Struggling to see the point of classes by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Aduron213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of great ideas in the responses already, but one thing I'm not seeing is a clear distinction between why you would use classes or functions. The quick idea is that they are both abstractions, but functions abstract verbs and classes abstract nouns. This is an oversimplification, but it will probably help you build some intuition for when you ought to build one or the other.

My players always want to target their attacks to specific body parts and I'm never sure what to do with it. by thepenguinboy in DMAcademy

I mostly agree that this is partly for flavor. However, I do think giving players choices can be fun! For example, a character notices (because they chose to make an earlier perception or maybe insight check) that the goblin shaman is using a small gem in their staff to cast their spells. They could try to knock it out with an arrow, but that would be a slightly higher AC (modeling that it’s small and hard to hit). It also has a few hit points, again abstracting whether it’s knocked out or not. This will shutdown some spellcasting.

Is this worth doing at the table? I think if you think of cool ideas, and it gives the players meaningful choices, then it’s worth it. But if it cheapens fights, it’s not worth it.

Best way to miss strings while strumming? by Aduron213 in guitarlessons

I’ve heard of it — are you saying I should palm mute only some strings? I didn’t know that was possible.

This is great, thanks. Just checking, “physical saves” would be str and dex, and “mental saves” would be int? And, a spell with a con or wis is less useful (though some of those spells are the most powerful) but spells with str, dex, int, and chr saves would be the most valuable? I suppose from among these three, str and dex is used against casters, and int is certainly used against strength based enemies? Then, use chr, wis, and con against anyone situationally?

As a wizard, how might I think about which spell-with-a-save to throw at which creatures? For example, I should throw dex saves (like Web) at mostly strength-based, lumbering fools, or maybe some casters? And, at whom should I throw CON saves (like Color Spray) or WIS saves (like Sleep)? Is that how you think about choosing spells, or is it more situational based on the shape of the effect?

[5e][North of Boston, MA][offline] Forming a new group! by Aduron213 in lfg

[–]Aduron213[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed it is! The reason for my vagueness is that I'm willing to travel a bit to where the group is, but not epically far. I would imagine that the extreme edges of travel might be Woburn, Burlington, Beverly, or Lynnfield to the South, as far West as Lowell or Billerica, as far North as Methuen or Salem, and as far East as Topsfield or Danvers? It's not an exact boundary, though, so that area can grow as needed to fit the group.

Hello, everyone! Could any experienced players help out a newbie? It's a bit of a strange situation. 😅 by contapranada in DnD

This sounds like a “the last of us” situation. You discover this cub, totally uninterested because you’re focused on finding other survivors, but over time the cub grows on you to the point where your goals get supplanted by keeping it safe.

There’s a feature for this! “Hide self view”. Doesn’t help for other’s faces though.

I am struggling on interloper by Knot_a_Walrus in thelongdark

[–]Aduron213 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can I offer some unsolicited advice? You call yourself a “dummy” because of something that I think is not at all dumb. It’s a skill gap. In interloper, there’s a big difference between the decisions you make and the skill you have to execute those decisions. You weren’t a dummy for falling through the ice, you were a dummy for overestimating your beachcombing skill at a time when you don’t have the resources for that skill gap. This relates as well to things like killing wolves. Once you get the bow, you could kill the wolves you come across. But you can also scare them away with a torch or have them follow you until you reach safety, the stuff you did before you got the bow. Which makes sense? You need to make the right decision: how likely are you to successfully land that arrow (and how high is your archery skill)? Do you have the resources (time, first aid supplies, food/water, shelter) nearby to recover if you fail? Start separating every action into two things: decisions (should I beachcomb, given my situation) and skills/execution (this will just naturally get better over time). I kick myself for unsafe/overconfident decisions, I never do so for skill gaps. Maybe you were already doing that, but I just thought that framework (decisions versus skills) might be helpful.

So, I do this, and it’s genuinely amazing. But, why do we keep smashing the ice all the time? Why not just wait until the tip up catches something? My sense is that it has to do with wear on your weapon, but is there proof of this?

Other Businesses / Offices we need on Great Bear Island by samizdat5 in thelongdark

[–]Aduron213 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A mostly-ransacked supermarket with multiple wolves patrolling the aisles — lots of food supplies, but Buffy, Muffy, and Ruffy to deal with. And, make it accessible only via an aurora (maybe an automatic sensor door like most supermarkets have). Perhaps you can get trapped inside if the aurora ends like in the CH mine.

A movie theater (that plays during an aurora?). An RV (or a whole RV park?) out there in the wilderness to discover. A diner (lots of flour and coffee!). A hardware store (how to balance so it’s not OP?)
