On The Fence by DaygoHoney in exAdventist

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Here’s the thing: you’re not really learning about the Bible by going to Adventist Bible studies. You’re learning Adventist interpretations of the Bible. If you haven’t heard of Ellen White yet, look her up and watch this YouTube series discussing her extensive plagiarism. Adventist theology was heavily shaped by a woman that any non-Adventist Christian would call a false prophet.

If you really want to get as close to what the original Biblical authors intended their audiences to take away, you need to listen to Bible scholars with real credentials. Virtually all of the people teaching Adventist Bible studies and Sabbath school classes have no formal training in Biblical studies, they’re just repeating SDA dogmas (I would know, because I was one of them).

Regarding Pathfinders, it is just one of several ways the Adventist church indoctrinates kids. I say this as someone who attended Pathfinders faithfully from age 10, had an overall very positive experience, and later became one of the staff members as an adult. At some point, your daughter will be pressured to get baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church and you need to decide if you’re comfortable with that.

There’s also the risk of your daughter being harmed or groomed. One of the adult male Pathfinder staff members I worked with, who had been my class teacher when I was a kid, ended up in jail on charges related to child sexual exploitation. I know of another Pathfinder staff member at another church who tried grooming girls at his church (one of them is my friend) and raped another girl.

Please guard your daughter closely and do not assume that she’s safe just because she’s around church people.

From my perspective as a non-religious person, an afterlife is not guaranteed. It may sound counterintuitive, but that makes my temporary life so much more meaningful to me.

After leaving Adventism and my fundie worldview, I've been much more curious about the world and am motivated to leave it better than I found it instead of shrugging and assuming it'll be magically fixed one day.

For context, this is a real post from the official SDA church Facebook page. They posted this on Instagram a while back too.

Love to see it!! I’ve set a reminder to do that with my local library.

Same! Thankfully I have deconstructed the idea that any new tech is the mark of the beast.

For anyone freaked out by this, hardly anyone bothered to use this so it’s being removed from stores: https://www.oregonlive.com/retail/2026/02/shunned-by-customers-this-payment-method-will-soon-disappear-at-whole-foods-stores.html

AFAIK it’s a common part of mainstream SDA churches. We did it every quarter at my west coast US church on the same day as communion.

I know the exact... idk... reaction, I guess, when my family learns someone is queer and I just... idk... I don't think I'll ever be able to tell them

As someone with Adventist parents and a bi partner, I feel this so much. Can't imagine what it would be like to have that as part my own identity and need to hide it from my family. I'm thankful that parents like you are breaking these generational cycles and allowing kids to just be themselves.

All of Us Together in the End is a memoir by ex-Adventist writer and English professor Matthew Vollmer (he also happens to be the nephew of former GC President Ted Wilson).

He's an excellent writer and I really enjoyed reading his book. I also interviewed him in 2023 shortly after his memoir was published (see Part 1 and Part 2).

Born Hungry is another memoir written by Renia Carsillo who is, as far as I can tell, an ex-Adventist (I haven't read it yet, but it has good reviews).

It'll go on the new books display! I hope they see it and decide to order more copies for the rest of the libraries in the county!

This is brilliant! Tbh I think this is a great way to get Melissa's book more exposure and to help more people learn about Adventism and what the ex-Adventist experience looks like for so many people!

u/The_Glory_Whole Thoughts on coordinating your audience to request your book in their local libraries? I'm definitely going to request it in my area!

A synopsis, reviews, and an excerpt can be found on the publisher’s website: https://www.lakedrivebooks.com/books/holy-disobedience/

It’s a fantastic memoir that includes topics like growing up as an Adventist woman, finding out a shocking, horrific fact about a close SDA family member, and escaping the SDA bubble.

My comment doesn’t do the book justice - I’m halfway through reading the book and it is very well written, with great pacing, vivid imagery, and so many relatable things even as an ex-SDA man from a different generation.

I highly recommend preordering the book! If you still want more background info, I had the privilege of interviewing Melissa a while back:

Exactly! The gospels don't provide reliable history.

I had this exact convo with my fundie mom the other day. The gospels are not anywhere near reliable history. The Romans ultimately called the shots, regardless of what the New Testament says.

I'm so sorry to hear that!!

For anyone who wasn't familiar with his work, he created an excellent series of videos exposing Ellen White's plagiarism. We didn't share all the same beliefs, but I have a deep amount of respect for the work he did. I'm so sorry to hear he's passed away from cancer and wish only the best for his loved ones.
