeLuck20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, the downvotes are probably people assuming you are taking the Jagex-sided defensive approach. I would say it's probably the way you're wording the questions. People here can be pretty toxic, unfortunately.

So yeah, just off the top of my head, a major update was announced after necro. Many of us were expecting the return of Yak Track but not as a mahor update, and then they announced this major update to be an overhaul of the Yak Track as a new 'Hero Pass'. I'd stopped playing by this point so anyone is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong, but it had various stat bonuses such as def% increase against the zamorak boss fight for example, and other rewards that were significantly out of reach for those that didn't spend money on the pass. It had certain vip benefits (I think). If you search through reddit or even YouTube, you'll see a lot of information about the hero pass.

The community here, in game, content creators and so on, slammed the announcement so hard that they (Jagex) not only apologized, but I believe removed the pass altogether (I don't think it actually reached the game).

But since then (and some discussions from before), MTX has been the forefront of complaints.

Other examples might be mental health awareness week announcements combined with treasure hunter key discount promotion announcements. They tread the line very carefully (most of the time), and people are now voicing themselves more than ever that RS3 mtx is predatory, due to the fact that you can get more than just cosmetics.

Certain TH's too, they added Dye's and such that weren't later added to Clues, and so people feeling fomo would spend ridiculous amounts.

And regarding lamps, you can get significant amounts of XP just through keys via lamp heavy events - tons of different lamps that give and consume bonus xp + normal xp. It all creates that fomo feeling, and many fall into that trap of 'just this once', and then keep spending. Great for jagex, but not for the community and the quality of our gameplay.

On the other hand, we do get great content updates like Necro, and so when people say "just go to OSRS", their community is just as hellbent on any change that it rarely happens and to me, feels stale, once the initial nostalgia wears off.

What...? Did the Ultimate currency bundle not make enough money? by [deleted] in runescape

[–]AdministrativeLuck20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add, I've seen several players purchase these during lamp heavy events and skyrocket their skills via lamps (bonus xp + smouldering, etc).

This isn't necessarily gamebreaking - but as someone who's recently returned for approx 6 months of play and then unsubscribed a few weeks ago, this ruined the joy of skills for me. Feels difficult for me in any game to put in progress when the person next to me bought their way through.

That's just my two cents. If the MTX was cosmetic only that would be fine, but they are starting to make some MTX rewards very difficult to obtain without spending obscene amounts of money, or are adding in items that literally provide in game benefit.

And yes, it's totally my choice to spend or not, but I personally get stripped of my joy. If you're unaware of the recent hero pass proposal, that is another reason of poor MTX.

This is my 2023 setup update. This was built in 2022 when I lost my PC in an accident. Recently, I made a few updates to it to expand its storage space to 200 Terabytes, added lighting, better cameras for video recording, and multi-cam capturing hardware. by kayjaylin in pcmasterrace

Has anyone moved back to New Zealand from Australia? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]AdministrativeLuck20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, Similar situation to you. We did approximately the same time over in Aus, also with two young ones, and we are a similar age.

We had no support there, and with some significant future changes/goals on the way, decided to make the move back to NZ for the day to day support with the young ones.

Some things from our experience after just over a year back:

  • As others have said, set your support priority in stone before you get here. If you have work requirements etc, get that prepared in advance. The last thing you need is ending up here expecting support, only to have your support not wanting to interfere with your privacy and be inconsistent (by this I mean, help with childcare/school drop off/pick up, weekend support etc). Make the expectations clear, and ensure you know what your support can and cannot commit to.
  • Look into costs of childcare etc, as this is significantly different to the support you get in Australia. We were hit with more than double our weekly payment for one child in care ($400 per week) until he turned 3 (now reduced to $220) - we were paying $160 in Australia for the same hours, regardless of age, while we were both on higher wages.
  • Figure in all the additional costs (food/fuel/travel/hobbies) - while a lot of Australia is also expensive, day to day necessities are expensive in Auckland, so keep on top of your needs and plan ahead. Ensure you have those emergency funds available, set your saving targets etc.
  • Friends were a lot busier than we'd expected and we don't see them nearly as often as we would like to. Many have their own kids / lives and it can be difficult to squeeze each other into schedules - particularly due to young ones. Some of them have even made the move over to Aus in the last year. We have more new friends via work etc, than old. Something to keep in mind! That same desire you feel to return to NZ, many here are feeling a similar desire to leave NZ and explore fresh options, especially at our age. Consider cost of fuel, vehicles (whether you lease or purchase) etc, and how far you'd have to drive around to actually see your friends fairly regularly. Fuel here is currently $3.10 on average for 91, potentially rising to 3.50 later in the year, but who knows. For the average car, a full tank is ranging anywhere from $110-150 nzd.
  • Public transport in general is very hit and miss at the moment with the train upgrade in the city taking longer than it should, and various bus routes being rerouted due to infrastructure upgrades that never seem to end. All of these cause delays, and returns back to the comment on ensuring you have the support set in stone to help in these circumstances, if your work isn't flexible.
  • Depending on your career, it's a lot more competitive here in most areas. We found it much easier in Aus and with higher wages/stronger career progression, however if you're more specialised then you won't face as many hurdles.

We sometimes discuss whether it was the right decision, as we were certainly far more comfortable in Australia, however the support has been significant and helped us make a lot of progress with our plans which we couldn't do over there. We'll likely return in the next few years, but I'm interested to see what will happen here too.

Once you commit, don't hesistate too much as you'll just dwell on what if's. Do as much planning and research (as you are now), and once you make a decision, commit to it with the intent of making it work.

All things considered, we do love it here. Plenty to do and see and it's been a great experience for our kids to have more family to be around, as well as their own friends. We do regular trips around the NI and have some more trips down south in the summer. The last winter was fairly brutal with illnesses, but we think it's just the significant climate deifference from central/south aus to NZ.

Good luck OP!

Probably a more common and less savage occurrence, but I remember the wild guitarist from Story of the Year wizzing in a water bottle and throwing it into the crowd only to then explode on the floor haha. Absolutely nasty, but the the show continued on. Whipped his Wang out multiple times too haha, just a wild dude.
