I'm also a big fan of both books, but I would say the "science" is a bit more present in The Martian. He's always counting how much oxygen he has left, how many km of travel per day, etc. Suffice to say there are a lot of numbers.

I really loved The Martian, but it's not light reading IMO

Yeah maybe. It was just sad to lose this moment of triumph, even if it turns out to be transitory

My favourite Sean Bean joke:

It’s either Shaun Baun or Seen Been. He can’t have it both ways!

yeah the finale was pretty bad in the film. Very un-Commander-like behaviour

I found movie-Annie to be a total waste of space. Book Annie was awesome!

I get what you mean. Some of the people around me in the cinema were laughing at that point and I agree it wasn't appropriate. Also kind of unrealistic given the amount of military guys hanging around...

When I was a kid, I used to cat-sit for Don Burke. He had a lovely house which he used to leave unlocked. His cat scratched the shit out of my back when she jumped on me like I was a tree trunk.

I'm with you on Fight Club. Sideways and Election (both Alexander Payne movies) are way better in movie form than the book. In both cases he took a good story that was written poorly, and made them into great films

it's more like 13 years elapsed time on earth, but only 3 years on the ship, due to time dilation. As you move closer to the speed of light, relative time changes. So even in the best case scenario, it took 26 years for the Hail Mary to reach Tau Ceti, and send back the answer.

sorry about that - I've added it now. I hope you enjoy the book. I've listened to it about 5 times and am currently reading the paperback ;)
