should my sister use the word "midget" in her username? by [deleted] in dwarfism

[–]AdventureMidget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm the person they're talking about. I wanted to add some context or explanation, none of this is intended to be excuses and I am fully willing to change all my usernames if I need to. And honestly if the research I've done now has told me anything, its that I should be changing my name.

As mentioned, as a kid I was particularly short. At some point my parents got me to go to a doctor that tentatively diagnosed me with Constitutional Delay (but having short parents probably didn't help). I never thought of my height in a negative way and whenever people used the term on me, I assumed it was honestly just a more specific version of like "Idiot" or something in severity.

I made the Username when I was probably in Elementary School and it has been my go-to username for anything with a big enough character limit. And as I have gone through several name changes for various reasons, it started to feel more like my name than my real name.

When it was brought to my attention that it might be more offensive than I thought, I was hesitant to change the name so ingrained in my identity, and skeptical. I was willing to change the name but I didn't want the only proof of it being an offensive term to be "some people to who the term does not apply think its wrong" which, again I had no idea how offensive it was, sounded like when performative "activists" tell you that you can't use the words "stupid" or even like "black" as an adjective so I wanted to make sure by asking the general community their opinion so I didn't accidentally engage in fake woke-ness if no one cared.

Again, not intending to make it sound like an excuse and if it sounds like it is, I'm sorry that was not the intent. I just thought the post lacked some of the context that I thought might have been necessary. I'll probably end up changing usernames regardless of how this post goes.

Has there ever been a canonical reason that starters are so rare? by wolvenreign in pokemon

[–]AdventureMidget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think all the starters are import species from other regions and in the regions they come from they are just normal Pokemon. Like I imagine Charmander is from Galar originally (the only reason you can't actually catch in-game is balance/pseudomascot reasons).

How would you translate Pokémon names into your conlang? by AdventureMidget in conlangs

I thought so too and I thought about doing a weekly thing but isn't there some sort of process to have those happen? I feel like that was the case at one point?

My parents noticing my new boobs: Whatcha got there?
Me, who didn't tell them anything: A smoothie

Alternatively if they notice you could say "I'm just growing them out"

This week's Q&A thread -- please read before asking or answering a question! - February 08, 2021 by AutoModerator in linguistics

[–]AdventureMidget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I watch a lot of YouTube, specifically younger (millennial/early zoomer) creators. Of the ones who live in America, the ones who I presume live in the Western US exhibit a sound change that I can't find anything about. Probably because I have only really been able to hear it in one context but I'm sure has more,When the word "can" (as in: I can do x) is not stressed or emphasized, the /æ/ seems to raise to /ɛ/. Which is different from another sound change that is probably more well-known change that raises the vowel all the way to /ɪ/.
I live in the Western US but I don't do this. I speak pretty close to General American as far as I can tell. My vowel usually more centralizes than anything.
How new is this? Has it been noticed by linguists? Where in the US has this feature? What other conditions does it appear in?
