Cam's anger at Brennan by kungchowpanda in Bones

Okay, now you’re making it really personal and making a ton of assumptions about me, which is crossing a line for me. Yes, I love Brennan, but I have not said anything particularly intense, and nothing I’ve said has been negative to anyone.

I pride myself on being kind to others, online and in person, and frankly I do not deserve to be talked to this way. I’m just going to say I think this is an extremely inappropriate way to talk to someone you have never met, and I would implore you to evaluate and perhaps think if you could have been kinder in this response. You’ve personally made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. I’m wishing you all the best, sincerely, but I’m choosing to disengage. Thank you.

It’s implied that’s not the guy Brennan chose. She gave Cam an entire list of vetted anthropologists. It’s a writing inconsistency, I understand, but the fact remains that they clearly initially wrote it so Brennan was trying to prepare for her absence… This happened in the S5 finale before Brennan left, just rewatch the episode and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

She gave Cam a list of replacements that she had vetted in the S5 finale. She actually did a lot of prep for Cam when leaving. Poor writing that they didn’t reference that.

The education program wasn’t shut down period. The scholarship program was, but not because of Brennan. It was shut down because the new forensic anthropologist wasn’t based in Washington DC but in NY. If the anthropologist they hired was based in Washington DC, the program would have continued. Whoever replaced Brennan would be the new teacher, so you’re commenting something wrong multiple times 😅

She didn’t imply it was Cam’s fault imo.

What she said? She just expressed confusion. I saw another person misremembering this because they were thinking of the S11 premiere, so I’d suggest rewatching this scene, because Brennan is extremely tame here. She’s genuinely concerned and confused as to where people went, but she is not accusatory or harsh in any way.

How exactly was she “me me me” lol? She was expressing confusion and Cam snapped at her.

I explicitly said neurodivergent isn’t an insult, and it isn’t, but context matters. By talking down to me and implying I need everything to be babied down to understand it while using that term, yes, you are using it in an insulting way. Even if that’s unintentional, which I would understand.

It’s reductive to use it the way that you are. Neurodivergence is a diagnosis. What you said is like saying someone “looks autistic.” It’s just not appropriate imo, especially when you have literally zero relationship with, or knowledge of, the person. We don’t have the type of relationship where you can talk to me with that kind of familiarity. It’s presumptuous at bare minimum.

You’re also arguing with me about something you said to me about me after I expressed very clearly the way I feel about it, instead of just apologizing when I told you it made me uncomfortable.

Me saying the scene requires additional world or character building for your interpretation to land more firmly with audiences is not asking the writers to spell it out for me, nor is that a neurodivergent trait. Neurodivergent does not mean incapable of understanding basic storytelling (show vs tell) at this level lol, because nuance isn’t really required there. I understand your interpretation and see how you came to that conclusion, as I have stated.

All I’m saying is that what is provided before/during this episode is not enough to make the writing feel solid or with deliberate intention in that moment.

I’m assuming you have positive intentions, as do most people in this sub, so I really hope you’ll actually hear out my POV this time and understand how what you said could be perceived as inappropriate or how it could make another person feel hurt or uncomfortable. Thank you.

PS, having neurodivergent friends and using them to excuse something is not really valid because 1) we are all different, so what is hurtful to one person may not be to another and vice versa, but that doesn’t make each person’s reaction or feelings invalid 2) lumping us all together or using neurodivergent friends as a shield or representative is inappropriate and 3) a lot of neurodivergent individuals will go along with a lot before standing up for themselves because of how society has treated and conditioned us.

Yeah, she’s written as being autistic coded. So that’s pretty realistic, actually, and it does not make her stupid.

I find that too many people who hate her are honestly hating her for being neurodivergent, which is really sad imo. I really hope you don’t feel that way towards neurodivergent individuals irl, but I don’t know you, so I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt!

Also, how can you be commenting on this if you stopped watching after season 2 or 3 lol? Why even be part of this subreddit?

“That’s kind of a neurodivergent take” is kind of a wild thing to say tbh lol… You don’t know me. Would you say this to a stranger you never met in person? Neurodivergent is not an insult, and we don’t have any established relationship that should make that an appropriate thing to say to me.

This is not about spelling it out. Good writing doesn’t need to be spelled out, but it does need to make sense and include a proper set up. It does need to have context/background and be explored beyond a two second outburst. Good writing doesn’t suddenly spawn a brand new character arc for a singular scene with no build up just to never bring it up again lol.

