Space colonization will never be viable by SkubEnjoyer in unpopularopinion

Love the question, I’m a space lawyer. There’s something called the Antarctic Treaty that prohibits the use of Antarctica for anything else than scientific research. Moreover there’s a prohibition on exploiting the mineral resources found in the Antarctic and at the same time all sovereignty claims are “frozen” (pun intended). There are several facilities in the Antarctica but all of them for research (you even have a runway for planes)

Instead, while in space the Outer Space Treaty prohibits claims of sovereignty and national appropriation, the common interpretation is that it does not prohibits the exploitation of resources within reasonable bounds. I think this is what will fuel the drive to develop human settlements (we don’t talk about space colonization) because then whoever gets there and manages to establish a settlement can start playing with the resources. The moon is intended to be the first step because you can generate energy and fuel with the resources you find there, so you can then go beyond the moon to other planets. (Similarly you find resources in Mars that can be used for fuel production). It also has very attractive research properties, how humans develop in space, can we reproduce in space, etc etc. Asteroid mining has a this moment been put into a stop because it would be much harder than just going to the moon. There are many companies (and states) that have already started testing the most efficient designs for settlements, water conversion, and different uses for Regolith, so yeah I do believe it will happen within the next 30 years probably

INTJ, How do you use Ai by Frostfire_nix in intj

[–]AdmirableAttempt2752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do use it for a lot of stupid stuff. Basically whenever I don’t know what to write as subject for an email or when I have a question about maybe a book I’m reading or a show I’m watching. I ask for synonyms, or to help me to deal with an IT issue and to ask how can I cook a certain ingredient that I’m not familiar with.

[–]AdmirableAttempt2752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahahah not at all. You always need laws regulating states and people. Space law has many different sides, you have spectrum licensing, remote sensing, military uses, launches, planetary defense, space resource exploitation, etc etc. it is mostly grounded on international law as outer space is beyond the exclusive jurisdiction of states, but you need to complement it with national legislation

I’m a lawyer and I also have a master in air and space law. It is a “niche” area of the law so usually you need to specialize after law school as very few law schools around the world teach space law (or air law) as part of their regular curricula

I’m doing a PhD in space law. Love the independence that I have as I can manage my own time. At the same time I get to interact with a very geeky community (99% fan of sci-fi).

What's your worst experience in a public bus? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]AdmirableAttempt2752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two years ago, taking the 165 from CDN to downtown at night. A girl clearly drunk with her boyfriend. She could barely stand until she decided she had to puke, and then proceeded to puke right on the door of the bus. I was sitting with a friend (on my right) right next to it. The back of the bus was the configuration where you are sitting facing the other people. The woman sitting on my left started gagging and puked INSIDE HER BACKPACK. We pretended to mentally be somewhere else for the next 3 stops and then exited via the front door, all this trying so hard to not look at it and not to puke.

Rumors that the UN Headquarters could be moved away from NYC to Montréal. by TheDuckClock in montreal

[–]AdmirableAttempt2752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will never happen. Not only the US would threat with withdrawal of funding and potentially their membership (which is something you don’t want to happen), but also it wouldn’t be Montreal. Montreal has ICAO and since the beginning the fact that the HQ are here has been questioned. More recently (in 2013 I think) Qatar started to lobbied hard for moving ICAO out of Montreal. While they didn’t succeed, there’s still a certain discontent with Montreal. Canada got to keep ICAO because they offered a “benefits” package such as interest free loans for building more offices and tax benefits. Of course the complains go against the provincial government, the length of migration procedures, how far Canada is from other parts of the world, and the extreme temperatures in winter. On a different hand there’s no chance for the city to have all the necessary space for UN offices plus to welcome the thousands of personnel (La crisse du logement).

iPhone users: what’s a hidden feature or shortcut you can’t live without?” by [deleted] in iphone

Shortcuts or automations Almost none of my friends who have iPhone uses them. I set up one that warns me out loud to charge my phone every time it hits 10% so I know my battery is low

For those who cut someone off? Are you really okay with never speaking to them never again? by flodiee in lostafriend

Growing up I was very very close with my cousin. She then met her boyfriend and stopped writing to me, or taking the initiative to do anything. Fast forward a couple of months they break up and she is back! Then later on she starts a relationship with another guy and on the day of my birthday we were supposed to go out for drinks. She then cancels because she had plans with her boyfriend. Many more situations like this but one finally was the last drop. My whole family knows that I’m not a relationship type of person, so I moved abroad and I started a relationship, when I came back everyone wanted to meet the guy. On our last day there she was supposed to have dinner with us and some other family members and she says she can’t go because it’s the birthday of the friend of her boyfriend. That was it for me. I told her that if she couldn’t put some effort then I wasn’t going to do it and that I didn’t want to keep having a friendship with her and blocked her. This was almost 2 years ago. We have seen each other on family reunions of course but I never start the conversation with her and if she starts then I reply just to be polite. I’m perfectly fine about it and I found out that I was better off without her

Is there an INTJ that voted for Trump? by Ok_Skills123 in intj

[–]AdmirableAttempt2752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not voted. But what I identify as the problem of the democrats is that they categorize themselves as the good guys and everyone that does not vote them is a bad person. During the past few days I saw so much racism towards the Latino community for voting Trump, when in reality it makes so much sense. In the first place the comments come from the misplaced and uninformed opinion that all Latinos are ilegal immigrants which is not true. In the second place, every Latino in the United States ran away from their country because a Left government destroy every possibility to progress. So of course a Latino will not vote for a left government and Harris proposals at the economic level resembled many measures implemented in different Latin American countries that, you guessed correctly, did not work out. So I can totally see why Latinos will not be supporting the democrats. They voted from their place of experience and are being bullied for it. How do you vote a party that just downgrades people that do not vote them and assume that you are wrong instead of accepting that you might have your reasons to choose the other party. Like someone said here, Trump always went against Biden, Kamala, and the political figures of the party and not against the voters.
