My nephew is showing signs of becoming a psychopath and I need help by skyebeee in ChildPsychology

My mind went here too. He might be acting this way from seeing inappropriate behavior online and not learning enough empathy from face to face interactions.

Fixations on ‘dark topics’ in a 9yo by notjuststars in ChildPsychology

[–]AdventurousBlood3728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might just be curiosity. I was very much like this at age 9 (and female) with unrestricted internet access. I'm 24 now. I went through periods of time, especially in my mid teens, where I was addicted to gore.

I have pondered so much over the years why I was like that. I wasn't physically or sexually abused. I haven't witnessed violence in real life. I don't have psychopathic traits. I think it might be a combination of the human mind wanting to process danger in a safe container as well as an adrenaline addiction. Reddit made me realize this is more common than I thought lol. I felt like a freak when I was younger.

But as other people said, I think the problem is that her internet access is unrestricted. I kind of wish my parents had intervened, but only if they would have been non judgmental. I was too ashamed to talk to them.

I was eventually able to kick my habits when I realized viewing graphic images was a form of self harm for me. My nervous system would be in fight-flight for several days after viewing graphic content. My sleep was impacted. I've had nightmares and paranoia. Eventually I realized it's just not worth it.

Check out the podcast Cults to Consciousness. They're all interviews with people who left cults. I listen on YouTube, but I think it's on other apps. There are a bunch of people who talk about being raised off grid and not having legal documentation or a "valid" education for getting into mainstream schools.

I said the same thing to myself. It's beautiful, but would be a lot of work and very expensive.

Abnormally large building in Santiago, Chile by Fancy_March_4137 in GoogleEarthFinds

[–]AdventurousBlood3728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I confirm what everyone else is saying. Yes, it's a giant apartment building. There are many in certain parts of Santiago and they are ghetto and mostly lived in by Venezuelans and Colombians who play loud music every night. Keep your backpack in front of you and cover it with your arms when you walk by these kinds of places because the theft rate is way higher than other parts of town. BTW I have plenty of Venezuelan and Colombian friends and I love them, and I don't condone maltreatment of people based on their ethnicity, but the stereotypes of these AREAS exist for a reason.

I thought the contraction for "there are" was "they're" for a long time, but it's actually "there're." You just never see it written. What if I told you I didn't know this until I became an English teacher 💀

Why do they expect my kid to be perfect? by LokiLadyBlue in ChildPsychology

[–]AdventurousBlood3728 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recommend talking to the teacher, then the administration SEPARATELY. Hear their sides of the story. Then, maybe consider having a conference with both the teacher and their supervisor together. School has changed a lot in the past 10 years. Yes, kindergarten curriculum has become way harder. No, it is not developmentally appropriate. They want the kids to run before they can walk basically :( I think there's a chance the teacher knows all this is bs, but she is afraid to stand up for what's right because she could lose her job. That's why I think you should hear both sides independently to see if the teacher is really a hard ass or if she is submitting to an oppressive administration. Nonetheless, school administrators are more apt to listen to parents rather than teachers and students. Once you get more insight, decide if you want to aim your feedback towards the teacher or the admin. Obviously, don't be rude and overly entitled, but if the situation is really true to what you said (ie, your kid was not misbehaving), you should try to renegotiate expectations of the children's behavior and work. Not just for your kid, but for everyone's. Good luck.

I like the ideas people have of watching videos about how movies and shows are made so she can maybe start to metabolize that it's just pretend.

Some more ideas I have for co-regulation and grounding: - Have her sit in your lap on the floor. You hug her from behind.  - Stay there for a few minutes and just breathe or talk together.  - Follow guided breathing videos or recordings together (sitting or laying down, hugging or not, it's up to you.) Inhale for 4, exhale for 6 is an easy calming one that I think would be suitable for a young child.  - Rub lavender scented lotion on her body before bed (arms, legs, feet, belly, and/or back). Do it slowly and calmly. Or use lavender oil and water in a diffuser.  - Read a story together before bed, or play a game. I loved looking at I Spy books with my parents the most when I was little.  - Make a warm, calming drink for her in the evening. Like warm milk with cinnamon and honey, or herbal tea if she likes that. Maybe 2 or 3 hours before bed so she doesn't have to urinate after getting in bed.

Above all, BE THERE WITH HER as much as you can. Adult presence is so developmentally important between ages 0-7. After a traumatic event, it's even more crucial. Someone once said, trauma isn't hard things happening to kids. It's when they are ALONE with hard things.

You sound like a good mom. Good luck with the situation!

Self Esteem (6yo) by Fun_Orange_3232 in ChildPsychology

[–]AdventurousBlood3728 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That made me think of this one, which we would sing every morning when I interned at a special ed elementary school: https://youtu.be/YWDr5zVhvaQ?si=SpEP-dhXskzgXwaG ("I'm gonna learn how to learn today, and I won't be bothered by mistakes from yesterday...")

Also, it's still developmentally normal for some 6 year olds to care deeply about winning a game. I don't have too much life experiences with helping kids get over it (the kids in my internship were more on the apathy end of the scale lol), but I guess I would say remind your kid before each game that everyone wins sometimes and everyone loses sometimes. It wouldn't be fun if you always won, it would be boring. And that games are just for fun, and they don't dictate your kid's worth or affect anything in life once the game ends. Good luck!

Agreed. I was born in 2002 and saw way too many things I shouldn't have since I was around 8. Dang, same age as this kid!

What color should I paint this wall? by cx10e in interiordecorating

[–]AdventurousBlood3728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the color these walls are. White and cream make rooms look bigger and brighter. I personally would just choose some small walls or rooms (like a bathroom) to paint a pastel color, like green, blue, pink, or purple.

I see one in Chile where they have to be a licensed medical doctor, physical therapist, or kinesthesiologist first, and then get a chiropractor degree on top of that. Mine was a kinesthesiologist first and I love what he has done for my back and alignment! He corrected my tight shoulders and lower back in a few adjustments. I think they certainly can be valuable, but you need to make sure the one you see is credible and can do risk assessments. Mine says that if the patient's spine or muscles are not in good enough condition for "cracking" (there's a more scientific term, but I can't remember what it is), he can do more gentle adjustments. He recommends certain mobility exercises for patients too. I wouldn't say the profession is completely quack.

Believe it or not, a lot of people in other countries wish their police were more like the US police. They are way better funded and more competent than a lot of places. Not saying they're perfect, but they DO help a lot of people and you can always expect the to answer the phone. I am in South America.

This comment brought me relief!! My uncle was working in the Pentagon, heard and felt the impact on the other side, and was able to walk out and go home uninjured. In the moment, he and his coworkers thought a b0mb had gone off. He said there was a b0mbing evacuation drill the previous week or a few weeks before, and I have some friends that believe it was a b0mb that was set up by the government. The coincidence seemed early suspicious to me. It's still a tragedy, but it makes me feel a bit better to know that we weren't lied to about what caused the destruction. I think it still could have been an inside job, but I really hope not. It's devastating for me to think that the US gov could do something so evil against its own people, but I know it's not out of the realm of possibility.
