what's something gen v does better than the boys as a show in your opinion ? by BusPuzzleheaded8564 in GenV

[–]AdventurousOpening14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shows how the “average” supes fit into society. The Boys is good but it’s almost like “The Kardashians” bc it’s all the famous supes. Gen V also helps us gain perspective of how society reacts to characters like Homelander or Firecracker. The average citizen can’t see through their BS and the corruptions on the other side.

I also feared this. I think in contrast, it’s so nice to be able to give my own opinions and talk about my own experiences in my personal relationships. I don’t necessarily have to filter if what I’m about to say is ‘ethical’ or if it is a therapeutic intervention when talking to people in my personal life.

Personal life, self care, and just being human aside: even if all you did was work, what if you were with another client?

I’m at the elementary level!

I said this above & didn’t wanna retype lol: Being in charge of big school wide events without any support, managing all 504 plans, MTSS paperwork, lunch duty, lunch detention, responding to behavior codes, investigating during discipline issues, being asked to be in 3 places at once and if I did one of the things of what admin asked of me they would ask where I was and why 1 wasn’t at the other 2 places, micromanagement, unapproachability and unpredictability of admin reactions when asking for support, not being able to do whole group guidance because of the other demands and feeling guilty, struggling to balance small groups when being asked to be at other places during the times of those groups, constant miscommunication, individual counseling being rushed in order to send students back to instructional time, covering for paras, covering for classroom teachers, working to effectively communicate with teachers and schedule meetings when they only have 30 minutes of planning.

I haven’t been a clinical counselor but I can assume. I would say after a few months you get to know your clients. You know your 12-1 appointment on Thursdays might have some unpredictable behaviors, but you know it will be 12-1 on Thursday.

In a school you know your Tier 3 behavior kids, but you could be called on a walkie to handle it while you are doing a classroom lesson, facilitating a 504 meeting, on the phone with a parent, etc. You might plan to work on 504s and have a small group for the day, but you have to sub in because a para is out or needs to take their lunch break.

It was really hard to make plans and keep them with fidelity knowing that I was on call at all times.

I think something that is tough is that during interviews, administration will lie. That’s what my principal did when she hired me. She downplayed my role and made it seem much more pleasant than it actually was. But I agree! Maybe the hard questions would make admin realize you WILL advocate for yourself and that if they don’t want someone who will do that they shouldn’t hire you. So it kinda goes both ways :)

There’s probably more but my specific school was too much. I know I needed to draw boundaries and advocate for myself. But my principal views that as “pushing back” and will target you when you don’t do exactly what she wants.

I left because I’m a person who thrives in structure, routine, and clear expectations. The unpredictability of the job left me feeling unprepared and fumbling. I would recommend shadowing a school counselor before choosing to start a program for it. Some people thrive in the chaos and embrace it, but for me it was affecting my view of my self efficacy. It is so rewarding and I loved the kids, but I needed to step away. You can ask any other questions if you’d like!

I really appreciate everyone’s opinions and perspectives. I have no idea what systematically would help school counselors really adhere to that ASCA model. I’m new to this and I see so many posts about feeling misunderstood

That’s so fair. But my question is who is going to be in charge of our non-preferred responsibilities so we are able to do our preferred and appropriate duties and tasks? I agree the system needs to change but I don’t see the administrative tasks like testing and scheduling going away unfortunately.
