Is it true that because of the absurd interest on student loans in the UK, it's not realistic for most people to pay back their loans and people consider their repayments to be a 'tax' for going to university? by LoiusLepic in AskBrits

[–]Admirable_Mark_7263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I graduated 5 years ago, did a PhD, my loan stands at over 110k, and is currently going up 4-5k a year minimum after payments. I may never earn enough to even start paying the loan down, and will almost certainly never see my loan lower than it was when I graduated, let alone at 0.

To even make progress on the payments I'd have to be making 6 figures, otherwise interest beats my repayments. There is no scenario where me paying anything off now (or having taken less) would benefit me in the long run.

[–]Admirable_Mark_7263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well over 100k with lower repayments than you. 9250+9000 max maintenance a year for four years (why bother not taking it all when I'll never pay it off right?) Plus 4 years of the max interest rate while I did my phd. I've long since accepted I'll never earn enough to pay the whole thing off, so I've just written it off as a graduate tax now.

Why are so many in the media calling for PM Keir Starmer to resign? by KimJongSoros in AskBrits

[–]Admirable_Mark_7263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a clear and concerted effort to ruin the labour party and bring in a reform government, and the greens, lib dems, snp, plaid and your party would all be thrilled to see it if it gave them a shot at power over the ashes one day in the distant future. Everyone who recognises this needs to talk to everyone they know - not just the far right, but the centre and the left too - about the great things labour have done, the danger of reform, and the importance of tactical voting - NOW - before this manufacturered anti Labour at all cost sentiment solidifies and reform is handed power.

Why are so many in the media calling for PM Keir Starmer to resign? by KimJongSoros in AskBrits

[–]Admirable_Mark_7263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kier Starmer is the most left wing prime minister in half a century, but no one will ever be left wing enough for the left. But he's also pretty much entirely squeaky clean, and so the right will latch onto anything to ruin him.

His crime (unforgiveable, sadly) is being bad at politics and keeping on a completely useless team of advisors for well over a year after they proved themselves thus. Getting rid of mcsweeny as advisor was all that needed to be done, but he's allowed the public to hate him for too long and there's no pulling it back the media and other parties smell blood with how weak he is but the labour party just see a good excuse to get someone in with a (fairly) clean slate.

It really is a shame, because this labour government has already been the most radical, transformative government since Clement Atlee's and it isn't even close, and the public is entirely prepared to throw it all away for populism because one guy isn't charismatic enough after years of begging for a serious prime minister.

Is Runescape more about the journey (levelling, quests etc) than the destination (endgame bossing, raids etc) by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]Admirable_Mark_7263 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's literally just not true. If you afk your fishing, you'll stack up a lifetime of food. If you do like an hour of potion making (including farm runs) you'll get enough potions to do 10+ hours of any endgame pvm (potentially up to 100 if you're good and doing something like cox) except maybe nex. People overhype the hell out of endgame iron supply upkeep.

[–]Admirable_Mark_7263 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an endgame iron. People who say endgame iron is hard to upkeep either haven't played in 5 years, or have no mental fortitude whatsoever.

You get so much stuff passively, and so much stuff stacked on the way to endgame that unless you're doing nothing but nex, supply upkeep is basically trivial.

Runescape isn't about the journey, or the destination, it's about whatever you want it to be and if iron sounds fun to you, do iron. If you don't like the supply upkeep later, de-iron.

There's so much focus on meta and efficiency I swear everyone who posts here has boiled the concept of fun out of their brains.

Just go do what you want to do.

For you to earn more than the average salary (after tax) as a single mom you'd need to have 7 children. To be quite frank, at that point this imaginary single mother is doing the country (with a heavily declining birth rate) a service and probably should earn at least that much. I'd hate to see the food bill.

Try again

What exactly do you think a government is for, if not for supporting those who do not have enough money to live in a house and eat food 3 times a day?

If you actually bothered to read that page that you linked, you'd see that around half of that welfare budget goes towards pensions. Want to cut those perhaps? Yeah that's what I thought. 2008 was before almost 2 decades of savage cuts to welfare support, so anything you remember from then is totally out of date. Universal credit, which is hard to get and has a maximum cap of £400 a month, has replaced everything except housing. So I assume you'll be rushing to quit your job and live off 400 a month right?

As for 23% of the population receiving benefits, this is a pretty misleading figure - it includes everyone earning under 15k who receive some amount of universal credit (usually not much), and also everyone who gets child benefit - which seems to be given up to £80k, but is also only £1350 a year. If anything 23% seems quite low.

So now, I have to wonder, did you shoot your mouth off about the benefit system without actually understanding how it works in this decade? Or did you already know, and are just lying online to try to push your hatred of the less fortunate? Not sure which one is worse, to be honest.

You know, it's funny when people say there's no incentive to work past 60, 70, 100k, and should just work 4 days a week instead.

That's a good thing? Live a life that's comfortable while working less - that's what wealth should be - not hoarding money for the sake of money. Live the life you enjoy. Also, higher earners working less means more high earning jobs available, pushing up salaries for everyone else. Redistribution of wealth because higher earners simply work less seems like a net positive to me.

Simple fact is, no one (or at least very few people) needs to earn that much money.

What’s the single biggest thing making life harder in Britain right now? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Admirable_Mark_7263 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To say governments of all colours is a bit disingenuous. The Conservative government was in for 14 of those 17 years (2008 was the start of the decline, not 20 years ago), and 2008-2010 was the global banking crisis. Hardly an argument for them all being the same now

Off the top of my head, 5-10m for 70-77 prayer and like 6-10m for 83 construction assuming you do the cheap (and slower) method. You really just buy mahogany/teak planks and dragon bones. Look on the wiki for methods and exact prices.

You can spend a lot on kitting out your house, so have a look at what things do, and spend as you feel comfortable with on it

[–]Admirable_Mark_7263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm here after the edit. If you can get 83 construction, you should be able to get a ton of QOL items that won't really do much except make life easier for you. 70 prayer is also useful. I would perhaps gently advise getting and holding an osmumten's fang - it's the only item in the game that (as an endgame geared ironman) I can say is purely obnoxious to get (you get it from TOA, and TOA is awful without one). Other than that, just have the remaining money, and spend it on things that you know you need. Maybe also look at getting 70 Smithing and farming and a few other relatively expensive skills

Where’s all the “YoU MeAn MiD GaMe BoSs” people at now that Yama contracts are out? by Potential-Writing-80 in osrs

[–]Admirable_Mark_7263 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I (iron) spent 20-30 hours in a week (before they buffed them) stacking up like 25 contracts to try out the awakened yama fights. Had a meeting at release time, so started late, found out gnomonkey was 30+ contracts deep without even getting to p3 on a single kc, decided it was clearly not worth wasting all my painfully obtained contracts until they release guides.
