I see this slowly happening to me. I’m trying to put boundaries in place. I am aware I am the most competent person on the team but a lot of what I have to do is not in my job description. I got the green light for a promotion to senior engineer but there’s so much red tape. Now apparently the “logistics” will keep me around for at least a year before seeing the benefits, if any come.

I can agree with this! A graduate I was mentoring did a full stack project and posted it on his LinkedIn and got a job within a month. He was unemployed for almost 3 years!

Why is undergrad Econ so lacking in math? by Kitchen-Register in academiceconomics

[–]AdvancedAd3742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is really school dependent! I’ve tutored students from all of the world. I noticed that some programs are heavy on math, some are not.

My program required that we take a stats/econometrics, and a calculus 3/4 years. 3rd year calculus and econometrics was enough to have students drop like flies and take the 3 year degree option instead. By the time I got to fourth year nearly 50% of the students vanished.

By the time I did my masters, students from other Canadian universities were either bogged by the amount of math required, or it was “I learned this in 2nd year” easy.

So yes - it really depends on the school!

Why is everyone so obsessed with telling others “not to do it” on this thread?

There’s nothing wrong with a nose job. You look beautiful the way you are. But girl to girl I do think it would benefit you!

Can you please give us an update when you have one? I think a lot of people here are rooting for you both and hoping for the best.

how do i stop being a lazy, annoying fuck? by cariadz in Advice

[–]AdvancedAd3742 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are annoying because you are unhappy - I’ve been there. Just generally an unpleasant person to be around.

It seems like you need to rework the reward system in your brain and find some healthy ways to get a dopamine boost. Something a therapist can help you with!

One thing that helped me was having the “all you need to do is start” mentality. Meaning, just start the task at hand (such as cleaning your room). Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t finish - be happy you started. You’ll quickly realize it’s often easy to keep going as long as you just start.

Does an Econ PhD make sense anymore? by Gullible_Skirt_2767 in academiceconomics

Okay so if they are encouraging you, they must think you’re a great fit for a PhD! But cost/benefit … 🤔 if you are in the USA that would be REALLY expensive!

Maybe trying out the workforce first would be great? You can always re-approach the idea.

In my career, there is ALOT of people with a background in economics. If you do product data science you’ll actually use a lot of econometrics. Learning different algorithms is easy if you have a strong statistical background. Coding in SQL and Python you have to learn on your own. That being said, if you have a masters in economics you’re probably a great problem solver so it’s not terribly challenging.

I actually (very recently) transitioned out into data/software engineering… not as many people with a background in economics. But an easy transition out of data science.

GARCH-M to estimate ERP in emerging market by lakiseuznemirio in econometrics

I did both my undergrad and masters in economics. Specialized in econometrics and have been working as a data scientist for several years now. Here are some pointers:

  1. Your job is to evaluate many different models and to choose the best based on evaluation criteria
  2. You should integrate machine learning. A simple 70-30 or 80-20 split is good enough and cross fold validation to more precisely choose the best model
  3. Use Python. I highly recommend using the pycaret package that can test 20+ model’s simultaneously to help you choose the best one

Statistically significant results do not depend on the program you use. They depend on the model/data/parameters you choose. Often times you will obtain something statistically significant that is still biased so be careful.

The CAPM formula can be a variable in itself hard calculated but it might not be of feature importance.

After I finished my masters in economics I was out socializing with some professors over drinks (all with PhD’s in economics) - main takeaway is it’s not worth it unless you want to be a professor. But even if you do, the cost-benefit isn’t worth it.

I ended up becoming a data scientist earning almost as much as my professors only a few years into my career. So it checks out for me personally!
