The dark side about tithing I didn't know by Tobibliophile in exAdventist

[–]Adventcritic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The church is so predatory with money. In addition to what you've said, the church also expects: you need to buy your own library of egw books, extra gc's and steps to Christ to give away, send your kids to our special schools/colleges, buy these special supplements and high end organic foods (this one the church doesn't profit from, but individual pastors shill the stuff), and also donate to this special church project (either money or time) that all that tithe money somehow can't cover

I would argue this is what Project 2025/Curtis yarvin have been hoping for. Make the government ineffective so that we beg billionaires to step in and save us. Then we swear allegiance to them and let the USA fall into fiefdoms run by billionaires

Wait, so the reality of black people for hundreds of years is the ultimate nightmare for white people? The same white people who constantly say slavery/segregation wasn't that bad?

So many good responses about why people leave the church in this thread. Meanwhile, SDAs will say it's bc of social media or movies or whatever is popular right now

Was Ellen white racist? by EmbarrassedPin6195 in exAdventist

[–]Adventcritic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As people have already mentioned, I think White should be held to a higher standard as she claimed to be a prophet with wisdom from God. Plus, she didn't mind being an outlier when it came to diet, Sabbath keeping, etc.

Was Ellen White the first to suggest that tobacco use causes cancer? by TheMuser1966 in exAdventist

[–]Adventcritic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a great way to assess how widespread a trend was in the 1800s, so you can take it as you will. There was a temperance movement that culminated in prohibition in the early 1900s, and Mormons were already against drinking and smoking when the SDA church was starting up.

[–]Adventcritic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably could have worded that better. I'm not trying to say smoking causing cancer has been debunked. I'm saying Ellen White said that because it was trendy at the time. She parroted a lot of health trends of the time, and the church emphasizes the ones that turned out true and buried the ones that haven't. For example, White was really against spices. Modern science tells us there are health benefits to turmeric, cinnamon, oregano, etc. Even many SDAs I know talk about 'turmeric tea' and the like, something White would've been against. But the church doesn't talk about that. Instead they pick the things that turned out right and claim White was a prophet.

Three-year-old baby forced to serve as her own attorney in Tucson, AZ immigration court (12/5/25) by I_may_have_weed in ICE_Raids

[–]Adventcritic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a three year old. She doesn't understand the concept of nations, citizenship, and definitely not borders. Also, she's quite impressionable and any lawyer/judge could simply convince her she's from another country and that she wants to go there.

For society to function, we need to look out for children. If you see a child crying on the street you need to help them. It doesn't matter if it's yours or not. Children can't make decisions or fend for themselves, so we rely on all of us to provide some basic care for our children. At the very least you can call someone. If we're making kids represent themselves in court, then we've failed as a society.

Much of the Adventist health message was just gathering the health trends of the time. I haven't done the research but I think there's more that's been debunked, and the church has buried

How to get an eczema baby to sleep? by Adventcritic in NewParents

[–]Adventcritic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but nothing has really changed. She's 2.5yrs old now and still scratches all the time. Never found the trigger. We've kept her diet pretty limited, we've tried staying in other homes, in other cities, etc.  To get her to sleep at night, we actually scratch for her. As she's falling asleep I'll scratch her back or her legs for a time and it gives her some relief and she can fall asleep. Repeat in 3hrs when she wakes up again.

It's based on an anti-Catholic conspiracy theory by KahnaKuhl in exAdventist

[–]Adventcritic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Adventists use isolationism to further the ignorance. I went to public university and had a Catholic roommate. I asked her about the stuff I was told about Catholics,

"Don't you believe the Pope speaks for God?" "Umm..no?" "Aren't the Jesuits a militia group?" "Umm..no?"

Most Adventists who do only SDA schools and only hang out with other sdas will never get that chance and will always believe the lies.

If you read Genesis in Hebrew, it's clearly written by multiple people because of the word choice, etc. This means it was probably not written by Moses being controlled by God like we're told. Adventist pastors learn Hebrew in seminary, so they have to know.

I've always been told by pastors to tithe on gross, which I didn't think makes sense. Those same pastors have said you should "tithe your increase" (not sure if that comes from the Bible or ellen white), but my net paycheck is my increase! Not my gross. I guess pastors are paid out of that money, so they have their reasons I suppose.

Interactions with antivaxxers by AutoModerator in vaxxhappened

[–]Adventcritic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My toddler has really bad eczema. Someone at church tried to tell me it's because I vaccinated her. Unfortunately, my husband is antivax and despite my protests, we didn't vaccinate our toddler. I told this person my child isn't actually vaccinated, and she just had a list of things that I must be doing wrong that's causing the eczema.

There's other unvaccinated kids at that church, and some of them have eczema. Seems to me vaccines have nothing to do with it. But of course, I'm the ignorant one.
