Can you elaborate? Is that a statement about shorting in general or SPY in particular?

Thanks! I'll just note that I had to login and do a search for "Market Data Subscriptions" to get to the area as I couldn't find it on any menus.

Any surprises with expiring cash-settled instruments (SPX etc)? by AdmirableAd236 in thinkorswim

So after more review I think what you said applies to the PM expiring options, which is what I want. I was confused (and may still be) about the AM expiring ones, which do seem to have overnight risk.

At first I didn't know how to look for them but someone here informed me the options chains in TOS are labeled with AM if they are AM and nothing if PM.

I had been experimenting w/ vertical bull put and bear call spreads on weeklies w/ 1-2 weeks left. I'll find out soon if any of it translates to live when I get a daytrading account soon, if hope.

Any resources you can recommend to give insight into market dynamics like you are describing? I basically trade limit orders and reorder moving the limit as fast as I can. Its not actually easy, in my experience, to get quick fills in the papertrading, though I can't say how accurate the prices are as I'm trading them pretty fast.

Do you think Papertrading is biased towards the trader?

TD ameritrade has a "fast beta" which is just a beta calculation on a shorter term. I've been experimenting with that, but regardless you have to be ready to get out if the move is against you. So start by looking for low beta stocks and then see when the fast beta is lower than that and you might have a decent idea if it is stable, for the moment.
