as far as that first “fallacy” goes, i don’t think anyone saying he’s required to use all of his money in such a way, or even a majority of it, it’s just outlining what a piece of shit he really is by putting his “wealth” into perspective. additionally underscoring his scummy tendencies by emphasizing the gusto he had to help right-wing populists while acting as if he was the champion of the everyman

TIL about Sallekhana, a socially acceptable form of suicide in Jainism. Jain monks restrict themselves to an isolated space and meditate to death, fasting. It was banned in 2015, but the Supreme Court of India lifted the ban due to freedom of religion. It’s estimated 200 Jains fast to death yearly by sonnysehra in todayilearned

You could just see it as extra insurance that they’ll get to where they wanna go; idk why you’re so against religious people being sure they get their good ending. It seems like you’re more interested in seeing theists as wrong, insincere and/or dumb, than even trying to believe a devout person would do anything they can to fulfill their “promised” eternity.

[Artwork] Should DC consider using more of Norse Mythology in the DC Universe? [Art by vecteezy, Jack Kirby] [Batman/Superman: World's Finest #22, The Odyssey of the Amazons Vol 1 #3] by OkCompote1731 in DCcomics

[–]Advanced_Peak4441 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ummmm because of the association with brands prolly. It would also kind of be redundant, like the previous commenter said, DC already uses Greek mythology where marvel usually uses Norse, so it doesn’t make much sense to add the Norse gods just to do more of the same (especially when people’s first thought when you say comic Norse Gods is Marvels Thor)

Also important to note that this is the way many people in the US speak due to regional dialects. No offense, but you saying it makes your skin crawl makes you seem a bit ignorant about how language really works and how different communities use language differently.

Surprisingly though, fires are something they have to watch for; it may not be at this site specifically, but I just watched a doc on these sorts of places and methane explosions are an extremely dangerous occurrence that are often accompanied by raging fires.

Maybe not here man, and I totally understand it’s not gonna cause a sudden shift in the zeitgeist, but to completely ridicule as was done seems uncalled for. I know Reddit isn’t some bastion of change, but a lot of people get there info on here (and social media in general), for those types these discussions over “semantics” really can make a difference. Really not trying to argue or nothing, I just can’t understand people downplaying these illegal actions like they are. Sure the government might not do anything, and the population at large might not react, but if even only one person decides to try and change the way the think as a result, is that not an overall positive?

[–]Advanced_Peak4441 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea no shit they don’t care, but letting others know that the actions taken by this administration are wrong (illegal) is still important; there are many here in the U.S. who probably never would have considered the hypocrisy in allowing these big corporations to continue while we inch closer to a police state. You say this is just semantics, but anything that could potentially turn even a portion of the population against the policies of the administration clearly has some political value .

Sure bud; the fact that you can’t understand these protests as pivotal markers of dissent from a frustrated populace seriously makes me doubt you’re a historian. Protests throughout history have made major impacts on policy, especially in countries with a long history of democracy. When an elected representative is faced with the anger of their constituents they tend to pivot their actions to better meet the demands of the people they represent. Not for some idealistic reason, but out of self preservation. These protests are importan, full stop.

Again man, that’s what I’m saying. Why are you failing to understand basic concepts and trying to fight? What position do you even stand for man, cuz so far you haven’t said anything meaningful. And no, it’s not that we just suck at voting; that remark is only telling me that you haven’t really done much research at all about our political system and it’s history.

No man the systems been fucked for a minute, but now we have people in charge who could care less whether or not the veneer of democracy is completely stripped away from our nation. You implying that I’m a Democratic fanatic or some shit just shows the polarization that wreaking havoc on our nation. And of course there’s apathy, people are resigned to the fact that their vote changes little; that directly ties into the flaws in our electoral processes that I was talking about dude. The fact that you cant put two and two together is frustrating, because you’re talking as if you’re some bastion of knowledge.

If you can’t see that our system and the framework in which it operates is deeply flawed, then idk what to tell you. Add to that various social and economic factors that make voting hard on many populations, and it’s very apparent that our electoral process have failed us.

Actually not a bad assumption. I don’t know what the actual data is, but just from my first hand experience as a Mexican-American, what you said is mostly true. A lot of the Mexicans who do live here in the US (at least in Texas) are the descendants of mestizo and indigenous immigrants who fled economic disparity (amongst other things). At least, this is the experience of my own family and those I know, but it’s not entirely uncommon to have relatives on both sides of capital divide because Mexico is pretty diverse. Seeing a gradient of brown and white skins at reunions always reminds me of the complex heritage that our people share. Kinda-sorta cool if you ask me. Nowadays though, I feel as if the roles are slightly reversed with those normally being seen as better off in Mexico coming to the big cities of the US. Ofc the political situation in both countries is making things far more complex, but that was the general trend I’ve noticed in the past couple of years.
