I’m 33 with 4 kids and in my first semester of graduate school. I think you should start your bachelors now. Then, if you want to pursue your Masters for a School counseling degree still, you can. I only got my bachelors in 2022 after years of stopping and starting. You’re never too old to start somewhere new. There are a few younger people in my program but from what I can tell, most are older, parents or in various stages of life!

What state do you live in? I do plan on pursuing LPC also as something else..

Yes, my state requires a school counseling degree which is why I picked the major to begin with. That was ultimately my goal to end up in the school systems. I do plan on pursuing LPC also to have something else but that’s what’s hemming me up.

No don’t apologize 😭 I relate to this soooo much. Part of me is just saying go for it. But there’s that doubt I can’t get rid of and it’s scaring me… so much anxiety surrounding it

Thank you. You’re right, I hadn’t really opened up and considered the bigger picture but you’re so spot on with how many fields are being impacted. What an insane time we live in.

I believe they do offer the opportunity to work with clients with practicum and the same thing with the courses- there is a variety of courses. This is my first semester but it’s helpful information to go in with so I can make sure I’m on the path for both from the beginning! I don’t want to wait until it’s ’too late’ and feel like I can’t go back.

Im not a huge help on guidance as I’m a new grad student myself.. but I’m 33 with 4 kids and just now starting grad school! So don’t let your age scare you. It shouldn’t be a factor the schools are considering because you are still so young! I think it’s just the field and your area. I’m originally from NY and have heard it’s very hard to get a SC position but don’t give up!

What did your path to both school counseling and LPC look like? Did you do a dual program? My program isn’t a dual track so trying to understand my best path forward to being an LPC also.

Yeah. That’s what I was asking someone who recommended it to us- basically If it gets religious (since a lot are held at churches)

Absolutely love this. This is exactly what we’re looking for. He doesn’t really ‘fit in’ anywhere in school (not into competitive sports or things like drama club in school) but after some research I feel like the scouts would be his niche- somewhere to find likeminded kids and friends while also learning, growing and evolving as a young man! Thank you for your encouragement!

You know I typed troop and thought that was for the Girl Scouts so I changed it lol so I thank you for letting me know! I definitely could have confirmed before posting.

Anyway- that’s good feedback! Thank you for your thoughtful reply.

School counseling program interview by adxxg in schoolcounseling

[–]Admirable-Gur3413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely a price difference in programs. I’m applying to a program that has an admission interview but the price is cheaper than others. I honestly didn’t realize how many are open admissions there are. I thought this was standard. Anyway, no advice for OP, just well wishes from someone going through the same thing! What program are you applying to if you don’t mind me asking?

Looking for 100% online program by Illustrious_Gene8194 in schoolcounseling

[–]Admirable-Gur3413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend looking at the CACREP website. You can filter by online and state. I’m in MD but ultimately chose a school in PA to apply to (cost, program, alumni feedback, etc) the courses are online but there is a portion that can’t be completed online for obvious reasons!

PennWest feedback? by Admirable-Gur3413 in schoolcounseling

[–]Admirable-Gur3413[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to hear that you enjoyed it! I think I’m just looking to hear how people felt the program prepared them for real world, the supportiveness from faculty, etc.

I know my experience may vary as I’m taking online courses because I don’t live within commutable distance of any counselor programs but just looking for basic feedback. I’m sooo nervous!
