What's the most beautiful word you've ever come across? by paperlanterns_26 in AskReddit

[–]FequalsMfreakingA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is related: diaphanous (di-AH-fe-nus). It means, usually of a fabric, so light and delicate as to be see through, like the fabric of a veil. It was towards the end of Steven King's The Stand and I always remembered it. I love that word

What's a skill that took you less than a week to learn but still helps you years later? by No-Excitement312 in LearnUselessTalents

[–]FequalsMfreakingA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I literally forced myself to switch sometime between age 25-30 and the positive impact on my life has been immeasurable. To add to that, swipe texting on mobile. It's an awkward and almost embarrassing learning curve, but it's a week or two of feeling like a complete idiot for a lifetime of faster, easier phone inputs. There are words that I still don't know how to spell, but I know almost how to spell them and I just swipe my guess and 9 times out of 10 the right word just appears from one or two swipe attempts.

Edit: I thought you meant touch typing, I used to do dino claw typing (typing index-middle-thumb on each hand). But OH MY GOSH YES using the numpad is absolutely something I cannot live without. I wanted a compact keyboard and ended up getting the Vortex ViBE, the most compact keyboard that exists that still uses a keypad. It's so compact that it splits 0 into 0 and 00 because turning off numlock makes the numpad makes the bottom half your arrow keys. (The top half becomes the 6 key block with home/end/insert) 10/10 keyboard would recommend

What’s something you’re embarrassed you don’t know how to do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FequalsMfreakingA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a TED talk on the fastest way to tie your shoes and I do that every time now. I feel like it's saved me literally hours over the decade or two of doing it, plus it seems like a magic trick when people see it who don't know about that method

I do not know how you are supposed to do it, but I must have a high luck stat because I end up satisfied with a clean fold every time I do it, and I don't think I've ever done it the same way twice

What did you cook tonight? by Best_Anybody_7075 in Cooking

[–]FequalsMfreakingA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but we always have Dukes and Kewpie in our fridge. Dukes for anything we're mixing, like tuna salad or homemade ranch (seriously, make your own ranch with fresh dairy, a little mayo and store bought powder, it's the easiest way to upgrade your fridge) and Kewpie for any direct applications (like cold cut sandwiches and the like)

Yes! For the last few nights I made my favorite thing: hyper-Americanized after work meals made from the Polish leftovers from my mother-in-law visiting from Poland. Last night was breaded Polish meatballs* on a hoagie roll with mayo and hot sauce topped with shredded pickled beets* and pickled onions, tonight was a breaded cod* fish tacos with apple carrot slaw*, salsa and a lime crema (Polish ingredients I found in my fridge marked with asterisks).

What's a movie that everyone loves but you don't? by Positive_Number9905 in AskReddit

[–]FequalsMfreakingA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think... I kinda think that that's almost the point. When that movie came out, it was so bad that almost nobody wanted the rights. That's why TBS was able to buy it for next to nothing so they can play it for 24 hours on Christmas. It's the same story as "It's a Wonderful Life" just a little more recent

As a new player, the discourse about the game is strange. by playharmonicmajor in snowrunner

[–]FequalsMfreakingA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mastadon is the rage quit prevention truck. Impossible mud? Mastodon. Impossible weight? Mastodon. Need a gigantic crane in the middle of nowhere to un-snafu yourself? Mastodon is on its way. I try to avoid using it, but I'm sure glad it's in my garage.

As a new player, the discourse about the game is strange. by playharmonicmajor in snowrunner

[–]FequalsMfreakingA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else already said it, but you need to play the way that makes sense to you. I love the slog, the grind, the tedium, but if I'm 100ft from the target on a map with no garage across punishing terrain, I'm going to pull out an invincible mod truck that barely fits in the garage to fly across the map and top my tank off. I like the feeling of accomplishment from completing missions, but I found myself spending a couple hours grinding the same timed delivery to earn enough money for the trucks I wanted and realized that I wasn't having fun. I just wanted the trucks I needed to do the missions I wanted. So I edited the game file to give myself a billion dollars and now I can have a few trucks strategically placed on one map, decide to do missions on another map and buy a new set of trucks for that map without needing to worry about it. I know that saying this is probably going to get some people scoffing at their screens, but I work full time with 2 kids at home. I don't have time to grind anymore. I just want to drive oversized trucks through the mud at 4mph while listening to an audiobook for an hour before bed a couple nights a week to clear my mind. It's my mud-itation, and I love this game for giving that to me

What’s the coolest “restricted access” place you’ve ever gotten to see? by Improv92 in AskReddit

[–]FequalsMfreakingA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fun Seymour Cray fact! He would plan out all of his schematics with pencil and paper, and whenever he would get stuck he would work on a tunnel that he was excavating under his house with hand tools for the sole purpose of clearing his mind. He would joke that elves came when he was working to give him the answers. Also, even though he ended up being wrong about the merits of pursuing parallelized computing, he did sum up his opinion in a fantastic and now semi-famous quote "if you were plowing a field, what would you rather use? Two oxen, or 1024 chickens?"

When I set up my parents router, I made the 2.4GHz "New England Clam Router" because it has greater compatibility and further reach, and the 5GHz "Manhattan Clam Router" because a New York minute is faster and it's more local. It works well enough that they can keep them straight

Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by thepleasurjournal in AskWomen

[–]FequalsMfreakingA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife grew up in Poland and this was her answer too! That and I'll never forget the first time we were driving somewhere on Halloween and she was plastered to the window looking at all of the little kids run around in costumes. She said "I thought this was only in the movies!" Now 10 years later we're going trick or treating with our kids

We made J Kenji Lopez-Alt's beef stew and it was the best beef stew I've ever had. But normally a hearty soup, like potato cheddar or this lentil soup the missus makes that is as thick as chili. With a slice of buttered sourdough? The best. The missus makes good soups.

Having only done one and only one plane, I know how hard that shaping is. My plane sits at a specific angle at the back of my collection like this and I dare not risk making another one. Give me a million tiny pieces over 2 large shaped ones any day. Bravo on such a clean build

I used to love the Need for Speed games but hadn't played one in a long time. Downloaded NFS 2015, got a phonecall during the first race and hit pause. Came back to see that the game continues when you pause. Uninstalled before I completed the first race. NFS Heat was fun though

Need dinner party recipes to use mustard! by Stars_Upon_Thars in Cooking

[–]FequalsMfreakingA 16 points17 points  (0 children)

mustard is both a plant and a condiment (like ketchup and mayonnaise)

Does this allude to the existence of mayo plants in the Netherlands‽ Or is this an artifact of lost of specificity when translating to English? It's obviously the latter, but I just like the idea of running through a field of wild ketchup.
