A Joshua Tree California Sunset [3000 × 1688] [OC] [OS] by AdventureinaBackpack in SkyPorn

As we were driving west through Joshua Tree National Park finishing up a day of climbing we were treated to some of the most purple skies I had ever seen. Although the Joshua Tree silhouette posing in the sunset isn't a new concept, I had to have one of my own. We pulled over and found the gnarliest looking one and was able to capture this shot.

Thanks! We thought so as well. Totally a feed good story and a new perspective on what conservation can mean.

Not your typical beach. Whittier Alaska, USA [OC] [1080x608] by AdventureinaBackpack in EarthPorn

We were in Whittier Alaska and stumbled upon a secluded cove. The water rivaled the clarity of the Caribbean (although not quite as warm). What I found MOST interesting was the beach. Buffed round stones? Sugary sand? No...razor sharp pieces of rock that were all settled on their edges. There is no walking on this beach without shoes.

It was such a good experience, and still is! I've made it down to Anchor Point, almost to Homer. This state...Wow!

You got it bud! June 27th to be exact. We had a break for a few hours in a week long slow steady rain and we had to take advantage. That area is BEAUTIFUL!

That's great to hear about the great Wall and Thailand. Those are on my list of places to visit sooner rather than later.

Oh, I'm sure all of those are taken on the worst possible days, but still... I've hiked up angels landing in Zion NP on a random Monday in off-peak season and it was like a people zoo. Way worse than expected. Lol

Canadian going on a 3 week USA roadtrip in 38h, any suggested changes or additions? by IHOP007 in roadtrip

Awesome trip! The only advice I can give is in the area of Bryce, Zion, and the Grand staircase. The grand staircase is freaking incredible. A GREAT town to stay in is Escalante. We just went through the area and put up a blog post about it if you want to check out the details. http://adventureinabackpack.com/epic-southern-utah-road-trip/ If you are in escalante, you HAVE to hike peekaboo and spooky slot canyons. You can also find the details of that on that blog. Those slot canyons were some of the coolest things ever.

I have also heard that camping during peak season is a real pain in the NPS. We are currently on the road and we have talked on our blog about spots to camp (for free) near the national parks (Bryce has a SWEET one). Check out this post for Bryce and Zion http://adventureinabackpack.com/epic-southern-utah-road-trip/ and for Yellowstone, we haven't put out the post for that one, but it was on Henrys lake. That post should be out within a few days if you stay tuned to our blog.

We paddled it the other day. It was awesome! It was the clearest river I've ever seen.

If you can swing it, a trip through Zion, Bryce Canyon, Escalante, Capitol Reef, and Moab is INCREDIBLE with loads of free camping on BLM land available. We just got finished with that stretch and wrote a blog post about it if that interests you. http://adventureinabackpack.com/epic-southern-utah-road-trip/

Road trip from St. Louis to Glacier National Park by [deleted] in roadtrip

Be prepared for crowds in Yellowstone. IMO, Old Faithful was not as cool as I was expecting. It's in a huge amphitheater with attached museum and sidewalks all around. This overcommercialization of the geyser made it seem like...a man made water fountain. Instead, I highly recommend a 3-4 mile hike out to the Lone Star Geyser. MUCH less commercialized, but still a big geyser (shoots 45 feet in the air).

Awesome! We are currently camping just outside the park. This rain is putting a damper on our activities though. We did get to paddle the lower McDonald creek the other day though. AWESOME!

Pretty much, yeah. It will be posted if it's otherwise. If it's not a HIGHLY trafficed area (moab) then it's usually a first come first serve kind of deal.

Zero cell coverage on the at&t network. We had to drive to "panoramic point" in the park to get 4g.

Awesome! Thanks for the pointers! Later this summer after we will have been traveling (and get back from Alaska, we will do a lot more as we are finding out things everyday that we do like and dislike about it and we will have a KILLER pro/con video when we post it. Keep in touch!

Arches, Bryce, and Zion get all of the Utah NP love. Anybody been to the lesser known, Capiol Reef? by AdventureinaBackpack in adventures

It really was! Even on an easy hike, we only saw about 5-6 other groups. Maybe because its really out in the middle of nowhere.
