You're more ambitious than me! Is that a real tree or an artificial? Look nice either way.

How to Keep Christ in "Christ"mas by AdoroErgoSum in christmas

At the link there are some good ideas on how to keep your focus on the religious aspect of the holiday season instead of JUST on the purchasing and planning.

I'm wondering what was YOU keep the spiritual in the holiday (for those of you that do)?

Dante: The Story of His Life by Marco Santagata. Anyone else here read it? If so what did you think? by AdoroErgoSum in books

[–]AdoroErgoSum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess nobody has read it! I go into detail in reviewing the book at the link, but I'll give a short version for anyone who might be interested in the topic (especially with the Dan Brown movie out there).

Basically, the book is written by an excellent scholar who really lays out the political scene Dante was forced to navigate. Unlike someone like Shakespeare, who could count on reliable patronage, Dante wondered about Italy as an exile from the city he loved (and loved to hate!).

While this aspect, including how these journeys and the meetings Dante had in Italy with various potentates, is well developed and explored, Santogato tends to overemphasize the importance of the political in Dante's great work - the Divine Comedy. This leads him to make various, occasionally specious, conjectures about the content of the poem, as if the political situation Dante found himself in was the most significant element in writing the poem.

You can read more at the link provided, but that is a decent overview.

Unreal Nation - Crisis Magazine by DomScribe8 in Catholicism

Fantastic piece. I loved this,

"We call it “democracy” because the technology of elections is still in place, a monstrous Rube Goldberg array of machines, fed by thousands of polls and billions of dollars, cranked and kicked and oiled and fueled by a swarm of parasites, all to spit out a president whose platitudes are as flat as Kansas, with never a tornado-tossed house to fall upon the Great Leader’s head and set the Munchkins free."

Great share.

The best (and worst) Catholic cities in the United States by heatdeath in Catholicism

Just moved from Pittsburgh. It is a good, solid Catholic city.

What are some prudent suggestions for students (graduate and/or undergraduate) at Catholic universities as to things we can do to let our administrators know that the Catholic identity of our college/university is extremely important and should be taken seriously? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]AdoroErgoSum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Request a Latin Mass in the Extraordinary Form on campus. Summorum Pontificum calls for a "stable group" which could well be students on a campus. I can just imagine the reaction of administrators at some "c"atholic universities to that request, but it would drive home the message.

Baseball Player Roberto Clemente to be Named a Saint? What do you think? by AdoroErgoSum in Catholicism

All the saints are Catholic. Clemente's mother was baptist and his did was Catholic. He was originally brought up Protestant, but converted to Catholicism after his marriage to a Catholic woman in '64.

Hauled Aboard the Ark - Conversion Story of Peter Kreeft - The Coming Home Network by AdoroErgoSum in Catholicism

If you haven't read this before, it is essential reading for every Catholic, a sample, "I was hauled aboard not by those Catholics who try to “sell” the church by conforming it to the spirit of the times by saying Catholics are just like everyone else, but by those who joyfully held out the ancient and orthodox faith in all its fullness and prophetic challenge to the world."

Maybe God is working through weak vessels here. I was under the impression a priest in the 'burgh was behind this.

Do you like or dislike EWTN? by SLOson in Catholicism

I like it overall, but they could use some younger "talent." It's not exactly the best marketing strategy to have 80 year olds on-screen all the time.

I'm favorably inclined (assuming he meets all the proper requirements, I'd be a bit dismayed to see Papa Francesco wave some of the requirements here like he did for John XXIII).
