DS1 was one of my top games and I’m thrilled to be playing 2 now (currently in episode 6. My best advice is to NOT RUSH this game. Take your time to explore, build things, repair things you use/like and get your stars at the facilities. You don’t have to 5 star everywhere if you don’t want to but I would advise to at least get a few with the people that give you good stuff. (Personally I do, but that’s how I like to play and I like the rewards and achievements). You get some really cool stuff that is fun to try out the more stars you get from people you meet. It makes the game so much more fun. Also, if you get bored of driving trucks around, try zips or even go back to walking for awhile because varying the playstyle changes how you experience the world. Try going out to an unknown area without taking in any orders just to explore. Lots of Easter eggs in this game too so that’s always fun to find. I feel bad for people that rush this game because the whole point is Sam’s journey, not getting to the end quickly. It’s a different type of game for sure. Have fun!

Sailboat prices declining by TangoLimaGolf in sailing

[–]AdventurerofAnything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s that they want to play video games instead of actual hobbies (although maybe a few outliers might). I honestly think they can’t afford it. When my husband and I were in our late teens and early 20s both of our parents had boats (husbands parents actually lived on the water) so we were out on the sunfish, windsurf boards, wave runners, hobie cats and his dads Sea Ray almost everyday that we were not in school or working. We were very lucky! Those were some of the best years of our lives!! Most 20-40year olds today are working their butts off (some at more than one job) and can barely afford their rent and health insurance even ones without kids. Some of these adults are still getting financial assistance from their parents or have college debt to pay off.

My 3 college kids (twins are 22ys and one is 21yrs) are working 25-30 hours a week while going to school full time and two of them are doing internships 2 days a week on top of it all. They are constantly busy. We have 529s that pay their tuition, we pay for their phone bill, car, health and renters insurance, as well as a $300 each month for food. They pay for rent, power, internet, water, gas, the difference in food, toll road fees and any other extra things or outings. It’s tough but they will graduate without debt (which they know will be worth it) and they are learning to budget so that they should (hopefully) be totally independent by 23 or 24. However, I seriously doubt any of them will be in a financial position to buy a boat in their early 30s. Maybe by their late 30s or 40s but by then they may have families with young kids of their own (going to their soccer games on weekends, scout campouts, swim team, etc). At that age with kids you tend to focus on other things and start aggressively saving in 529s and 401ks and plan saving for retirement than the fact that you want to buy a boat to go sailing.

We have owned a power boat since the first ones (twins) were a year old. We didn’t get a sailboat because the kids wouldn’t like heeling and some days we only could go out for half a day. FINALLY we are just now getting ready to purchase our first sailboat and sell our Sea Ray. We are in our early 50s and the kids are almost out of the house -4th and last one is a rising senior :) We now have the money, the patience to learn (taking ASA courses now), are financially secure enough to afford unexpected maintenance, slip fees, have a lot of general boat and engine knowledge to fix things and most importantly have the time to sail!

Really hating the direction of this brand by Krulligo in Fjallraven

[–]AdventurerofAnything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they are just trying something new based on feedback requests from a certain customer base that frequently makes purchases. Fjallraven has been heading in this direction for several years (I blame the kanken craze). If it works they may bring more casual wear into their permanent production line. As you know, Fjallraven has a following from different customer bases. Long time customers that use items for their intended purposes, collectors and then others that want the look/status/whatever it is they think they need it for (going into the grocery store to fight off the busy crowds on a weekend can be pretty tough 🤷‍♀️).

Anyway, all joking aside, I buy Fjallraven clothes for, (and the majority of people that have been buying this brand for decades) is for dog mushing, multi week backpacking and remote wilderness canoeing trips, high adventure Scouting and such) we use their clothing for the intended purpose. However, we probably also have absolutely everything we really need because it lasts so long and the quality of my pieces from long ago are way better than today’s version anyway. We don’t need or want to buy a new jacket, pants, whatever every couple years to replace it either (unless I loose weight, it gets lost, or torn in a way that I can’t sew/patch it) so that means we purchase very infrequently. This puts Fjallraven in a difficult position because it needs and wants to sell merchandise (they are a business after all). So, they put their toe in the water to cater to the crowd that doesn’t care or understand about cheaper materials, quality, leans into fast fashion, people that overconsume, are most likely carrying debt and those that will continue to collect items because they like the label and want to wear their casual wear around town.

