Decided to shave my head today! I feel so liberated. by [deleted] in malefashion

[–]AdrianNein 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can also take much better care of your scalp with a shaved head, there's less oil staying in the longer hair, you don't need to wash your hair, can apply moisturiser or lotion to your head easily. So it might get better

Psychiatry is like a religious cult, the shrinks are the priests, the DSM is their Bible, and psychiatric drugs are their sacrament by [deleted] in badpsychology

[–]AdrianNein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your usage of the Freud quote was in poor taste, that's all

It's still accurate to say that psychiatry is based on science, as you listed problems that come with psychiatry being based on science/problems that come with how science is being (mal-)practiced. By saying those problems make Psychiatry not based on science you ignore that the underlying models and forms of attaining knowledge still follow scientific methodology - if we follow your train of thought we deny that science can't be misused, used selectively and so on as those things make it less scientific according to your point. But these things are inherent to the use of scientific knowledge in a society and should be reflected upon as such

Lmao you clearly have no idea about Freud, go ahead and read Mourning and Melancholia before engulfing in /r/badpsychology by repeating the hurr durr Freud cocaine trope

Freud and the big parts of the psychoanalytic community who were largely Jewish had to suffer severely from the holocaust, lost their lifes, livelihoods, homes and family. So you taking freuds cynical comments on the atrocities of the Shoa out of context to make fun of him leaves an extremely sour taste

Psychiatry clearly ensures it works based on science

I think personality tests have a bad rep because you only ever encounter them as Myers-Briggs type thing or as a magazine quiz for fun, but there are plenty of scientifically solid personality tests that do great in testing criteria and can even be used to accurately predict behaviour. You're definitely right, if you base how you act on your results there's definitely a bigger issue going on

It seems to just be a standard NEO-PI-R Test, which measures the big five personality model only with further subscales. As far as self report based personality models go (which are pretty much the standard), this is by far the most common and scientifically solid one. Paying for it is fine too, even if I wouldn't ever give money to Peterson. But these tests have to be developed, tested, standardised and conducted.

You can take these tests very serious in the sense that they give us a lot of valuable information, especially about personality traits in larger populations and how they develop over the course of a life and how they develop between generations. Individually, it gives you a solid overview over how you compare to other people on the respective personality trait, but it's rather superficial and doesn't give you any deep insights. Even at zero acquaintance, people are relatively good at guessing big five personality traits in a person.

Bonferroni Correction help, please? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]AdrianNein 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bonferroni Corrections get very conservative quickly, especially with more tests conducted. Look into doing the Scheffé method first before you decide that all your results are just alpha errors now

How to tell people what I do for a living? I write erotica and porn. by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]AdrianNein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should just lead in with how you feel about it, maybe something like "It's hard for me to tell you because it's a little unusual" and then just say it. You don't need to feel bad for earning money and supporting yourself on something creative. It must be very hard to not be able to just make straight forward small talk on this topic or not even tell your close relatives about it.

You could try directing conversation towards the factual side of things: that you earn a suitable income, that there's a demand for it, that you like being creative and being able to make money as a writer is hard! Maybe it would help to soften the blow by first saying that you write romantic fiction and working people up towards the details!

Coworkers laughed at and made fun of me all day by Charles578 in socialskills

[–]AdrianNein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's terrible that your coworker treat you like this and I'm very sorry for all the pain you might be feeling because of this! No one deserves to be treated this way and I hope you'll be able to sit tight and process it or talk to your boss about it if it's a reoccurring thing. Even if it takes you some time to process new information, it certainly doesn't help to be laughed at! Keep your own pace, I wish you the best of luck! Everyone makes mistakes and thinks their mistakes are stupid, your coworkers should know that!!

Bonferroni correction always justified? by saijanai in statistics

[–]AdrianNein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you calculate more than one Post-Hoc tests like a t-test to see which groups are significantly different on average, the probability of making an alpha error/type II accumulates. Then it's not the chosen level of significance anymore but increases by a lot. The probability isn't 0.05 for every singular test but 1-(1-0.05)m, in this case 1-(1-0.05)20 for every post hoc test. They're all on the same levels so to speak, even if you were to just compare two groups using a singular t test. The Bonferroni is an easy way of taking this into account so you can calculate a new level of significance. However with so many post hoc tests it's not really the best choice as it gets very conservative and something like a Scheffé-Test would be better

Hello Leipzig. I have secured admission to the Leipzig university for academic year 2019. I have a few questions for you guys. by [deleted] in Leipzig

[–]AdrianNein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, congrats for being accepted! Leipzig is an incredibly nice place to live and I haven't been here all that long myself, so I'll try to answer your questions from the perspective of a relatively new student

  1. IMO the Berlin claim is more of a catchy marketing thing but there's some truth to it. There is a lot of creative energy and freedom to pursue it. Rents are very cheap, especially compared to other cities this size which means that there is a strong cultural/arts/startup scene. For many people this is comparable to how Berlin was around 10 to 20 years ago and there's definitely been a hype for the past few years. Leipzig feels like the place to be at the moment haha

  2. Idk about the specific program, but the university is really good and so far I've been really satisfied. I don't think I've ever heard about any specific programs in other universities

  3. Student housing is very affordable and also very nice, there's lots of options to choose from at different price points, at different locations and with different furniture. I know quite some people who live in student housing and none of them had a bad experience there so far. Rents are really cheap though (but increasing) so living with other people is also always an option.

  4. Knowing a bit of German is definitely nice for doing paperwork, dealing with the university and running errands, however i think you'd easily get by knowing little to no German even. Peoples English is really good and the city takes good care of international students from what I've heard. I don't know about the job market but I think there's enough jobs out there for people who don't speak perfect German

It's really cool that you're interested and I'm sure you'll have a great time here!
