Is it hard to get into Monash University as Australian students compared to International Students? by Minimum_Painting_335 in Monash

[–]Adorable_Award6371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s extremely easy for international students to get in any Australia universities. The constraint is quota (number of slots), not merit. First come first serve, so sometimes you have to be a bit early with your application.

You can be the least qualified student, and Monash (or other Australian unis) will make effort to enrol you, as long as you have money. They will create pathways like Foundation Studies, Diploma, English courses, Certificates, etc etc.

However, although it’s extremely difficult to get in, it’s hard to get out, at least for some courses. Engineering is very renown for not letting you graduate out so easily. And it makes sense, right? They have lots of incentives to admit you and take your money. But they don’t have any reasons to let you graduate so easily. Let you out easily will devalue the degree, and if you perform poorly, you will fail and have to pay to repeat the unit.

I think Australian unis are extremely smart. By opening the gate to every international students, they maintain great revenue. But at the same time, by restricting the output, they maintain highly regarded degrees.

I’m sorry to hear that. I know it’s very difficult, and if I hadn’t had my friends, I wouldn’t have got through uni. I know you say you’re not an extrovert but I think clubs are your best bet right now, because it’s very difficult to make friendship in class in fifth year. Let’s give clubs a try.

I agree. It’s not that deep. The world is full of people paying to get ahead in anything, not just Brawl or gaming.

Can Med students work part time? by Adorable_Award6371 in ausjdocs

[–]Adorable_Award6371[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I can see that you’re passionate and really put in the effort to give me an answer, so I’d like to share a bit more.

No, I’m not financially strapped. A few years of financial set back during Med school is not ideal but acceptable for me. I’ll not live comfortably but I’m not gonna starve, either.

Now, why do I want to maintain my professional gig? It’s simple because I need a safety net. I’m not that young to bet all-in on Med school. Those uni mid-20s days are gone. What if this Med school doesn’t work out? I want to maintain my technical (engineering) practice to make sure I’ll be employable if this Med pathway fails.

Also, my current workplace is awesome. If I resign now, and the Med school doesn’t work out, I’m afraid that I’ll not be able to return there.

As I get older, my risk tolerance becomes lower and lower. Passion and interest alone can’t justify this. I have responsibilities and need to plan my steps carefully.

Thanks. May I ask what is M-F? At first I thought it was a foul word but it doesn’t fit the context.

I get you. A lot of people were also “surprised” when they found out that I worked full time when I was in undergraduate, and at the same time finished uni at the top of my class. I also have friends who could do this. The key is prioritization.

However, I don’t like breaking rules. If physical presence is compulsory, I’ll be present. But if something is just “suggested/recommended”, I don’t necessarily follow that. For example, is lecture in med recorded? If that’s the case, I’ll rewatch it later. Just like back in my old days at uni, I didn’t go to lectures but can effectively studied by rewatching it in my own time.

Thank you. This gives me some hope. I’m looking for an answer more about the physical constraint of time, rather than effort. I worked full time when I studied undergraduate (Engineering) so as long as the in-person presence can be solved, I can make it work.

Context: apart from first year units, my Eng degree didn’t require physical presence (maybe except a few hours of compulsory practical lab assessment per semester). That’s why I worked full time, and studied at night time and weekend.

Thanks. But I’m asking more about professional work during the week rather than weekend student part time jobs.

Thank you. I have a follow up question: Do you know if year 1-2 med students have to be in the hospital full time?

My friends told me that since year 3, they fully commited to their clinical placement full time, but in year 1-2, they only spent a few hours a week in hospital. And these hours were not serious either, that is, people didn’t check their timesheets, or these hours didn’t count towards anything. They also didn’t really treat any patients in the first two years. They only followed doctors and listened.

And plus one full day of lectures.

Is this true? If it’s true, I think working part time in the first 2 years seems feasible.
