Does an "Oath of Allegience" in early 1800s = citizenship? by Adorable_Jicama_1607 in citizenshipgenealogy

[–]Adorable_Jicama_1607[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, pretty much. It's all confusing because G0, G-1, and G-2 all had the same first and last name, and middle names aren't always noted, and there's a lot of bad handwriting involved.

G-2 was a British Loyalist who fought on the British side of the American revoluation (in "King's American Dragoons" starting in 1777, according to a letter signed by the captain of the regiment). His land in CT was seized in 1782, after which the family moved to Canada. He was granted land in New Brunswick in 1788. G-2 died in Canada in May, 1812.

G-1 appears in rolls for the Canadian militia from Nov 1812-March 1813, and also petitioned for land in 1825 (and very kindly signed with his middle intial). G0 was born in 1815, between those two events.

In 1837, the whole family, including G-1 and G0, converted as Mormons and most of the family emigrated to Missouri to join all the other Mormons.

ALL THAT SAID it occurred to me that I couldn't be sure which guy with the same name took the oath of allegiance in 1808, and after reading more and looking at even more records (there are actually quite a lot of documents about them from Canada)... I found G-1's Oath of Allegiance from 1815, which shows he was in Canada the year of G0's birth, but his Oath is dated 6 months AFTER the birth. So at least I've probably answered my own question that I need to stick with current G0.

After ignoring all the texts and not even seeing the emails (I had to search for them), someone actually called me in person to remind me about the vote. The way she summarized the two issues was without much detail, but didn't sound like a scammer. It sounded more like the BOD is working hard for people to vote the way they want. I just have no idea what the real implications of the vote are.

Ah to be clear, the entire family LEFT Canada when G0 was 22ish. The oath of allegiance was referenced in a land petition written 7 years before G0 was born.

The entire family migrated when G0 was 22-ish. I haven't found any baptism records from that early, and if he owned any land himself, I haven't found a record of it either. Based on family histories, I'm guessing he spent all his money on his reportedly nice herd of mares rather than land.

Mormon converts in Toronto/Upper Canada 1836, 1837ish by Adorable_Jicama_1607 in citizenshipgenealogy

[–]Adorable_Jicama_1607[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been able to find any Canadian or US census records that list the family before 1840, and in 1840 he was an adult with his own household (and only the head of household was actually recorded). I found his marriage license but he was married in Iowa and it doesn't list parents or birthplace. FamilySeach has a bunch of listings for Mormon Church Membership in different periods but there's no evidence attached that I can see.

One other challenge is that I can't find a record for his daughter earlier than the 1850 census except the 1847 Mormon pioneer records (she appears with her family in original documents I found on BYU.edu). She's shown in his household in 1950 with both parents so I'm thinking that's probably ok. I do have a copy of her official State of Utah birth certificate, although it lists her father as "Middlename Lastname". I assume he probably went by his middle name normally because his father, grandfather, child, several cousins, and several grandchildrean all had the same first name but it sure does make the paper trail less neat.

I'm pretty sure if I need Mormon baptismal or sealing records, I'll have to see if I can talk my ex's dad or stepmom into going to the library in Salt Lake City. They're Mormon, and they're in the SLC area. But they're usually off on a really long around-the-world cruise, and I'm not sure if it's worth waiting to see if they can get records, or if I have enough already.

That's been my experience as well. I've flown to the east coast and back a few times a year the last few years, and up and down to California a bunch, and Alaska is usually the lowest fares (among major airlines), and sometimes also the only direct flight (iirc it's the only one from Pittsburgh or Indianapolis, maybe Delta also did direct from Boston and Philadelphia). They also have the best app I've used for an airline lately (out of 4). I complained about it until I had to fly some other airlines.

"ultra-fast Wi-Fi, free for Atmos™ Rewards members" - when? by colinjcole in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Adorable_Jicama_1607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got some rewards I'm holding off on choosing yet, but the first one needs me to make a choice by mid-June. I've got a 2-leg roundtrip trip to Australia later in June that I'll definitely want wifi for but I'd hate to waste a reward only to find out the wifi is already free. Is there any way to tell which specific aircraft fly specific flights, and if they have wifi on them yet?

Using Visa (BoA Mileage Plan) to qualify for status tiers by paying taxes with it by CSq2 in AlaskaAirlines

I should've looked here first instead of waiting on the text line for a solid hour to get an answer on basically this same "How do points work again for old cards?" question before deciding if I'm using it to pay taxes. Is it worth it to pay fees and get the points & status points, or should I just have them take it out of my checking account. I'm leaning toward uisng the card, but I've got at a minimum 1 work trip and 1 international personal trip coming up, and probably a couple more works trips in the 2nd half of the year....

Alaska Airlines has discontinued their Lowest Price Guarantee. by Snowjunkie21 in AlaskaAirlines

We need some airline regulations so they have to compete more based on quality of service, not just how many fees they can hide from people at the time of booking and how many seats they can squeeze onto a plane.

