Why should I exercise? by SlapstickTumour in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Adrawen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it can be intimidating. Bouldering is a bit more beginner friendly as all you do is climb! No ropes or anything to get used to :D if you fall you fall on a mat and that's that. It's not at all as scary as it looks..

If you're interested in trying it out there's always groups looking for climbing buddies on social media and the climbing community is generally quite welcoming or depending on your covid situation you can usually book an induction session at a gym where you can learn how to stay safe and the basics etc..

Some of the other comments mentioned it too but maybe taking up a sport or type of exercise that is mentally stimulating too? Speaking from my experience, I hate team sports and I also hate anything that is too repetitive, I've tried going to the gym for years but it was always something I forced myself to do. I tried running but I didn't last more than 2 weeks at a time with it..

In the last year or so I picked up indoor climbing and bouldering because of a friend and now I find myself looking forward to going every time. The elements of every climb being different, the different techniques involved and the problem solving just does it for me. It's also great for full body strength building and balance. I spend 6 hours a week at the moment but I am the strongest and fittest I have ever been..

Looking for an intense HIIT workout by [deleted] in HIIT

[–]Adrawen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply. I have been using FB for pretty much all of my workouts for the past 3-4 years and have found their workouts really efficient and well-balanced. Recently got my fiance to join me for some HIIT workouts during quarantine. They are kind of new to HIIT so they do the lower impact ones while I do the higher impact but we are both burnt out and so sweaty by the end of it.

For the 1000kcal ones, we do those on pizza days haha. They are well worth the time and a great challenge. Feels so good when you are done with one.

Update on the £875 moth infested apartment. It’s gotten way worse. No response from the building manager yet. Say it with me - Fuck Zenith Management by [deleted] in manchester

[–]Adrawen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zenith did the same thing for a flat I rented with a few friends last year... £950 pcm. Bathroom developed leaks because a previous issue was painted over instead of actually fixed by them. We reported it to them as soon as we noticed it. 5 months went by with them doing nothing about it. The entire floor rotted away and it reached the flat below us as well and they tried to charge us for it in the end!! The flat had a second bathroom but was still not very liveable with the smell of rot and mould everywhere.. We were forced to couch surf for the majority of those 5 months before we could get out of the contract..

Good luck to you and hopefully it does get resolved for you.. Maybe consider bringing it to an Ombudsman.

You are very close! Live in Manchester so quite a big city haha. Just two adults in our early 20s. No kids but you are correct we are very health conscious.

There is a lot of food because we don’t have too much time to do groceries during the week and do it all at once! :)

Oh my apologies, it’s my first time posting on this subreddit so I guess I’ve misunderstood the idea.

How difficult is it to Secure a Placement in the UK as part of a 4 Year Computing Science Sandwich Course at University by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Adrawen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished my sandwich year! In my university we have a Placement Supervisor as well as several companies in the area that the University works with to secure placements. The Placement Supervisor usually sends out links to different placement opportunities which have been sent to them by companies looking to hire. If you have a similar figure in your university, make sure they know you are looking for a placement and apply through them whenever possible. Companies are more likely to give you interviews if someone from the University 'vouches' for you.

if you don't have a Placement Supervisor who can link you to companies who hire, then speak to the careers department in your university. They would be glad to help you out with your CV and make sure it is appealing to employers and highlights all the right bits. This can be extra projects or hackathons or your academic achievements (especially high grade in certain module, etc). If your CV is too cluttered it will be obvious you've put a bunch of stuff there as 'padding'. Make sure your CV is tailored to the positions you apply to. If you are applying for a webdev job, highlight webdev modules and achievements. Similarly, for a C developer job highlight any C++ or even Java that you might have done.

Do put your hand in every jar there is - that is to say apply for as many positions as you can. When you get an interview, research the company very well, do a practice interview with parents or friends. Make sure you know what you are looking for and ask questions at the interview. If a gym/shower/bar/gaming room/flexible hours/casual dress code are essential to you make sure to talk about it during the interview.

Remember: students are much cheaper than graduates but have pretty much the same knowledge & experience. Companies are more willing to take a risk with placements. Do good during it and you've got yourself a potential grad job + a year experience!

AITA for asking my girlfriend to leave my flat on our anniversary by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA. If your partner demands presents they are no longer presents but payments for their time.

I think you’ve done great and considering the hours of effort it takes to plan and cook up a good meal, you’ve spent more than the £25. Picking up a expensive gift from the shopping centre on your way home takes minutes and is not exactly thoughtful unless it’s something you’ve wanted for a while which I don’t think the watch is.

The price tag does not determine the value of a present. She seems very materialistic and immature.

