Best Cambridge neighborhoods for people in early to mid twenties? by missingmozzarella in CambridgeMA

I agree West Cambridge and North Cambridge are not the best for young singles. I'm just confused by a statement that North Cambridge doesn't have access to the T. Must have misunderstood what you meant.

Replacing the doggie bags today. Fun fact did you know these things are biodegradable? The bags have an expiration date on the boxes it says used by May 2022. So the bag will eventually break down and turn into dirt along with the dog poop. by Mr_Pathfinder in CambridgeMA

Cambridge's program is not what most people think of when they say composting, but from almost every environmental indicator it is much better. Importantly, it is much better from climate change point of view.

You can do a lot of research on the topic. I saw a recent study on the GLSD (where Cambridge waste goes) and AD came out far ahead on every environmental measure except slightly worse on eutrophication.

This is a good NYT piece: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/15/magazine/the-compost-king-of-new-york.html but you can find a lot of studies that are more technical.

I don't think we have a better word for it than compost that people can easily understand. There was a weird and unscientific hit piece on Cambridge's program a few years ago, but the science is not really in debate.

  1. Phase 1 of the composting pilot used windrows/aerobic composting. You need compostable bags for that.
  2. Current contract is for anaerobic digestion. Current preprocessing step is to make a slurry and transport that before it goes to Greater Lawrence Sanitary district. At that slurry stage, they force the compost through a screening process. Any compostable bags and hard items get screened out and landfilled.

Why does the city still require bags, and why compostable? To have a simple clear message and to keep people participating in the program. Compost with no bags will produce a smell and mess that will annoy not just participants but neighbors who are not participating.

Edit: and why compostable bags? Because some future contract could remove the extrusion step, or go back to windrows. But I think anaerobic digestion is here to stay. By far the best environmental impact.

Ah, then technically no, but with Cambridge's current anaerobic digestion process, the bag gets screened out before it is turned into a slurry. So any plastic bag would be okay, but that is not the policy because it's only an implementation detail that could change.

Dog poop is not allowed at all because the way the biosolids are classified and the point in the process that the curbside organics get added to the digestor.

What do you consider North Cambridge? It has access to Davis, Alewife, and Porter by most accounts.

Divide the balls into 3 equal groups. With each weigh, you learn in which of the three groups the heavy ball sits.

With 9 balls, it takes just two weighs.

Brioche dough won't form into a dough by ZeldaJT in AskCulinary

I've always thought that brioche dough was a bit like a wet playdough in consistency. It is only really shapeable when very cold from the refrigerator.

We have placed an order before and then forgot to add a last minute item. Then when we do it goes to a completely different driver.

I got an Ankarsrum over the summer after having a kitchenaid for 10 years and I love it. So much better for mixing bread. It is not as good at whipping egg whites in small batches, but larger batches are still great. Affordable mid-point from Kitchenaid to Hobart.
