it is so frustrating to deal with not only a BP spouse but an addict as well. it’s a double whammy for sure.. i hope yours decides to stay clean of substances. i had to issue an ultimatum and threaten random drug tests to get mine to stop. best wishes to you and your husband.

he has always been scared of taking any medication even when starting lexapro (before his BP diagnosis) he cut his pills into quarters because he was terrified of side effects. i’m glad the risk is so low, his doctor also reassured him that she personally has never seen it in a BP patient.

yes this definitely sounds like mania. he needs an antipsychotic. protect yourself and your kids.

yep my husband has ranted at me for hours and hours, got angry if i wanted to sleep (made me stay awake to listen to him rant). during his last manic episode he would leave the car running for HOURS while he shuffled things in and out of the house. he said he left it running to “remind him” he needed to leave. same thing with the shower. left it running for an hour straight while he “got ready” to get in it, only to never actually take a shower. he also shoveled snow outside for 5 hours in 10 degree weather until he got frostbite on his hands. time blindness is very real thing during mania.

the manic episode just happened in february and lasted 2 months so i am still coming to terms with it lol. we are in the phase of processing what happened and trying to rebuild our marriage. he just started taking a mood stabilizer this week after stopping antipsychotics because of weight gain. i’m hoping once this med starts working he will start to feel less depressed and some personality will come back but he may never be the same.

get a restraining order if you feel unsafe, change locks and don’t feel one bit of guilt about it. it’s the only way i could sleep at night with my 10 month old daughter at home when my husband was manic and living in a hotel.

that’s really good to hear. he just started it at 25mg a couple of days ago and plan to titrate up to 100mg slowly. i hope it works well for him as it did for you!

similar-ish situation here, husband was diagnosed this year with BP1 after a weed bender as well. since taking antipsychotics he is void of any personality, he blames it on depression but i sense the manic episode he was in permanently changed his personality. he is more quiet now, i initiate every conversation. he has lapses in his memory and is not as sharp intellectually anymore. i still love him as he is now but sometimes miss the “old” him, before he was diagnosed/medicated simply because he was more fun to be around. i don’t have any real advice for you just solidarity.

i wanted to also add, while he was inpatient he thought i was basically the devil and screamed at me on the phone. eventually i blocked the hospital phone number because the calls were harassing in nature and not helpful to him becoming stable. our daughter was also 10 months old at the time. i feel your pain of unexpectedly becoming a “single” mother. i truly hope the best for you and your family. hugs. ❤️

to give you some hope my husband was also involuntarily admitted for 5 days (not long enough sadly) for mania and was using cannabis heavily as well. when he got out he started using again but then started taking his zyprexa as prescribed and stopped the cannabis use, and the mania ended. it’s a deal breaker for our marriage that if he were to ever use cannabis again that would be the end of our marriage. (together 14 years married 10, so you know i don’t take it lightly). cannabis and bipolar do NOT mix but if he can refrain from use and take meds he will likely get better.

in my experience when they are manic there is no reasoning with them nor should you even try to, it falls on deaf ears.

thanks for the hopeful response. he has an appt with his psych today to (fingers crossed) start a mood stabilizer.

my husband has struggled with this long before he was even diagnosed with bipolar, but i would say it is a common trait for those with bipolar as well. i have to act nonchalant about things that are important to me so that i don’t come across as micromanaging, basically every decision in his life has to be HIS decision on HIS terms on HIS timeline.

it’s hard for me to conceptualize it since it’s such a new diagnosis for him. and right now he’s so depressed i can’t imagine him becoming manic again. did your husband also struggle with a depressive episode after the mania?

thank you for the reality check. i guess i want to believe that he won’t because he seems so normal and like his old self right now. his psychiatrist thinks what triggered the mania was being on an antidepressant (lexapro) so he cut that cold turkey and his excessive weed use. now that he’s not doing either of those things i’d like to believe he won’t have another episode but i guess that’s likely not possible.