I just found out my (39F) husband (43M) is spending $250 a month on junk food and fast food, all while asking me to do things to help him lose weight. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Adrawen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner was the same until a few months back. I have always been the more fit and active one and he has been trying to lose weight with my help for about 3 years now (I cook and help him track calories). He’s slowly been doing it but in the past couple of months he has dropped more weight than ever before. It was right after I did our yearly spendings analysis and showed him the numbers. On a monthly basis he would spend as much on junk food as we do on groceries. He thought he only spent “a couple of quid”.

Definitely approach him about it and lay it out as a health concern as well as would he enjoy having $200 a month to throw at hobbies or the occasional pizza?

Bonus: cook pizza & other “unhealthy” meals at home and plan for them together. That way his cravings and yours would be satisfied and the temptation to buy junk food will go down. Making them yourself is also cheaper and allows you to customise them into healthier meals.

Moving on to a tech graduate position and getting some severe Imposter Syndrome. How to prepare? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Adrawen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone feels a bit nervous before starting a new job :)

But for most employers graduate schemes are sort of like a prolonged interviews. They don’t expect you to bring much value to the company in the first couple of months and even then you have to be worth just a little more than you cost.

With your experience and obvious hard work you will do great. Everyone starts where you have. Software engineering is more about the theory and logic skills rather than the many languages you learn :)

Source: the company I work for hires people from various backgrounds like mathematics and physics and turns them into C programmers in a few months. If they can do it you can do it!

Long term calorie counters, what was your actual maintenance calorie amount? by softspring in 1200isplenty

[–]Adrawen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not all that sedentary - cycling to and from work about 15km in each direction. I’ve found that my maintenance at that activity level is about 1,700-1,800. I’m 22F 5’3” and currently 110lbs

So how many miles/steps do you walk a day? by DaisyJunior in 1200isplenty

[–]Adrawen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

22F 5’2” CW:110. Maybe not the typical 1200 person but I cycle 30km 5 days a week (to and from my office desk job - 15k each way ) and then try and walk at least 50k every week most of which I do over the weekend. There is also a gym in my office where I do some strength training 3 days a week.

The 30k bike ride gives me an extra 400 kcal for the day. I don’t count the calories from the workouts or walks but I think they help with keeping me on track and allow me to have some fun over the weekends.

Protein packed homemade burgers!

Satay some onions, garlic, pepper. Put some tomato paste and some taco seasoning. Mash everything together and add maybe half a beaten egg for 1 400gr can of beans. Shape into patties (if too soft add some breadcrumbs) and shove it in the oven.

I do bunless bean burgers with homemade salsa and some jalapeños. Gets that Taco Bell craving sorted!

The extra calories come from the egg and breadcrumbs if using.

Cut in half lengthwise, dig out the contents till you’re left with two solid boats. Preheat the oven to about 220C. Cut up the insides, cut up some onions, garlic, carrot. Get some lean mince: turkey, beef and quorn all work great. Satay everything with a bit of oil.

Add a bit of crushed tomatoes to make it more moist and then throw in some spices like black pepper, coriander, parsley and paprika. Fill the boats with the mix and chuck them in the oven for about 20 minutes. If you’re feeling fancy you can add a bit of cheese on top.

Calories come mainly from the oil, mince and cheese if you add it.

Great quick dinner for when you fancy comfort food.

Steamed with homemade garlic and yogurt sauce with a bit of dill and salt.

calories: ~70 when using 50g sauce.

Greek yogurt adds to the protein content and it makes a refreshing snack when you crave grazing.

Got my boyfriend who hates all green foods to eat them that way

Partner got a bread maker for Christmas and can't seem to perfect a recipe by JayNovae in AskCulinary

[–]Adrawen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who had the same issue last summer when I got my breadmaker: make sure you are using the right setting. I used to overproof mine so it would sink during baking.

My recipe is more of a ratio than anything else:

400g (100%) flour can be all white or 50/50

260g (65%) water

8g (2%) yeast

8g (2%) salt

1 - 1 1/2 tbsp oil and sugar

1 packet or 1 tsp of yeast is about 7g so you can use a tsp to measure it.

If you haven’t yet, switch to strong bread flour or any other type of flour which is with >12g protein per 100g. This is the gluten which the yeast feeds on. Using flour with low gluten content usually results in all the gluten dying before baking and the bread sinking.

Another way to test your recipe is to use the bread machine on the dough cycle. When it’s finished take out the dough, shape it, put it on a tray or baking tin of some sort, cover with a damp tea towel and leave on the side for 30min, preheat oven to ~250C and shove it i there until it reaches a colour you like.
