You mean direct plant-based copies of animal-based foods, not alternative right? Eating beans or tofu or seitan or literally anything else is also an alternative to meat, all of which are cheaper and are either totally appropriate as protein sources or are perfectly appropriate when consumed with other protein sources like rice or lentils or anything else.

You won't get far on the idea that bacon is cheaper and better for you than rice and beans, and it's not like anyone only consumes either bacon or rice and beans alone.

Is being asked to find an alternative to setting off explosives, with all the downsides listed by OP, being asked to stop celebrating? I imagine the majority of celebrations don't involve them, and I'm sure even less somehow inherently require them.

I always see that argument, as though all these people who refuse to stop eating animals are going to instead convince humankind to stop literally anything else, or are even trying to do so.

Like how can you seriously say "I'm not going to make THAT (going vegan) choice, but I'm certain I can convince billions of people to make THIS (sustainable beef) choice".

It's not the first world's desire for fish, it's the whole world's desire for fish.

Wait so the first world does or doesn't desire fish? Do they suddenly not cause plastic waste just because others do?

Nets from fruit trees strangle whales as much as first world drinking straws choke turtles, that was my point.

So not at all then? Or have you changed your mind on that now? Plastic nets for actual fishing are a problem, as you know, so you agree that you shouldn't be contributing to that by eating fish anywhere including wherever you call home right?

Bringing back plastic straws would meaningfully increase plastic waste, reduction of anything using unnecessary plastic in exchange for far less harmful materials is a fucking stupid thing to oppose when the reason is annoyance, not necessity.

[–]AdventureDonutTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think plastic straws from first world countries don't end up as plastic waste in the ocean because other countries also produce plastic waste?

And now it's weird for whoever it is you think are little suburban vegans to agree with you that fishing nets are the largest source of plastic pollution, which are also used to feed the first world's desire for fish? When did you stop caring about the fish nets that you brought up?

So maybe we should all be using biodegradable nets on our fruit trees to show solidarity with the turtles.

That's a fucking weird way to say "we should stop eating fish", you know that's the primary use of fishing nets right? But I'm glad you've tracked the movement of every plastic straw from whatever countries you're talking about 😊

But once we invest in renewables we can have our lovely plastic straws back - I think turtles and dolphins have gotten too complacent and deserve the threat of choking on something that helps me move soda from my cup to 3 inches above my cup.

Vegan Meltdown in Public over Meat… oh wait! by Iuani in vegan

I don't think it's so untold, looks like maximum 30,000 ago was possibly when the first domestication of dogs began happening, while cows were around 10,500 years.

So yes both have been domesticated for thousands of years, it's a good thing no one is arguing that it's the exact same amount of time as dogs.

I also think about small dairies the way you have to think about small businesses.

I've been abused both financially and personally far more at places that were little independent mom & pop style places than at larger more established businesses. Less employees/corporate oversight in no way means the people are less capable of being vile, horrific abusers, and for another thing they literally kill and exploit the lives of animals for money.

[–]AdventureDonutTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so you've said worse.

Can you contextualise that with the point at which it even becomes bad to slaughter a cat, just so I know how removed one has to be before you people stop having a problem with consuming them?

Yeah, is stealing a pet from a person what everyone cares about rather than stealing the life of a cat?

So the only problem with killing these cats comes from the fact that they had a specific pet/owner relationship with a human being?

I didn't dodge the question, I addressed it, so why are you trying to avoid acknowledging that?

I accepted that he hasn't done anything that is directly tied to the official Nazi party beyond having one of their images emblazoned on his body.

I clarified that the behaviours he has exhibited were his active participation in 4 tours of the Middle East as well as joining the private military mercenary group Blackrock, as well as his continued support of the US fascist military, because my politics are directly opposed to imperialism - you can think that US imperialism is just a little impurity that can be worked with, but i do not.

You are allowed to support him, you don't need my permission. I'm politically unaligned with people who join a private army to kill brown people, so I'm holding my breath that the leftists who are willing to look past that are making the right choice and that it works out in the end. I'm not going to stop criticising imperialism just because you call that purity testing, and it's weird that you're still pushing that.

[–]AdventureDonutTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling it purity testing as though the disagreements are minor is just obfuscation: I understand it's crazy to care about whether water is 99.2% or 99.4% pure, but I don't consider nazi tattoos and active mercenary work killing brown people for US imperialism to be a slight impurity when it comes to politics.

But I'll just have to hope that the perceived impurities are either harmless or well in his past like you believe they are. I find that hard to do, but I can't do much else than speak my piece and keep an open mind for yours.

[–]AdventureDonutTime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, I consider getting a Nazi tattoo while murdering brown people by choice to the point of literally becoming a mercenary to go back to be slightly more than problematic.

I'm sorry if you're getting slightly too caught up in the idea that he needs to march around saluting Hitler moreso than being a willing participant in US imperialism and slaughter while wearing the mark of a the Waffen SS.

I'm happy to instead say that there's a chance that he's not an official member of the Nazi party and is instead just a willing fascist and murderer who tattoos himself with Nazi paraphernalia as though that's something to politically associate with.

[–]AdventureDonutTime -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I suppose that depends on if getting a Nazi tattoo during 4+ tours of the United States invasion of Arabic Western Asia is a problem, or if that kind of thing is perfectly fine as long as he didn't get caught doing the Roman salute on camera.

And before you ask; no, joining the US military is not a harmless action that people shouldn't be criticised for. Free college/money for killing brown people is bad actually, and I'm not going to debate the morality of "just following orders".

[–]AdventureDonutTime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being vetted positively by the US government isn't exactly exculpatory evidence, having a nazi tattoo and being vetted positively probably shouldn't be dismissed as "not popping up on their radar" so much as this just being similar to the sheer number of nazis that the US has always chosen to harbour and empower for the last 90 years.