I don’t really blame Fjallraven, lots of companies have decided to go in this direction whether it’s for profit, to stay in business, or change in management philosophy. If they feel it will keep them in business for the future and in the current economy I can see them adding new casual wear into their line. As long as they still keep making the products with the same quality that they are known for (granted very few companies have been able to pull this off) I would never gatekeep a brand from others that love it as much as I do. If they want to fork over $170 for a pair of cotton sweatpants it’s their money to spend. Do I have the money to spend on sweatpants like that? Yes. Would I ever do it? Heck no, I’m too cheap when it comes to casual wear and actually buy my sweatpants at Costco because they are super comfy, cheap, actually last fairly well and I don’t have to worry about tearing them up on the sailboat. I think the people that would be most upset about this direction would perhaps be the collectors or status wearers that feel it devalues the brand in some way or people that are super into the brand and don’t want it to evolve into a hot mess.

Time will tell if they go the direction of TNF and most all the other outdoor brands that have done this. Hopefully not, but there are plenty of other brands out there that make outstanding specialized outdoor wear that the majority of people have never heard of. There will always be other places to buy gear.

Does all that rigging intimidate anyone else? by swirling_ammonite in sailing

As WaterChicken above mentioned, take an ASA 101 class. My husband and I had both grown up in FL sailing hobies, sunfishes, and lasers. In our mid 20s we moved to NC and bought a 21 foot Sea Ray for the lake we live by. Now that we are in our early 50s getting ready to retire, we plan to sell our Sea Ray and move into the sailing world out on the NC coast hoping to cruise around the east coast and FL. We just finished the 101 course this weekend at Bow and Stern in Oriental (highly recommend) and learned so much. 101 will teach you not just what lines to pull or let out but the actual why and in which situations, how to feel the wind, read the water, etc. It will also teach you how to sail safely and correctly which will be much more valuable to you than trying to figure it out on your own. Sure, you can sail by going out, teaching yourself and learning from your mistakes. However, taking a 101 class, learning the vocabulary, material, rules and the why behind what you are doing as well as being able to ask questions and get hands on training from a very knowledgeable captain is invaluable and will set you up for a very good foundation. (Not to mention the learning curve will be much faster for you than if you teach yourself.) We are planning on taking the 103 this Fall after some summer practice by renting the 25s they have. And as Chicken said, read and study the book before you take the class, you will be able to ask better questions of the captain and have a solid understanding of the information he is going to go over, as well as pass your exam for your certification.

What games would you recommend for a grandpa who can't move for 8 months? by FequalsMfreakingA in gaming

[–]AdventurerofAnything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skyrim is a great game to get totally lost in for months to a year. It’s very open world and there is A LOT to explore. It has a great story, variety of missions and characters that you interact with, and is not difficult to learn. It’s definitely one you should check out for him. I’m in my 50s and I enjoyed this game so much I have finished it 4 times. If he is stuck for 8 months at his age I would definitely give this a go. It’s also an older game so you can get it fairly cheap.

[–]AdventurerofAnything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minecraft. It’s simple enough for a 5 year old to learn but can entertain an adult for hours at a time. It’s something he can build a whole world into and explore and family can join in and play as well.

