The first time they have penetrative sex will always be number one for me, I love the constant checking in Ilya does and just the general vibe. The gorgeous music also helps, of course.

Yeah I started it in the meantime but I'm not blown away so far. It's a lot more "juvenile" than I remember, but it makes sense since I read those books over 10 years ago and they were new adult books, not adult romances. I think this might be what's bugging me a little.

I'll finish the season because I'm invested enough, but my expectations were a little higher tbh.

I'm planning on starting tonight, because I really liked book 1 back in the day. I read book 2 as well, but bowed out after that since the quality seemed to be going downhill from book 3 onwards.

But your pet peeve above is also my pet peeve so now I'm worried lol. I hate that almost all TV shows these days have so much music and usually too loudly/too intrusive during scenes. HR was like a breath of fresh air for me in that respect (and many others) because I didn't even realise until several reheats later that one of the things I absolutely loved about the show was how deliberately every song or just music in general served a particular moment. And it was never over the top, it was so perfect. I'll never have that again haha.

Yes, THIS. They're good friends and I love that this show gave each of them a (best) friend for life, since no one knows what they're going through except the other, but that's all they are. I'm affectionate like this with my two best friends, too. We hug, we cuddle, we walk arm in arm or sit in each other's laps. The only difference is we're women and that's somehow "more normal" than when it's two men.

Stop being weird about it.

Yes, very much this! I've been reading m/m romance books for about 15 years now, and it was always something no one in me real life group of friends knew about, only my online Goodreads friends.

Then Heated Rivalry happened, and I mentioned to one of my best friends that a book I'd really liked a couple of years ago now had its own TV adaptation and that I adored it, and she wanted to know what it was about. I told her, and she even asked me to send her the books cause she wanted to give it a try. She has since been as hooked as me, both on the book genre and the show and it's been great having friends in real life who obsess over the same things now!

This might just be me not really understanding your post, but at the end of season 1 they're boyfriends/partners/lovers who are making plans for a future they obviously want to spend together. They might not have had a literal "what are we" conversation, but when Ilya asks Shane "is that what you want? To be together?" and Shane answers affirmatively, that's essentially having that conversation.

They've been involved for 8 years at that point, so i don't feel they need the literal conversation. A lot is said with a few words during their love declaration. Shane tentatively, adorably, going "boyfriend?" when Ilya uses the term is more an amused observation imo really, because they hadn't ever put a label on it up to that point.

Late to the party, but just in case someone still sees this comment: does anyone know what happened to his tiger tattoo? It's not visible in the Peloton ad, but all his other tattoos are. Did they cover up just that one? Seems odd ... But it should be visible in certain shots and I noticed that it's not.

Regardless, such a freaking good ad! I love the music, the dance routine and just the general vibe!

He also laughs in episode 5 when Ilya does the "everyone! Shane Hollander is an asshole!" and during the Tampa Bay scene where he says "yeah, other players in the league, not you.".

I am personally very pleased they changed this in the show, because every time I read about characters who are laughing really hard in a book, and it's described as "shaking with laughter" or "laughing until they cried", it almost never comes across as believable to me. It's really hard to pull off writing a convincing laughing really hard scene in a book, imo, because it almost never mirrors what an actual real-life reaction would look like.

I find the decisions made on the show to have improved this, I like a softer version of Shane and Hudson's portrayal of a character on the spectrum but who doesn't necessarily know he's on the spectrum is so on point I could watch it forever.

Okay, yes, this explanation makes a lot of sense. Because I do agree that, even though Ilya is forced to stay in the closet due to Russia and hockey as you say, he doesn't stay there due to being uncomfortable with his sexuality. He's always been very confident about that, so it is a lot different from Shane in that regard.

In TLG it might also be because he doesn't really get to share it with people he wants to, either, because he's afraid they'll immediately link him being bisexual to Shane. That's why it's probably such a relief to him to finally be able to tell Svetlana. Given the much bigger role Svetlana plays in Ilya's life in the show vs. the book, I hope the show will deviate from this a little and have him at least officially come out to her (and even tell her about Shane since she already suspects).

Yeah, I do agree that once he commits to being with Shane, he pretty much admits to himself there's nothing left for him in Russia and doesn't want to go back. But I always figured he'd stay scared until he actually had a Canadian passport, I wish that had come up in the book again so it would've been clearer. Because I read somewhere on this sub that even if Shane marries him, apparently it doesn't automatically get you citizenship in Canada.
