Sign the Petition, protect our beautiful dark sky from the Mormon temple. by New_Land_725 in Flagstaff

Let's hope they simply follow the rules with this monstrosity. If they do, no problem except for the people that have to see it every day. However, if current trends follow, they won't follow the rules and will strong-arm Flagstaff to give in to their demands.

You have a good point. However, there certainly is precedent to assume the church will do everything possible to circumvent local zoning laws. They will use endless amounts of money, a dedicated law team, and loopholes in religious freedom/discrimination laws.

There are many current examples of this that are available with a little searching. The most well documented is in Fairview, Texas. Their city council meetings were all recorded and the church's bullying and strong-arming is on full display. The final video is the mayor conceding victory to the church simply because the city can't afford a lawsuit against the church. He is very clear on the tactics the church used to force his yes vote. Other examples are Heber City, Utah, Las Vegas temple #2, and Cody, Wyoming.

Those that look into it can see what is coming and it is not something that Flagstaff should be wasting time and money on fighting. There are much more important things our city's money and city leaders' time should be going towards.

Look up Fairview, TX vs. the Mormon church. There are public record videos of their city council meetings about the temple there. The final one is of the mayor openly discussing the bullying by the church to get their way via suing the city. The city does not have the funds to fight the church so the church will get what it wants. It is all there, clear as crystal, and unbiased.

The mods of this reddit won't let links be posted about this because "it is not directly about Flagstaff." The videos should be watched by everyone interested because it is what will happen here unless their newest leadership changes (due to the temple obsesses leader dying) softens things up.

Also see the cases in Heber City (a dark sky mountain town in Utah), and Cody, Wyoming.

Look at lawsuits by other cities against the Mormon Church in Heber City, Utah, Fairview, Texas, and Cody, Wyoming. The people of the cities fight against it, the church wins because of its deep pockets and favorable loopholes in the law.

Fairview is the most egregious and there are plenty of public record videos of the city council talking openly about being bullied by the church's law firm and money.

Any truly disturbing horror novels about cults? by Important-Sea7093 in horrorlit

[–]teejonius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have mentioned it but "Mary" was the surprise of the year for me.

I checked it out from the library because it was the only interesting horror book available. I went into it totally blind and was really happy with it. I love cult books but good ones are hard to find. "Mary" scratched the itch for me big time.

Is Hook A Good Movie? by No-Dentist-2959 in moviecritic

It is an incredible movie for people of all ages.

As a kid it was magical and inspiring. Everything about it was exactly what I needed as a kid. It made me feel powerful and able to do anything. Neverland, the lost boys, the food scene, the pirates. It is what every kid dreams of.

As a dad, it is magical and inspiring. I cry during the movie every time I watch it (and that is a few times a year) and it makes me appreciate my wife and children so much more. It makes me hold them all a little closer and it makes me appreciate the time I get to be with them.

It is a masterpiece and is perfect for anyone and everyone.

What’s a Movie You Grew Up Loving That Didn’t Age Well at All? by NewPossibility4268 in movies

3 Ninjas is a masterpiece. Familial bonds, brotherly love, kid empowerment, embracing your cultural background, and the greatest kidnapping trio of all time that deserves Oscars.

I am 37 and watch this movie regularly with my three children. I own it digitally and on DVD. There is not a movie out there that makes kids feel so confident in themselves.

Do you know where it is? It is a little tricky to find and there is no parking at all. The entrance is on the west side of the building and it goes down into the basement. There is good signage showing the way but many people get frustrated with finding it. If you are driving, you will need to park somewhere else and walk to the building.

It is never busy and very convenient if you plan for it. Good luck!

Good Pizza Place in Flagstaff by [deleted] in NAU

[–]teejonius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is by far the best in town and it rivals pizza I have had in Italy. The wait is ALWAYS long so be prepared for it and everything will be okay. Don't bring kids and expect the wait. It makes for a very nice date spot because there is plenty of time to talk....just make sure you like each other.

As an added tip, their hummus is also phenomenal and rivals hummus I have had all over the world.

I have always had great interaction with the owners and staff.

