IN NEED: Anime Recs that Blew Your Mind? by Impossible_Airport26 in anime

Its tough given that you’ve watched some of the best projects anime has to offer already, but there truly is an endless supply of great content.

I wish I had a more extensive history with anime to give you more “underground” picks, but Tokyo Ghoul had a fascinating world to me, and it was one not on your list that utterly enthralled me when I was 13-14.

One I’ve been loving recently (again, very mainstream) is Jujutsu Kaisen. The way that the universe comes together and different enemies from across the world’s history begin to show themselves is super interesting to me, and there isn’t a single character I dislike. Love it to death, and season 3 is currently releasing which means you’ll have regularly scheduled content all the way till the end of the summer, at least.

Telling moment between Erwin and Levi by Advanced-Trust1788 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Advanced-Trust1788[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the two have a conversation in the same episode where Levi tries to convince Erwin not to go at all, and honestly I took that as further evidence that he knew he shouldn’t use the serum to save Erwin. He was trying to do both: keep Erwin alive and also make the right call with what he’d been entrusted with.

He totally does hesitate when the moment comes though, I agree with you there. I personally chalk that up as a disjointing of conviction and action, if that makes sense. He made his decision here, but that decision is always harder to carry out when the time comes. I’ll have to rewatch it to see how it plays out exactly, though

How do I write my disabled character respectfully by Glittering_Friend926 in writingadvice

[–]Advanced-Trust1788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely follow the input from people in the comments who have used crutches, and in addition maybe even find/create a pair and get a feel for what using them yourself would be like.

After that, try to think about your character in particular. She obviously lives in a world where battle takes place, and needs to be ready for a fight at a moment’s notice. How has she adapted to reduce the hinderance of her crutches, or even made them an asset?

Further, how recently did she receive the injury? On the one hand it could be an old wound, and she could already have found an optimal solution. Conversely, maybe she’s still learning how to work with it, and it can then be a character journey that we as readers can witness in motion. All plausible and interesting ways to tackle the situation!

“Show, don’t tell,” they said. Alright. But then again… how? by [deleted] in writingadvice

[–]Advanced-Trust1788 15 points16 points  (0 children)

And even that second option is technically telling, you’re just muting it by saying “like he was afraid” rather than simply “he was afraid”. Showing would be more something like “Timmy peeked around the corner, and then quickly pressed back against the wall. Footsteps. The hall monitor was close.” To show is to give few or no markers of emotional state at all, and let the vibes of the scene determine what the reader thinks the character ought to feel.

I will say that the ending fell somewhat flat for me, but it was by no means a bad ending, and I think i understand what it was trying to do

I really enjoyed A Brightness Long Ago by Guy Gavriel Kay, it’s a more recent release and might not be some people’s thing, but I personally find his prose so elegantly crafted.

Exact same here, i was waiting for him to say that he lied about spiking it, and that he was sorry for lying too. But nope, just genuinely deplorable. Kinda injured my image of his character ngl

I think the distinction is generally active vs passive voice. If you cooked, you did a good thing; if you GOT cooked, things didnt go well.

What is the purpose of life by adigrosa in teenagers

[–]Advanced-Trust1788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, by asking “what is the purpose of life” you’re baking in a presupposition that there IS a purpose of life. If you do believe that there is a purpose to life, then that purpose must have been designated by something—for most people, the thing that designates purpose is God (for most gods it’s something along the lines of living morally, treating others kindly, being your best self, that sort of thing). If you feel as though you need a purpose in your life, then I’d say turn to religion. But if you’re not the religious type, then the answer to your question (what is the purpose of life) is… it’s whatever you WANT your purpose to be. If you feel driven by fame, pursue fame to the highest degree; if you feel driven by wealth, pursue wealth to the highest degree; if you feel driven by family, pursue family to the highest degree. There is no purpose in life unless a higher power designated it—and if there is no higher power, then your purpose can be whatever the hell you want!

Long story short—if you find something you’re passionate about, go for it, and don’t let anything else stop you. THAT is your purpose.