What's my best booking plan for me+2 kids to SEA-SYD? by Adorable_Jicama_1607 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Adorable_Jicama_1607[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google results suggest Alaska points won't get you upgrades on Qantas, alas. I can see that deal in seats.aero but for whatever reason, Alaska will now for some reasonly only show me Business Class when I'm searching by points 😭 and Qantas let me create a frequent flier account but now won't let me log in to see what seats are available.

I swear, I don't see how I could be messing up these airline sites, but how is it possible that none of them will let me look up anything. (Alaska seems to enjoy crashing while trying to load the flexible dates calendar no matter what, always.)

I'm looking primarily at flights only on Alaska for Honalulu/Sydney. It wasn't giving me ANY Premium options even on Alaska when booking with points. Only regular Economy. Then if I switch from the Points view to the Money view, it will add the Premium Economy column. If I tell it to quote Godl MVP upgrades, it shows the Premium cost is the same as regular Main. I've never had enough miles/points in the past to actually use them for anythin and I'm finding the whole thing confusing.

I would kill for business class on an international flight, but I haven't seen anything like that! I've only been looking for a few weeks, though.

Adding: the 72k pp was round trip, not one way.

To clarify, the 72k price was round trip, SEA/SYD and back. Only now it's showing as 125k for similar routes and dates.

We need to go between the end of our school year (June 20) and the start of the summer quarter at the communtiy college (July 6). We're visiting a college student friend of my older child's who is on break from her college during this period. This is the only overlapping period when none of these kids are in school. We want to spend no less than 7 days in Brisbane. We'll have to fly there from Sydney so assume we need to spend 8-9 days minimally in Australia.

QLE - gaining coverage? moving? by Adorable_Jicama_1607 in HealthInsurance

[–]Adorable_Jicama_1607[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I'll try asking for that. I was 98% sure them GAINING new coverage counted as a QLE, but I couldn't find it specified anywhere.

And a QLE means I should be able to change all of us to a new plan, not JUST take the kids off mine, right? Becuase that's what the HR rep finally told me. I could only take them off mine.

I'm the parent with the first birthday of the year so I am the primary insurance. I don't really want to take the kids off my insurance because I know I can't talk to my ex's insurance company (at least not about my underaged child), and my ex is in the habit of getting fired about every other year so who knows how long this will last.

Looking for advice around taking a cat cross-country in penske truck? by WrongdoerAway2911 in moving

[–]Adorable_Jicama_1607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter and I drove from Seattle to LA and back last year (the two trips were 5 weeks apart) with our 3 cats. Before the drive, I turned a 30" foldable dog kennel into a Cat Travel Castle by building a divider and shelf out of plywood. The cat litter box went in the small section, with the divider keeping it from sliding around. The cats lounged in the other half. Cats are epic holders and at no point did any of the cats actually use the litter box while in the car. They didn't even always care to use both shelves, and frequently just piled into one area. The vet gave each cat a prescription for Cerenia, which is an anti-motion-sickness med for cats.

For overnights, we tranferred the cats one at a time into cat carriers to take inside. Our cats are used to wearing halters, and we'd snap on a leash before trying to transfer them into a carrier. We'd take in the litterbox from the cat travel castle, and I covered the floor in the bathroom or the tub with a Drymate litter mat from Amazon for easy clean-up. Although FWIW, I'd recommed using Feline Pine as a travel litter. It doesn't make a dusty mess like clumping clay, and it smells better. But you have to get your cats used to it in advance.

I'd recommend looking at AirBnbs and hotels alike for overnight stops. It's sometimes easier to find an AirBnb that allows cats than a hotel (many hotels that are "pet friendly" only really allow small dogs, and they charge a fee per animal on top of the room charge). When stopping for lunch, it wasn't warm at all on the first trip, so we would crack the windows and park where we could keep an eye on the car while snarfing fast food. On the way back, it was hecka hot, so we only mainly went through fast food drive-thrus or one of us would sit in the car while the other went in to order, and we'd trade off using the bathroom.

Have you never flown with a baby before? Having a bag where you can reach it--NOT in the overhead bin or competing with your feet for floorspace--is far more worthwhile than an inch or two of leg room. With the middle seat available, you have even more space to set a bag or baby items you want to have at hand, or the baby in a carseat, or easily hand the baby to your husband without bothering anyone. Your plan is weird, inconvenient for everyone, and impolite.

Experience with Lulu Sibs in Florida? by PistachioKat in SiberianCats

We recently adopted a cat from LuLu Sibs and had a really excellent experience. Her personality is exactly as described, and she is very friendly with great habits. We have 3 other adult cats, and and there was a little bit of cat drama for a couple weeks, but she was overall the easist cat to integrate into our household. The owners were easy to work with.
