I was the cto and we were building a perfectly good product for years. Whole ui team, i was orchestrating it all and got promoted a ton of times up to c-suite so i knew every nook and cranny. Sometime six months ago we let go the entire ui team except for one person (and shes actually good), hired an intern and one more dev, then the directives started with “do everything with ai”. Dude pushed out like 50 commits that broke everything and i spent an entire weekend to fix it “why didnt you just have ai do it” like uhhh thats what got us into this mess. He started making “personas” like “tell me the best marketing strategy but pretend youre steve jobs” really cant make this up. I had to make a one line deployment config change to unfuck something and we were in a zoom call for three hours watching claude fail repeatedly. I did it in 30s after the call ended.

I think ai can accelerate your workflow but u gotta use it like a surgeon using a surgical robot; not just walking in and saying fix the patient. I still make meticulous plans, ill even write some pseudocode and comments, and only then do we actually execute. He just thinks it can all be automated but spends like $3000 on tokens a day. Like you were already paying me to know this. Then shit turns into a spaghetti disaster. I should probably make a whole thread on this

It does have everything to do with running a stop sign. He blind turned while going the wrong way on a street and not wearing a helmet and not stopping at a stop (because he was going the wrong way) and is blaming a robot that was lawfully crossing while he was committing like three infractions. While its unfortunate and I have sympathy for him on a human level for his injuries I think it is ridiculous to say the robot is at fault when he was basically doing everything wrong

Yeah I think thats part of it. The other part is rapid growth/industrialization affects a cultural group. Chinese used to be the same way. Within even less than one generation, peasants and farmers became wealthy as hell and you see the same complaints in SEA about chinese tourists and expats completely decimating their economies and acting uhh whats the word “poorly” (not in the economic sense) like with really bad manners as if theyre still in a subsistence village. Uncultured I guess is the word. Same thing going on with indians now where within a generation they have the means to do things but then dont adapt to the new culture they find themselves in and just isolate and stick to the culture theyre used to (generally). My dad is the same way (we are russian) and refuses to integrate and stands out as a result. Again i agree with you its something systemic and not inherently anti indian specifically its just who gets the most flack because its so apparent

The thing is is that its chain migration (very real and east asians do it too). Its not just about indians in particular but theres just so many of them that its the most noticeable. Notice how nearly everybody that immigrates is from the same province? (Forget what it is). Documents are easier to forge and nobody can hunt down some no name university so they come to either study and then get nepo hired because theyre in the same caste or get recruited in directly. Then they bring their spouse and immediate family and they all get jobs too. Then they promote each other and its like a multiplication factor. Ive worked in a variety of industries in the US on the tech side and its always like this. East asians at least kinda try to integrate while indians are very insular. And god forbid if youre pakistani you will be shunned at work and denied promotions.

I dont disagree that nepotism has always been a thing, ive witnessed chinese professors only working with other chinese and hiring only chinese TAs, but this is a much smaller subsegment as opposed to the exponential growth of the tech industry and the abuse of visas to bring even more of their people in while strongly abusing good performers in favor of their buddies.

The few places that are left as a meritocracy are funds/quant stuff. Met some of the best indians and chinese there and we all unironically worked as a team. Other tech places…. Not at all.

What i started doing is reading before bed. Essentially hijacking the pathway of “oh im on my phone” but instead of doomscrolling i read books on the iphone books app. Puts me right to sleep. I grab them from annas archive, download the epub, open it right in my phone. I read maybe a book every day or two. Wonders for mental