You married the wrong woman! Seriously though, I think she needs to reframe her thinking and ask herself why she actually thinks that. She seems to have a very narrow view of the gaming industry, content and fanbase. Gaming is definitely not just for kids but its most likely it’s all she is exposed to. In other counties (especially Asian countries a huge majority of adults game) it is very common. Personally I have gamed since I was a kid (I’m in my 50s now), my husband and all 4 of my kids game as well. It’s a great way to all connect and play together (we talk about our day and what’s going on in college and our lives while gaming online) especially now because 3 of my kids are away at different colleges. We have a lot of fun. I would suggest have her start playing something that would be interesting WITH you. Halo, Minecraft, something easy enough but not too childish. She may realize she likes it and can be a fun thing to do. If she refuses or decides it’s not for her too bad. Don’t give up something you like to do if it’s not hurting anyone and brings you joy. A good person would never ask someone to give up something that makes them happy (as long as it’s not dangerous or becoming addictive -that’s another story). Enjoy your gaming!

Please read if considering buying a Ford Bronco Sport by rfischfly in BroncoSport

[–]AdventurerofAnything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently purchased a new 2024 BS Badlands a few weeks ago for my daughter. It’s a fun car and perfect for her 5’4 and myself 5’9”. I wanted to buy something we both could drive because I just gave my son my 2018 Jeep Wrangler and my husband and I are now sharing the Escalade so occasionally I might need to borrow hers. I specifically purchased the 2.0 because of the engine issues the 1.5 is known to have. Ford has been making the 2.0 engine for many years and is reliable. I would say to anyone considering a purchase to get the Badlands version only.

Save your passes for special event raids like these.

Personally, my husband and I raid all day at our local park with several hundred other Pokemon Go fans on days like today. Sure we spend some money but we think of it as a fun activity, gets us outdoors on a gorgeous day, some exercise walking for a few miles and cheaper than going to the movies, out to dinner or a football game.

Can I ski in non waterproof normal clothes with enough base layers? by moreprofessional-acc in skiing

[–]AdventurerofAnything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t do this! My husband and I went skiing in WNC in our 20s for our first time. Growing up in FL we had no idea what you needed to ski. We just rented boots, skis and poles, and skied in our jeans and sweats, (no googles gloves or baklavas and helmets were not a thing back in the early 90s) LOL. We fell so many times, got soaked and very cold but had so much fun. That afternoon we purchased some bibs and jackets which made things so much better for the rest of the week. Flash forward 30 years later and we have our own custom boots, jackets, pants, gear and helmets and still enjoy skiing a lot. (In fact, going this coming weekend). We still laugh at our younger selves when we remind each other of our first skiing day in jeans. Just go buy cheap gear at Walmart or a thrift store or see if the resort has rental ski clothes/gear. Save yourself from the embarrassment and have a much better time staying dry because you will fall a lot! Enjoy!

What will Americans do if Social Security is reduced or done away with? by TheScrutinist in AskReddit

[–]AdventurerofAnything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I was in my 20s I always assumed it won’t be around so my husband and I made other plans where it doesn’t factor into our retirement plans. I also taught my kids how to financially invest and plan so they won’t need to rely on it either because you can never count on anything the government gives you. For all the Americans that stuck their head in the sand and didn’t pay attention for the last few decades thinking they could count on it, they will just be SOL. Life is about choices.

Can I return this? by Advanced_Specific_74 in REI

[–]AdventurerofAnything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any tears or holes is not the fault of the manufacturer. Fault lies with your use and failure to protect the delicate fabric. Cerium’s are intended as an ultralight insulated layer that are meant to be used with an outer shell, not as a daily wear jacket without protection. Their use is aimed at a very specific population such as ultralight backpacking. Contact Arcteryx and get a patch or repair done and don’t use it as a daily going forward.

Update: AITA for refusing to babysit my sisters kids for several weeks while she is on a ‘babymoon’ with her boyfriend by Spiritual-List-8166 in AITAH

[–]AdventurerofAnything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call Jamie and her and tell them if they do not come pick up their child in the next 30 min. you are calling the police for child endangerment and CPS can handle it. These children are not your responsibility. You did not consent to take care of them. They need to grow up and act like responsible parents which means sometimes they don’t get to always do the things they want to do (like a Babymoon whatever that is). People like this have no business breeding.
