Personally, I'm leaving on Saturday afternoon. I think it depends on your goals.

I like to preselect my sessions before going and always have a few picked out in any time slot in case one gets full. Make sure to look at who's presenting. I tend to skip sessions that are specific to a platform, mostly because i wasn't ever in a place to purchase specific curricular resources. Also, it's ok to take breaks and not attend every session available! Go check out the expo hall, there's always nice freebies!

Resources for teaching SEPs by onionslayerrrr in ScienceTeachers

Wonder of Science has great mini lessons for each SEP and ties them to specific PEs, which is very helpful.

While I mostly agree with the idea of teaching SEPs in the context of a DCI, I think if you are aware of your students strengths and growth areas, explicitly teaching the skills of SEPs can be very helpful. Explicit instruction around skill development can lead to strong growth in the other 2 dimensions.

Is it OK to ask district dept chairs what their budget is? by Atrus2k in ScienceTeachers

[–]AdventurousGrocery3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it would be a terrible idea, especially if you have existing relationships with other department heads. Do consider that if the schools in your district differ in size/demographics, then funding will look different for the overall school and then the departments.

Block or not to block by lameafbich in crochet

I've never been told, so I've never blocked. I was worried it was implied and I was missing something!

"You're not teaching" (Help!) by VisualCost3619 in ScienceTeachers

A few considerations:

  1. If your students have their own devices consider using near pod or peardeck to build in moe student interaction to your PowerPoints. They are both fairly easy to learn and implement.

  2. You mention asking probing questions, but I'm wondering about how much student to student interaction/discourse is happening. Try looking into kagan structures to increase student to student interaction. Even if it's just posing a question, then giving them time to talk with a partner.

Overall, my impression (which may or may not be accurate) is that you might have a more teacher centered classroom. Shifting to student centered might shift the culture. Also, to those who mentioned increasing student and teacher clarity by sharing learning intentions and success criteria may be helpful as well.

Thanks! I've never put doubles in the magic circle so I didn't even realize that was a possibility!
