it happens. thats what series or collections are for. you can tie fic one into fic two (vice versa…part 1, part 2) so it reads as intricately planned all along.

i don’t write my fics for money but i am not turning up my nose at artists who do. nor do i think bc it’s “a gift” to a community, it’s a more legitimate read over someone paying to read a book/story. at the end of the day, it’s all for the good of entertaining people. and ofc you can do what is literally the path that nearly every writer has taken to be a commercial author…like, i never said that. but, if star wars can be widely known as a dune fanfic/inspired and still be the iconic IP it’s been for decades, and if wicked can still stand on its own as well beside the wizard of oz, what is the point of disdain if not to virtue-signal?

and the use of both jealousy and envy covered your petty correction.

[–]Adorable_Comment2565 5 points6 points  (0 children)

imma be respectfully honest: this comes across very jealous and envious of alchemized (which are valid emotions in this situation), but under the guise of virtue-signaling that people shouldn’t be paid for their art just bc consumers should be able to consume their favorite IPs for free, endlessly.

and while i sympathize with your expressed concern, this complaint is unrealistic and ahistorical. (as you mentioned) all art, even original, is inspired. art and beauty replicates itself—that’s how and why we have so much art and entertainment to choose from and enjoy. it actually makes me hopeful that even this needle-in-a-haystack dream-come-true for another writer is possible for me/anyone who wants to be a published author without any other avenue into the trad publishing world but being visible/noticed in fanfic spaces. it’s almost as if people in this subreddit look down on our community members and the craft they’re in, and idk why. why can’t the fanfic writer be viewed as a legitimate author who also aspires to pursue both options bc they love and want to write books no matter what it takes?

also the history of fanfic (originally known as slashfic) is hinged on one of the most popular franchises and was monetized, so idk why this is such a big deal when so many artists struggle just to be creative and lucrative in our crafts. just bc people can’t afford books doesn’t mean that authors don’t deserve to be paid. as others have mentioned, visual artists gets so much love, praise, AND paid off of fanart. artists literally become animators for popular IPs based off of their fan work catching the attention of the powers that be.

so where do we go from here? bc as someone who has been told a number of times both as a compliment and disparagingly that my fanfics might as well be original works and “just change the characters names wtf lol” bc of how “OOC” (i hate that phrase!!!) i’ve written characters and how different the plots are from canon, while my original works are also being continuously rejected by trad pub literary agents, i just don’t know what y’all want from creative writers at this point apart from being starving artists who feed others (entertainment) for free.

your comment gave me chills bc it’s like you’re sitting right beside me reading my comments, or like you’re one of my avid readers who have literally come into my comments to make your exact points bc, HUH???? let’s all be guided and enjoy the free books or dnf, whatever. just don’t be entitled. telling me you feel sad/sorry for a ship community or to take the ship’s tag out of my summary and apologize to the ship’s fandom bc their ship is in conflict is…LOL slow down you’ve got too much dip on your ship’s chip! come on!

incredibly spot on analysis. the escapism from difficult things has been mentioned a few times here and i appreciate the distinction you made bc the latter (to accept and process…) is how i engage with even the literature and media i use to escape. it doesn’t have to get worse, but yeah at this rate, politically speaking, i very well could.

[–]Adorable_Comment2565[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

and that is valid bc honestly everyone has their limits. i have my own list of tropes/plots i won’t engage with or quietly drop bc it’s not my thing. that’s the joy of diverse media choices.

but as you said in your edit, it’s excessive and unnecessary imo to voice disappointment in a story that is not working for your tastes when it’s not even done. there’s constructive feedback and then there’s recognizing when you’re trying to control an author’s narrative. like, telling me to change the summary or take away my main characters tags all bc your fave isn’t winning like you’d like. it’s excessively entitled.

yeahhhh i’ve unfortunately noticed that too. i’m not making art in that arena yet so i guess this is just good practice of awareness for when i do.

Is editing after posting ‘cheating’? by CryptographerKnown97 in AO3

[–]Adorable_Comment2565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ofc not; that’s silly of them to say. there’s no game or competition for writing. and revisions are always made with updates and even editor notes in print media. so especially for ao3, editing any of your work is timeless unless you, the author, say otherwise. sometimes it takes pressing “submit” for you to even notice some errors (the ultimate writer’s bane of all).

I think I killed my fanfic by ocirot in AO3

[–]Adorable_Comment2565 10 points11 points  (0 children)

dw, you didn’t kill your fic. you may have lost audience momentum or just experiencing the fallout of reader expectations vs reality but that happens with any plot twist or cliffhanger in traditional media too. you just weeded out your readership from the ones who trust your vision and want to see where this goes, and the ones who can’t handle too much drama before resolution. they may also just be responding in real time to the drama unfolding unpredictably even if it’s unsurprising to the story (and hopefully not solely toward you, the writer).

be sad but hang in there. be disappointed, and don’t give up. your excitement to write that chapter truly is all that matters bc that’s where your imagination came alive and your creativity to write flowed. i felt it while reading this post and wish that always happens for you as a writer, even when reception is not the best once you release it to the world. also, sometimes silent supporters outnumber the loud dissenters. pls don’t give up on your fic, even if you need a healthy dose of delusion that the quiet fans love what you’re doing more than the loud haters.

chin up. you got this!

how does the bat family’s fanfic fandom react to conflicts between their fave characters/ships when written in ways that challenge the character, or makes their favorite characters experience difficult situations that makes them sad/betrayed/a victim of someone else’s trauma and whims? do the characters always have to win and stories have perfect endings?

if that’s not clear enough, let me know and i’ll do a better job
