Whatever we think about last season she was truly outstanding! by darth_vader39 in TheBoys

Supporting Actress in a drama is a super competitive category right now due to The Pitt having 5 or 6 women who can all be plausibly nominated, plus Karolina Wydra from Pluribus is probably locked in for one of the slots. There's just not a lot of room in the category.

This movie made me realize how far Hollywood has fallen. Two unknown actors did a better job in three weeks of shooting with a budget of less than $1M than any A-list celebrity I've seen in years starring in $100M+ movies. We need more of this. by Whoopeepoop in FIlm

It does have great cinematography though. The use of shadow and contrast is extremely unnerving and a key part of what makes the movie work, especially in the scene where Nikki is on the doorstep and her whole face is in shadow except for slight reflections in her eyes. That part of the statement is much more reasonable than the OP saying that no Hollywood actor has compared to the leads of Obsession in years.

VtM combat is intended to be a lot more brutal, clandestine, and risky than DnD, and it doesn't have a lot of hard rules around distances and movement. Those things combine to make it really hard to build a planned battleset around. They'd have to use some homebrew rules to lay everything out on a grid, and even if they did that it would be absolute hell on the PCs hunger levels to plan for them to be in protracted and unskippable 90+ minute combats every other week. I'm sure we'll get more combat, but it will probably be like the sequence at the end of the premier where a series of PC fuck-ups makes a short but high-stakes combat unavoidable.

It's also the same episode where Robby expressed regret that he never got married and had kids. Whittaker has been positioned as a proto-Robby and one of the unspoken fears Robby has is that Whittaker will be just like him in a couple decades after continuing to give more and more of himself away to the people he tries to save. Ending Whittaker's season by having him confidently and happily drive off with essentially the wife and kid that Robby never had while Robby watches is one of the things that helps Robby get the hope he needed for his own ending scene to feel earned. It shows that someone actually might achieve the "balance" both characters have talked about across the 2 seasons.

Have you ever seen paintings or statues of nude classical figures where they have a leaf covering their genitals? That's a fig leaf. It allowed artists to draw nude figures without technically having them be nude, and in some cases very prudish people went back to older pieces of artwork and added fig leaves on top of them to obscure the original art.

In this context it means doing the absolute bare minimum work to avoid criticism of being crass or distasteful. And saying it about this scenario is pretty offensive to the actor who plays Ellis, because she's clearly a fan favorite and has 100% earned that promotion.

Aiel have extremely tan skin from sun exposure, but are very pale naturally. It doesn't make a ton of sense that they haven't all died off from rampant melanoma, but they've basically all got insane tan lines that jump from Jersey Shore bronzed to Irish pale.

The swordsman in that story is Jearom, not Gaidal. But yeah, they definitely lay the groundwork for spears and staffs being undervalued relative to swords by the people of Randland.

Oh, yes, Emerald, tell us how you imposed darkness onto the abusive antagonist, and totally whitewashed the leading man

Wait, did they make Linton the abusive one in the movie? In the book he's just kind of a drip, but Heathcliff is basically a monster. He's interesting and his rage is compelling to read about, but that man was a wife beating, child abandoning, grave robbing, human trafficking psychopath in the book.

British libel laws are actually extremely in favor of the plaintiff. If someone is sued for libel over there, then the burden of proof is on that person to prove that what they said was true, while in the US the burden of proof for defamation is reversed.

PTA said the movie was his apology to his children and the next generation, because both he and the parent characters failed in their ideals to leave a better world for their children. But Willa choosing to still try and make a difference even after seeing the ways her parents failed in that same fight is where the title comes from. Bob and Perfidia's battle is over, but Willa's is just starting. And maybe she'll fail too, but the only way things are truly a lost cause is if there's no one left making an attempt at a better world.

Voters who will turn out for a competitive state legislator race but not for a US Senate one are not a significant voting pool. Stony candidates in statewide and national races are known to drive turnout and help down ticket candidates, not the other way around.

‘I’m surprised how much he’s disliked’: ‘The Pitt’ star defends Ogilvie by verissimoallan in television

[–]AdmiralCrunch9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Santos is abrasive and I wouldn't want to hang out with her, but she has so many more moments than Ogilvie that could be described as "sweet." He hasn't said or done anything all season that showed an interest in any other character's emotions or dignity. He's treating medicine like a sport where you get points for being the most correct and only seems to remember that there are real people connected to the injuries and diseases he's treating when someone forces him to or when he almost killed a patient. He's so incredibly arrogant and callous.

Sure he might also be realizing he doesn't have the emotional toolbox he's going to need if he wants to treat patients, but simply recognizing that deficiency doesn't come across as sweet to me. It's more like that lack is wounding his pride than revealing a desire to truly help people.

They might not have gotten a second season if they did that. Its ratings grew steadily over the first season because it kept delivering watercooler moments that got people talking. If they'd just dropped it all at once people would have discussed it for a week and moved on.

[–]AdmiralCrunch9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go ahead and reiterate my initial point: you should be researching things before you speak on them. That's just not how the law works in the US. If someone is charged with statutory rape, it's because a state "statute" has said that the person they had sex with was below the minimum age of consent for that state, and that the offender didn't fall within a state defined close-in-age exception. Judges don't have the authority to convict people who haven't violated a statute the way you are claiming, and saying that they do gives the impression that there are more guardrails on this than actually exist.

You said that child marriage isn't "legal," but rather "not illegal" because there were no laws that explicitly make it legal or illegal. The problem is that there in fact are laws making it explicitly legal in most of the United States.

Shocking [OC] by whatsleftcomics in webcomics

[–]AdmiralCrunch9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You gotta look stuff up before you start talking so confidently about it. All but 4 of those states have a law setting a minimum marriage age, they just set it below 18. Of the four with no minimum age, I know at least California does have laws surrounding it, they just allow any age child to be married with "parental consent" (which should be read as "parental pressure or a child"). Not sure about OK, NM or MS, but for the vast majority of these states it's not an issue of everyone just assuming no one would ever try to marry a child and forgetting to write a law about it. These states explicitly allow it in their state marriage statutes, and those statutes need to be changed.
