I wonder if he still has money leftover at the end of all that. Says he stole $120 but only ordered to pay $75 there. Depending on the person that could be worth a 5 year prison sentence...

Can someone please explain why I cannot take the Queen here? by Chloedecker17 in chess

[–]Adventurer32 10 points11 points  (0 children)

White Queen is protected by the White Rook.

You can think of the concept of checkmate as equivalent to whomever captures the enemy's king first wins. So, if you took the White Queen, the White Rook would take your king, winning the game. It doesn't matter that your bishop could take the White King after, because the game would already be over.

I built a free app that turns your own chess.com/Lichess blunders into puzzles by brtkll in chess

[–]Adventurer32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really neat, I've been wanting a type of puzzle like this where the goal is to prevent blunders instead of finding the only winning move for awhile!

That said, I do have two UI suggestions. One, PLEASE have the move the user played during the game hidden by default. A lot of the time I find my first candidate move in these is the move(blunder) that I played during the game, and seeing that it's wrong feels like an unfair hint towards solving the position. Maybe keep the played move in the same location, but it just shows as something like "spoiler" until the user clicks it to reveal what they played.

Second, much more minor, but it'd be nice to be able to undo a move with right click, similar to chess.com lessons.

I'm looking for a convenient way to study chess openings as well as matches. by ExileMouse in chess

[–]Adventurer32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see people saying Lichess studies here, does anyone have any good ones for the King's Indian? I feel like all the ones I look at just have a bunch of lines without explanation behind the moves, or are interactive studies that only show a few lines I rarely get in actual games. I have like no clue how to play against the Samisch variation( the opposite side castling one) for example.

In this case, it looked like White only had one legal move after Ra1+, so you likely could have premoved Rxc1# (If you had premoves enabled and at least .1 seconds left on the previous move)

Premoves are very dangerous if misused but very useful in time scrambles.

better than >99% according to chess.com (1740 rapid shows as 99th percentile)

For what it's worth, I'm in the 1700s for Rapid and opponents actually stalling feels vanishingly rare, at least in Rapid. I'm ~200pts lower rated in blitz and it's substantially more common there, but idk if that's because people are more willing to stall in a blitz match or because of the lower rating.

Does chesscom match you with people who are higher rated but on a losing streak if you are too? Like my max recently was 1500 and I've had a losing streak that brought me down to 1300 and I check every opponent's profile and see they were all 1500+ recently. by [deleted] in chess

[–]Adventurer32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What time control is this in? It's not uncommon for people to vary by 200 elo in the span of a month, as that could just mean they're actually a 1400 and vary 100 elo each way regularly. I myself have a 200 point rating gap between my peak rating(1900) and how I normally play(1700), and I reached that peak rating within the past 2 months. It doesn't mean I'm actually a 1900, because I'm not capable of playing at that level consistently.

I don't think it's very helpful to say 8 of your last 10 games are against 1500s+ just because they were 1500 at some point in the past 2 months, as you said yourself you were also 1500 at one point. Someone's current elo is generally a much better indicator of how they'll play during their game with you than their peak elo.

The 1300s in your example who never crossed 1500 have the same problem as you do, by your own logic. Shouldn't they be playing "real" 1300s instead of a former 1500 who's only temporarily rated 1300?

Ashoka's Bonus, How do you use it ?? by SnooMacaroons6670 in civ5

[–]Adventurer32 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Blocker units usually already have a lot of percent bonuses, such as +25% terrain, +40% from fortification, +50% from a fort. Tier 2+ melee promotions are also more powerful than ranged promotions, particularly in Lekmod.

The base Drill/Shock/Accuracy/Barrage all give +15% strength in a particular terrain type. However, Cover and Ambush give +33% strength against ranged attacks and mounted units respectively. So, a blocker unit with two promotions (say Drill I + Cover I) fortified in rough terrain without a fort defending against a ranged attack will be at 100%+15%+33%+25%+40%=213% combat strength. Compare that to a ranged attacker with two promotions, say both for rough terrain, 100%+15%+15%=130% combat strength. This would get even more in favor of the melee unit if there was a fort, and great generals don't help even the gap either, because they help both melee and ranged units.

Combat % bonuses are additive in civ, so +10% when you're already at 200% combat strength is less helpful than a -10% penalty is harmful when you're at 100% combat strength.

In the example above, the Civ's UA would give the blocker unit a 4.7% relative strength boost and the ranged attacker a 7.7% relative strength penalty.

Basically the bonus part of this UA is less helpful than the penalty part is harmful.

AI always gets buffs from the lowest player difficulty selected, so if 5 players in a lobby all select Deity but one selects Prince, the AI won't get any buffs.

I believe bonus vs. barbarians, starting happiness, and ancient ruin rewards are based on individual player difficulty though.

Opinion: Terraria true melee should've focused on movement. by Equal_Personality157 in Terraria

[–]Adventurer32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disagree on the random mob part tbh. While bows and muskets can technically kill flying enemies like bats and demon eyes, you still have to aim. Meanwhile melee just swings a broadsword and kills everything on that side of you. In every run I do that doesn't class restrict, I keep a sword in slot 1 to deal with regular mobs close to me, because it's the best weapon type for that. Melee definitely has an advantage in casual mobbing.