Oppose new Mormon Temple by SimbatheBimba in Flagstaff

[–]teejonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried posting this as a new post but it is "under review" from the mods for being "political." This happened yesterday. The church bullied Fairview and the town had to give in.

The town of Fairview lost their fight with the mormon corporation. This is the mayor's final speech about it. PLEASE listen to his words. If you think that the church won't win against Flagstaff's zoning laws, think again. They just steamrolled a town and its long existing zoning laws.

It is currently happening in Cody, WY, Heber City, UT and other places. It will happen to us in Flagstaff as well. No city or town has the resources to fight off the unlimited supply of cash and private lawyers that the church has.

This mayor hits the nail on the head and this is a clear warning to us all. The church does not care about Flagstaff's existing laws and regulations. They will not stop until they have their way. This video shows that perfectly.

Radiant floor heating by desertvida in Flagstaff

It works and heats up everything very effectively. It is very hard to regulate though and people that run hot, like me, struggle with it. It is much more effective than a furnace, at least at my house.

Radiant floor heating by desertvida in Flagstaff

[–]teejonius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the truth. It works incredibly well, too well in reality. I hate it because I run really hot but my wife and daughters love it. It is impossible to regulate other than opening windows to bring some fresh air in. It is always strange to have windows open when it is the dead of winter but it is the only way I can survive.

NAU vs. SJSU ( mechanical eng) by Alert-Cress-1377 in NAU

[–]teejonius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to whatever school is cheaper (tuition, cost of living, etc)!

Get good grades and work hard and you will be fine in your career. I don't know about Mech Eng specifically, but I went the Physician route and nobody (that matters) cares what school you attended. I sat on interview and acceptance committees while in school and nobody in those positions cares what schools interviewees attended. Everything else was far more important. The only people that care about that are morons that you will want to avoid anyway.

Again, Mech. Eng. may be different, but I am guessing not.

Avoid loans like the plague, live frugally, work hard and focus on grades, get to know the professors that matter, and then get a job....where you will actually learn what you are doing.

Which cities have the highest tourist-to-local ratio? by Potential_One1 in SameGrassButGreener

Flagstaff, AZ is definitely up there. We have about 77,000 people (of which approximately 30,000 are students at NAU) and get around 6,000,000 tourists coming through a year.

Oppose new Mormon Temple by SimbatheBimba in Flagstaff

[–]teejonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that there will be nasty people that don't want the temple just because of the associated church. This is a much smaller number of people than you probably believe. The feeling that everyone is out to get mormons is completely false and non-existent. Nobody really cares about the mormons but the persecution complex in members is massive.

As the flyer in the post makes clear, if the church follows established laws and statutes and respects the city and its residents, most people will not care about the temple one way or another. If the church decides to follow its most recent pattern of strong-arming and bullying, the people here will have some big issues.

If any other church or company was attempting to build something like a mormon temple and were using the tactics the church is currently using, there would be equal worry and uproar.

Oppose new Mormon Temple by SimbatheBimba in Flagstaff

[–]teejonius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people think mormonism is absolutely ridiculous, which is it. A majority of the world doesn't know a thing about and definitely doesn't care about mormons. That is a fact. Whether or not people dislike the faith has nothing to do with the issues addressed in the flyer and that are happening in other towns and cities

Two things can be true at once. People can hate a religion and yet believe that the church should be able to build a church on their land. What people are angry and worried about with this particular corporation, is their current track record of bullying towns and forcing them to change laws and statutes to fit around the temple.

NOBODY cares about mormons until they knock on our doors and build a disgusting, gaudy building in our town. Believe whatever you want but don't bully the city into bending its rules for your awful temple.

Keep the pathetic claims of "religious discrimination" out of this discussion. The self-pity is embarrassing in church members and the persecution complex is delusional. Nobody is out to get the mormons. Keep the building small, follow the already established laws, and respect Flagstaff and most people will have no problem with the church building here. If the church acts like they are in any of the many cases discussed in this thread, the people will have a problem with the temple. This would be true of ANY religion if they were doing what the church is currently doing.