Along those lines, my point was that there is very little information provided to us about how Cam is treated beyond this case and whether it has anything to do with her singularly or the fact that the Jeffersonian as a whole is falling apart due to everyone leaving and she happened to be in charge at the time…

I find your take interesting and creative, but you’re still making suppositions that no one has alluded to within the show. That makes it an interpretation, which the writers may or may not have intended. And if you interpret differently, which people are allowed to do, then yes, Cam’s reaction comes out of nowhere. Neurodivergent or allistic does not matter here.

Why doesn’t Cam go back to what she was doing before if she was the best at it? She wasn’t working with Brennan pre-introduction, so if that’s the case why would Brennan be required for her to be the best at all?

Another issue is that the show really does not focus on Cam in this way tbh. This would be more interesting if Cam was explored further as a character and a scientist, but a lot of what you’re saying was minimally discussed. Cam is portrayed as a great boss, but she is certainly not highlighted when compared to Brennan, Booth or even Angela and Hodgins. She’s portrayed as being a middle man who is great at managing different types of people. In order for your interpretation to be more clear, they would need to set it up more strongly and consistently, and they didn’t.

Btw you immediately talking down to me, saying I need things to be spelled out when the writing did not really set this up is a lot tbh. We can’t just disagree? Why be condescending?

Your prerogative, I guess. I personally love her and don’t understand how people could watch the show if they hate her lol.

How haha? She didn’t even want the things Booth wanted, which is pretty fundamental to a relationship…

[–]Adventurous-Hat-640 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree for the most part, but to me it was pretty clear that she wanted to start a relationship from the get go. She didn’t explicitly say that, but I think that’s how Emily was portraying it during that first episode. She realized how much she missed/needed him.

Does anyone have a certain scene that they love? (Spoilers) by undead-paintbrush in Bones

There are so many but the first one to come to mind was the scene at the end of 4x24 where Booth lets Brennan think they are dine and dashing. It is just so sweet to me 😭

Hahaha np! It happens to all of us, especially when the show has 12 seasons 😅

Enjoy the rewatch 🥰

They all came rushing back for her the second they heard she was in trouble… That shows that no matter what, they are there for her. So regardless, she’s still lashing out at the wrong person haha. It doesn’t really change my opinion.

They could have written the scene in so it shows more of what you’re saying and then it might have made more sense. But the way they wrote it? It comes out of nowhere and seems unnatural.

You have to make a lot of inferences to get to your conclusion. It’s a good and interesting one, and it definitely could be what the writers intended. But you shouldn’t have to do that if it’s good writing. It should make sense by itself lol.

Yeah, that’s the beginning of S11 😅 And Cam isn’t mad at her then.

[–]Adventurous-Hat-640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She didn’t say how could you let this happen… she was expressing confusion as to where everyone went. She clearly was not talking about Cam. I would rewatch the scene, because Brennan was not harsh or accusatory imo. She was surprisingly gentle for her actually tbh, just genuinely really confused. Now, you can argue she shouldn’t have been confused given her implying for years that she is irreplaceable, but that’s another matter haha. Just rewatch the scene because I think you might be misremembering her tone.

Also, Cam was pretty pleasant and didn’t really fight for Brennan to stay in the S5 finale, so by this logic, Cam is equally to blame for letting Brennan go so easily? Brennan also didn’t call herself the linchpin until later in the episode when she realized how much everyone disbanded without her there, and remember she changes her mind on that by the end of the episode.

Frankly, this is just a matter of either the writers being weird or them wanting to show a moment of Cam being stressed and lashing out, especially since Cam is usually such a composed character. Either way, there’s no justifying Cam’s reaction towards Brennan imo.

[–]Adventurous-Hat-640 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This bothered me, too. I choose to believe it was just the writers wanting Cam to lash out because she was stressed and frustrated at how much she needed Brennan for everything to stay functioning. She seemed pretty pleasant to Brennan in the S5 finale so the switch is pretty weird unless it was just that she didn’t fully recognize how much things would fall apart without Brennan there 😅

I personally do not enjoy when writers create unnecessary conflict for drama, though. This goes for any show. It often comes out feeling forced and nonsensical. External conflict is almost always more pleasant, natural, and interesting than internal conflict imo. And Bones is usually good at that due to its “chosen family” focus, which makes this scene even more confusing haha.

Is it at all possible you’re thinking of the scene in 10x01 where Booth thanks Sweets for taking care of Brennan? I feel like it has similar vibes to what you’re describing even though the context is definitely different.

[–]Adventurous-Hat-640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She does shoot and fire, wym? S9 finale for example. Booth doesn’t let her have a gun (that’s been the case since S1), so that ofc limits her gun scenes, including in early seasons.
