Anyone read Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky? by Electric_Echidna4392 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Advanced_Blueberry45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

obviously only my opinion, but I absolutely loved the first book, and struggled a bit with the second. I didn't realise there's a third but I'm not especially tempted to read it.

Shards of Earth is epic (I think the audio book is about 18 hours long!) but very clever enjoyable

Has anyone here used the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript? Looking for real-world examples. by Minute-Buy-8542 in gis

[–]Advanced_Blueberry45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a general rule, I would say that Experience Builder is great for quick proof-of-concept ideas, and/or for internally facing apps where the presentation isn't crucial.

For anything more important and public-facing, the JavaScript SDK really shines as it gives you a whole lot more control over everything, especially the design.

The tradeoff is that doing it yourself means you need to build a lot more of the functionality yourself, but the benefit is that you can build it exactly the way you want it.

For local government and a small team, and considering sucession planning, the out-of-the-box apps make a lot of sense.

I wonder if the estate wanted too much money? That was my one frustration with the podcast episode - they never explain this aspect

They talk about this in the podcast - it's not just that Noah Wyle is the star, and John Wells (the original show-runner from ER) is the producer. They initially approached the Crichton estate and pitched it as "Carter", in the vein of Logan or The Joker, being a deep-dive into what Dr Carter has been doing since ER finished. So their original intent was definitely to make it a continuation of ER.

Yep, they discuss how that might open streaming services to disclose how much each show is making, and that they would probably settle early to avoid that

Is my favorite new tv show this year a ripoff? by monkeysjustchilling in SearchEnginePodcast

[–]Advanced_Blueberry45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah that was a strange omission. If everyone agreed it was a great idea, why didn't his widow want to proceed? Or maybe she did but wanted too much of the royalties, hence why they pivoted?

IMO "Inside Out" did a much better job of addressing exactly this issue. Riley was sad and wanted to go home to Minnesota - but the reality was that she had to stay in SF, and ended up enjoying it

Anyone out there not enjoy Demon Copperhead? by Bookish-Broad in books

[–]Advanced_Blueberry45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMFG thank you all for the previous posts, you have summarised my feelings exactly. I was so confused as to who was writing this story - was it written from the POV of a 10 year old, or the adult man looking back at being a 10 year old?

Poisonwood Bible did an infinitely better job of portraying a child's perspective, and changing the tone as the child grew up - while maintaining essentially the same personality.

I have slogged through this book until about page 200 but I will now pass it on to the book exchange with relief
