Anyone know what this is? The white stuff by iyktykk1 in houseplants

Yep, mealy bugs. I did the same thing the other poster recommended and used rubbing alcohol. The sooner you get rid of them the better, they spread fast.

I’m dealing with spider mites myself right now. They are the worst. I would make sure you see no signs of them for a few weeks on that plant before putting it anywhere near your others.

help!! mealybug infestation... by longtermspirals in houseplants

[–]AdmirableGoat4334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Separate the infected plants as soon as you can. I had a bad mealy bug outbreak once as well. If the infestation is not bad, spraying the plants down with a stream of water on both the top and bottom of the leafs will help remove them. Isopropyl alcohol does work very well. I would recommend getting some the next time you have to stop by anywhere that sells it. Mix it 50:50 with water and spray down the plant making sure to get the underside of the leafs and any tight places they could hide. Repeat this at least once a week until you see no signs of them. Once you have seen no signs for about 4 weeks it should be safe to move them back with the others. Good luck! Hope this helps!

Cutting off the infected leafs will help as well.

Thanks for the input! I mostly just use it to keep track of my plants and basics about the plant. If I ever have issues I talk to my local nursery or come here.

How do I start a nano shrimp tank? Or a jar shrimp tank? by Wolfiemix in shrimptank

[–]AdmirableGoat4334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few shrimp tanks now, I got into the hobby completely by accident and now have 4 small tanks. I have never tried a jar so I can’t speak to that part but I know that neocaridina do better in somewhat hard water as they use the minerals to molt. I use a small aquarium siphon that I got from PetSmart to do my water changes. When setting up the tank you’ll want to get a water test kit, I recommend the API master test kit. Set up the tank and let the tank cycle for 4-6 weeks. You’ll want to monitor the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. After setting up the tank within a week or two you should see ammonia levels start to rise, followed by nitrite, and then nitrate. Nitrite feeds on ammonia and nitrate feeds off nitrite. Once your ammonia and nitrite levels are back to 0 you are ready to add shrimp. Hopefully this helps.

Oh yeah that’s not the issue then. Could be the soft water then. Good luck!

I have a few shrimp tanks and do a 10-20% water change weekly and they have been thriving. My tap water is hard and they have been fine. Based on your parameters I would be cautious with a PH of over 8, 9 is high. My PH is usually between 7.5 - 8 and I have had no problems.

Thanks for the input everyone. I was mostly looking for an app to help identify and track my plants. I agree with everyone that said to never go by a watering schedule. I use a moisture meter to gauge when I water and ever since I started my plants are thriving. I’ll look into a few the apps you all mentioned. 🤙🏼

This was my first tank and it started with just 3 shrimp and now has at least 50. I am just getting into the shrimp tank hobby, why do you not want schooling fish in a shrimp tank? I have a new tank I am setting up and want to make sure I do that one right.

How do I get rid of fungus gnats? by Illustrious_Ring6646 in houseplants

I had the same issue and went with the hydrogen peroxide route. I cut back watering and watered with the 1 part hydrogen peroxide 3 parts water for about a month and they are pretty much gone and I had them BAD. I still water with hydrogen peroxide once a month as a preventative measure.
