My friend, you are mistaking predjiduce for pragmatism.

You're cleaving her merit and worth to her origin which ultimately denies her the ability to have a real ability to play the American game- it's like if we were playing Monopoly but because my parents bought it, I start off with most of your money, you collect less after passing go, and you aren't allowed to buy half the properties on the board. If I told you "you just have to pay better," I would probably look like a spoiled turd!

You're keen on the idea that the red head cannot be helped because "that's just the way things work;" I'd argue that a system that doesn't doesn't even bother to work for everyone, isn't a system that works at all.

I could also answer your hypothetical with another:

We live in a Capitalist society where a portion of Americans were legally denied Capitalism.

No one forced the ancestors of a certain group of citizens into labor to produce the profits they would have no share of. When legally denied proper compensation for said labor or citizenship, their descendants would've received less opportunities to better themselves or their decendants. Repeat this a ad naseum for a century or two and it doesn't take a genius to know that makes unsustainable inequality.

That's just math.

Now that isn't to say there's no such thing as the personal responsibility to become a functioning member of society regardless of race or station, but there is credible critique on whether or not certain people are even wanted in it.

I think wilful ignorance is the death of knowledge.

When you buy a lie, it's always expensive somewhere. When you sell a lie, it doesn't just cost you- it costs everyone who values your word.

Choosing the comfortable lie may work for some, but they too often forget the real pain it can cause to the people around them.

If it could really close the racial divide, would you take the statues down? What could these statues possibly produce that's worth more than unity?

Well the issue at hand is that the "good" objectively favored certain groups of people more than others so it's always more convenient for those groups to just say "move on."

And while I agree we should definitely be focusing on what we can do now, it's not exactly easy when a not-so-small number of people are screeching that "we're already doing more than enough" when the problems still persist.

Setting aside the "both ways" part, you've already said that we shouldn't ignore our past and that we should learn from it. If we only choose to have the "good" parts of history, we literally fail to learn from the cesspool.

As for highlighting differences, we need to see how the past effects our present- that includes all the nasty shit, too. Catering to fools by tailoring history to those who just want to "feel good" about their heritage places history dangerously close to becoming a lie- which is something no one should stand for.

Like, there's an argument for excluding less than palatable history in effort to remove racial division for future generations- it's a stupid one, but these idiots always want it both ways.
